View Full Version : Project "Misfit" 84 FJ60

So as some of you know, i recently purchased a 1984 FJ60, as a temporary vehicle while i repair the ranger. I then plan on giving it to the Katey to replace her minivan. I hate to say it, but the more i drive it the more i like it. And after taking it out on Geneva Creek, its gotten me totally bit. However, i am a very lucky man because Katey is more than happy to share it with me after it is fully hers.Katey decided to name her FJ Misfit, because it is the first and only non ford product either one of us has ever owned, seeing as the name seems to fit it, i think its going to stick. Our plans now include a 4in OME Lift and 35x12.50r15's down the road. We are not going to jump straight into it however, and are going to go slow and do things right. So far we have changed the plugs, wires, dist cap, rotor, fuel filter, brakes(rotors, pads, drums and shoes), rear diff fluid, and the clutch for the clutch fan. We've cleaned out and spent 6 hours fully detailing the interior to get things spruced back up. We've also added a new Sony CD player(which by the way folks is my first stereo with more than AM and a tape deck!) and have purchased a CB. We also have a new after-market Tuffy Security Console ordered to replace the almost non existent console in it now. Misfits best upgrade so far has been the Addition of a front range 4x4 sticker!!! Our next upgrades after this will be to the exhaust, Shortly after that we will be doing a knuckle rebuild, as well as adding longfields, and i am currently shopping around for some 4.56 gears to re-gear the front and rear as well as install a locker in the rear. Sometime after this we will start looking into getting the lift. Thats probably the furthest out mod of them all.In any free time i still have left over from working on the ranger/F150 i will start planning out some sliders and a new rear bumper. Eventually getting to a front winch bumper but still have not decided which direction we would like to go. If anyone has any suggestions for anything they are greatly appreciated. With that said here are a few pictures of where Misfit currently stands.

Heck, Chris, the sticker alone will get you through most trail in Colorado. :thunb:
I didn't see sliders anywhere in there (until I was prompted to reread it). I think sliders should be an early addition, especially if you're not going to lift it for a while.

Actually Rob's drool bucket gets in the way of the page when he has to look down....He said he had been meaning to get a monitor stand to solve that problem
Looks like you have done your research, Chris. You aren't going to go wrong with what you are planning. Might wait on the Longfield's though. For the $600 you spend for them and the stock size of the FJ60 axles, these would go on the back burner for me for a long time. I think that if you started asking the guys with 60s here and on IH8, you would find that the majority of them are still running stock axles F/R with no issues.

I actually did something productive with my free time this weekend. I have gotten the coax cable as well as the power cables ran for the CB. I used the power source for my stereo as the power source for my CB. I'm hoping that wont cause me any problems, if it does i'll find another way of wiring it up for power. I'm mounting the Antenna for the CB near the hood. I am replacing the stock console in the FJ with a Stereo Tuffy console, so i ran the wires underneath the carpet to try and keep everything looking clean and not so choppy. Heres some pics from today, but i will try and get some better ones tomorrow.

The wires ran to where the new console will be. I left them long for now as that whole idea better to have more than you need than not enough.

Sliders are actually in this weeks today list, i doubt it'll happen but it would be nice to have them before the clean up run. I'm still trying to figure out how i want to tie them into the frame, and when i'll have access to a pipe bender. I thought about just cutting the pipe angled and welding it up, but that means more welding, and i think i might be sacrificing some strength in that method. As well as it might not be cosmetically pleasing.

Looking good, Chris. Sliders aren't a major need for Devil's Canyon and not likely needed even for Barbour Fork. If I'm remembering correctly, about the only place they'd come in handy is the fun hill on BF (where Chris and Porkchop did major wheel stands last year. There's a rock on the left at that hole coming down that could scrape the side of a rig if you get too close to it. But you can go around the hole and the rock and there's an easier climb right next to it.

Did some test fitting yesterday on the antenna, and made a bracket while i was at work today. came home the bracket matched layout perfect but for some reason looked like ****. So i am off to the store to get some material because naturally i got laid off today, and am no longer in a fab shop =(. I have it all set in place now, with some trusty 11R's, so hopefully it stays put while i am at the store picking some stuff up. Oh i also installed my new digital antenna for my stereo today. Id post a pic of it,but i just released i haven't taken one yet. But heres some of the CB Antenna in its new home.

thats what i am afraid of, i am hoping the spring will help some, but idk. This is my first attempt at ever setting up a CB in any rig. I'm afraid its a little to tall, but i just followed the general guild lines i read on them on the internet. So hopefully it'll last a while. I had to fabricate a mount for the mount, which kind sucked, and now i have to go to "school"(my apprenticeship school) to use the tig welder because i need to gusset my homemade mount. This kinda is turning into a way bigger project than expected.

my radio antenae is in that same spot, but has a good spring on it. I hit it probably 10 times every run, but the spring saves it. I had a CB antenae mounted on the other side for a while, but it broke off. I didnt put it back because I found that it annoyed me when wheeling in the snow. I like to wheel with my window down, and it would knock all the snow off the trees right onto my head.

So here is my stereo antenna, way less of a pain in the ass than my CB antenna. Oh and i went the easy way and drilled and tapped things instead of TIG welding a custom mount. Forgot the antenna was there and pulled into a drive through and bent the mount. So the antenna is leaned back really far now but still works great. I'll be TIG welding a new bracket when i go to school in a month.

Well about all i got accomplished today was the assembly and test fit, so i could see what i need to do mount it in place. The test fit looks good, and it seems like my worry about not matching the interior was for nothing. Its looking pretty good. I'm just bitting the bullet and going to school tomorrow, and going to fab up the mounting plate, and new bracket for the CB Antenna there. Also i have to grind out a little bit in the stereo slot to get my CB to fit in it properly,(1/32 shy on width and 1/16th on height) Heres some pictures of the test fit. And the best thing is....BIG GULP clearance in the front :D

The actually sell one designed like that for the 40. And they claim that if you have the lids shut that its water tight. It was kinda pricey for my tastes, but i feel a lot better about leaving things in my console now.

It had it going under the frame in one section, but thats all been ripped off now :D So i am gonna try and run it up closer to the flow and keep it tucked above the frame. I'm probably gonna use a low profile muffler and call it good for now. If i see you soon, it'd be awesome if i could take a look.

Thanks for the heads-up, OC, but I can spend money only on safety-related mods right now (eg, steering components) and not on luxuries.
That said, my wife actually encouraged me to buy a '78 40 a guy in Loveland was selling for $2,450. Unfortunately, it had been sold. I think aliens have taken over her brain, but in a good way. :)

Shortly we will be taking the FJ out of commission for a while. It needs some good ol tlc and preventive body surgery to stop some cancer. I am still drawing the plans up on this, but i can say either a ford 300
(I6) or a Chevy 383 is likely to be in the future for this rig. Thats a ways away however, so i will be doing a rebuild on the 2F. More info on plans to come tomorrow.

Thats one of my worries, but im not shooting for high power numbers in my opinion. Id be content if my HP and torque were both around 300. The good thing is theres so many part markers for the 350 that you can build them to just about any numbers you want. The reason i am considering the ford 300 is because when you build them you can get mid 300 ftlbs and keep the horsepower right around 220, giving me plenty to play with, yet not enough to over do it. I am thinking real heavily on this all still, and trying to find the best route. The best thing about the 300 though is they last FOREVER and get 20MPG
Chris
September 16th, 2010, 04:45 PM
Good points Chris, the 350 is really easy to find and mates so easily to the 60 is why it's so popular. I'll be watching to see what you decide!

Good points Chris, the 350 is really easy to find and mates so easily to the 60 is why it's so popular. I'll be watching to see what you decide!
Right now the biggest PRO for the 350 is how easy it mates to the 4spd. The 300 conversion is a little more intense, and no one actually sells the parts for it. Marks makes a kit for a ford 302/351w which in theory would work with the 300 as its the same bolt pattern and crank output. However it uses a fly wheel housing which adds 4" in-between the motor and transmission and might causes clearance issues on the front side of the 300 I6. So i am leaning towards the 350, and its second pro is that its a significantly cheaper conversion than the one for a ford. The 300 would be nice though because i already have one sitting in the garage. So much to consider
Fordguy77
October 18th, 2010, 06:25 PM
So after more research, and some thinking i have decided to go with either a Ford 302 or a Ford 351Windsor. The cost of the conversion kit for them is the same as a the chevy 350. I am more familiar with the ford motors, and can find a early 80s bronco with either motor for fairly cheap so i could get the entire setup, instead of having to piece it together. They are also both lighter than a Ford 300 I6, and offer more room inside the engine compartment. This mod looks to be scheduled for some time around march or April.

October 18th, 2010, 06:27 PM
The next mod/repair on the FJ60 is going to be rebuilding the front axle. The drivers side knuckle is starting to leak a little grease and it seems like the axle seal might be going out as well. Right now i am just keeping an eye on it, making sure the grease and diff fluid levels stay good. Once i get the ranger back up and running, i am just going to pull the front axle out from underneath the FJ and rebuild it. It seems like it would be easier that way, than doing it in place.

Hey Chris-Just some thoughts coming from someone who has rebuilt a mess of Yota axles:
Get a axle rebuild kit from Marlin, All Pro, TG, DavezOffRoad, etc. All these kits have all the goodies and cost considerably less than the parts cost at Yota. Toyota doesn't even have a "kit" per se, and you have to buy individual parts, costing over $200.
Get the Marlin Crawler upgraded axle seals. These are way better than the stock seals, will take more off road abuse, and are pretty inexpensive.
Get the Bobby Longfield lifetime wiper seals. These replace the stock felt seals that are so much a PITA.
Save yourself a little grief and replace the inner knuckle bolts with studs. These are the bolts that hold everything together on the inner(round)part of the knuckle. Replacing them with studs allows you to slid all the gasket pieces and parts over the studs, lining them up. The studs can be purchased cheaply at AA Hardware, pretty much any ACE, or AAA Metric. This is the part on Yota axle rebuilds that everyone feels like 3 hands aren't quite enough. With the studs, everything lines up.
Get the heavy duty replacement rock rings from TG.
Get the cheapo 3/8" hub wrench from TG (I think) it is only about $10 or so and allows you to use a 3/8" socket on the hub. Since you are only dealing with 43 pound torque, you don't need anything that takes a 1/2".
If you want to do the hub stud/bolt upgrade, go to McGuckins Hardware in Boulder or AAA Metric and get the 12.8 hardness upgrade bolts/studs for less than a buck apiece. I found an allen head 12.8 bolt at McGuckins for $.63 that works fine and is considerably stronger than the stock hub bolts. It is also quite a bit cheaper than the $80 ARP upgrade that is offered by many companies. Running slightly oversize tires, this is probably overkill, but for $16-20 is worth the piece of mind. With the tires on my rig and being locked, I blew off three hubs, shearing everything, before I did this and have had no trouble since.
Soak the hub nuts down with PB, too, as the cone washers here (as well as the cone washers in the steering arm nuts) are a royal PITA to get loose and out.
Liberally coat all the cone washers with anti-seize when you put it all back together.
Soak the steering arm knuckle bolts down with PB Blaster, starting a week before you start the taking it apart. Hose down the whole area. These are the biggest PITA to deal with on the whole rebuild. Get a small fine blade flat head screwdriver. If the cone washers in the steering arms don't want to play nice (and they usually don't) loosen the cones as much as possible by tapping (a brass hammer works well) the top of the stud, soaking them again with PB, then find the slot in the cone washer. Take the screwdriver and gently tap the screwdriver into the slot to spread it a little and start wiggling the cone around, Eventually it will end up loose enough to come out.
Count the shims that are under the steering knuckle arms and knuckle bearing plates. Keep these in order and located top to bottom where they go. Put them back in the same places. This save considerable grief.
Pack the knuckle ball and the birfield joints with grease. When the axle is back in, pack more grease around before you stick the rotor on. There is a square nut on the top front side of the knuckles. When the unit is back together, take this nut off and send some more grease down into the hub.
This isn't like an American rig where you can crank the wheel bearing down to where the rotor doesn't spin, then back them off a bit. See the 43fp of torque/3/8". DO the 43fp preset on the bearings a few times to force the grease into the bearings, then button them up.
Bunch of good article in the Yota Make and Model thread on rebuilding the axles. Don't pay too much attention to the "fish scale" stuff. I would only use this if you either mixed and matched parts from different axles, mixed the shims up, or replaced all of the knuckle bearings and races. Even then it isn't that critical...
It may be marginally easier rebuilding it off the rig, but it isn't that big a deal to do it on the rig. I wouldn't bother taking the whole thing off unless you wanted to take the whole thing down and get some good coats of paint on it. If this is the first Yota axle you have done, I would do one side the "real way" and practice the Birfield quick repair/trail fix on the other side. Both are detailed in the Yota Make and Model thread or you can Google "Birfield Trail Fix" and probably be directed to the Yota FAQ on Pirate 4x4 where this is located. This is also linked in the Toyota FAQ in the Yota Make and Model on this site. If you do take the whole axle out, it would be a good time to add an addition hole to the backside of the spring perch if the perches you have don't have 3 holes. This will allow you to relocate the axle forward roughly an inch. Leave about 3/8" spacing between the holes if you have to drill new ones.
I have the hub wrench if you just want to borrow one..Also a mess of spare parts if you happen to lose something.

I actually wish I had left my axle on the truck for the rebuild. I pulled it out because I added a truss and knuckle gussets and its easier to weld. That said, its much more stable and easier to work with on the rig IMHO. I set it on jack stands, and it was falling all over the place and was just a pain in the butt. I say jack it up, get yourself a comfy chair to sit in, and go to town. Let me me know if you want any help too. I also have the 54/55mm "socket" you'll need for that. If you want to purchase one, they have them at Toolking off of 6th between Kipling and Sims.
I agree with Brody, especially with going with the Marlin axle seals. They are way easier to install and are much much higher quality. Also, unless things have a changed (and I haven't heard anything to say they have), if you go with a Trail Gear rebuild kit, DO NOT USE THEIR TRUNNION BEARINGS!!! They are chinese made crap, and will almost certainly fail. Go with high quality Koyo or Timken bearings. Thats a bad day on the trail if those break.
Lastly, if you do get the Longfield lifetime wipers, I would consider getting slightly longer and harder bolts (they are tiny). I broke at least one trying to get the seal tight. Its definitely much stiffer then the stock style, and a bit thicker too.
Good luck, and get ready to be really really greasy.

If i do take it off i was going to fab up 2 stands up with a cradle and a u-bolt to hold the axle still. Also i planned to make the stand adjustable height so it could be worked on comfortably. I might be re-gearing as well, but i am not sure yet. I think it might be a good idea to learn to do it in place.

Both have their merits, but if you were going to take it completely out, it would sure be a great time to do some basic axle housing gussets and clean up all the springs. You can either make the gussets out of some 2 1/2x2 1/2 stock or 2x3 stock or, even better, pick up some plain Jane gussets form Davez Off Road. Don't get any with the cutesy holes or Yota cut outs. These are merely rust makers.
If you do go this route, I would take my spring packs apart and run them down to Midwest Spring where they will re arch your springs for $7-8 a leaf. They will also make an add a leaf, you cut to fit, with a centered hole for $60. Should you want to mess with some diff armor, I have a 60 diff template cover you can borrow. If you don't want to cut the ring plate yourself, Altitude Steel gave me a quote of $40 to make one.
Just some thoughts...

I've made a few more decisions.
I am going to do a SOA for my suspension, and from what i have been reading that should yield around 6"s of left with the stock springs. I have been reading up on a few of the more popular FJ60 SOA builds and have decided i will solve the steering issues involved with it the Hi steer kit from all road. I have found a few SOA kits for the 60, for around 450-700 dollars. The money i save here is more than enough to pay for the Hi steer from all road, and still be cheaper than a 4" lift. I am still nervous about the COG being to high, but i have been reading and seen a bunch of people who do the ome 4in then within a few years go to the soa setup. So i'd like to just jump right to the SOA. This set up should also allow me to clear 35's with minimal to no trimming.
I am going to remove the axles completely for the knuckle rebuild as i will have to do this for the SOA conversion. I plan on regearing to at least 4.56s if not 4.88(recommended by chris and have seen a few posts on mud about this) and i would like to install a locker in at least the rear axle if not both.(Lockers depend on how big my vacation check actually is this year)
I am debating on whether or not i need to stepup to stronger axles to run 35's or not.
Now just waiting for the money to come through.
The body might be coming off for this, so a bare minimal restoration can be performed to help keep this rig around for some while.
Any comments/concerns/suggestions are more than welcome. Especially in regards to the SOA conversion vs SUA

My only comment on a very personal decision is that everyone I know that's rolled a 60 was SOA. ;)

November 3rd, 2010, 06:11 AM
Like what Chris (the old dude with the new 4Runner) said: people who rolled the 60s probably all had the SOAs. They also probably tried to drive the rig like they didn't...Anytime you lift a rig higher than stock, whether it is with an SOA, suspension, body lifts, blocks, bigger tires, etc, etc, you are going to change the physics of the way it handles and you damn sure need to realize this before you hike that corner at 65 when the sign says 35, or stab the brakes as you turn the wheel....
4:88s work very well with 37 inch tires. 4:56 gears are on the low edge of the "work very well with 37 inch tires" spectrum. 4:88s are on the low end of the 35" tires, too, but will work OK.
Your stock axles are plenty strong enough to run 35s and even 37s. 37s without upgrading to a Longfield hardened axle are pushing things a bit.
A Locker in the rear is going to get you a long way. If there is any way that you can just do the rear locker, by all means do so. You will find that you can run many trails in 2WD with a locked rear. I would spend the money for the rear locker and if there was extra $$ left for the front locker, I would throw that towards a lowered geared T case.

Is the Marlin 4.7 Crawl box worth looking at? or am i better off regearing and doubling? The LC doesn't seem to have to many doubling options.

Well the FJ60 Is officially mine! Its last run for a good while is going to be on Miller Rock. After that and i have the ranger back its going under for some major surgery. Its a good cross between restro and modifications.
Overview* is-
Ford 351W Swap
Yota 5speed Swap
Interior Restro
Rust Prevention
SOA Conversion
LOTS OF LOTS OF ARMOR
Hi Steer
Re-gear
Dual T-Cases
Lockers
Half Doors/Tube Doors
Exo Cage
*Not listed in order to be perfromed
No worries though because i will have the 77 Back on the trails for the FJs down time seeing as how long and $$$ this last seems to be. I have permission from katey to build ONE rig for Camping/Off Roading only and i believe the FJ is my best candidate for these goals.

I am just going to replace the valve seals, and throw a head gasket in it while i am up here. I received my parts yesterday, and except from some tooling(which i can snag from work) I should be all good to go.
I plan on replacing the 2F with a 408 Ford(Stroked 351W) some time in the next 2 years, so i am either going to buy the 2F forklift rebuild kit, and freshen the motor up, or i am going to just let this one go till shes in the ground.
The good news is, I just have to put the motor in my ranger when i get home and it will be back up and running.

The 2F that was used in Toyota forklifts is identical to the ones used in our cruisers minus a gasket or 2. So instead of having to pay 1200+ for rebuild kits, you can get a high quality forklift one(read just as good or better) for $570.

I have a write-up on Sascha's build that I'm working on but just have not been able to get it completed. With the head off, I would recommend that you drop the oil pan and check the bearing clearances; at a minimum you will know they are in spec and if they are worn/damaged it would be easy enough to slap new ones in. Of course, Sascha started out with the intent of just replacing rings, but when the motor was inspected he determined it needed some machine work. Both engines are running strong and better than they were before. Ultimately, it is up to you to determine whats appropriate for your situation but I would vote to pull it all out, rebuild it and then not worry about it for a long, long time. :D

Thanks for the offer! I would drop the pan, and such if this was a normal circumstance repair. However this is more of a emergency road side head rebuild/gasket replace. I talked to my boss yesterday and he was ok with me bringing in my parts and using the parts washer and wasting some down time on the head. I managed to get all the valves out and cleaned, no more nasty carbon! granted they didnt look too bad for the abuse this motor has had. Im defiantly in need of an actual valve job, however it was running fine before i cleaned it up and blew the head gasket, so i am not too worried about it. I blue checked a few of the bad valves and they seemed to have around 90% contact. So i grabbed some lapping compound and a drill, and plan on doing a bare minimum regrind to ensure 100%. Granted it wont be at the exact angles or such, it should get the fj home.

I finally have all the plans on the drawing board for the build this coming year. Its going to be a long build, the motor and transmission set up is probably going to be last/ take the most time. But here is the general idea.
-SOA Kit from RuffStuff
-High Steer from 4x4 Labs
- 4.7 Toybox from Marlin
- Toyota 5 Spd
-FORD 408(stroked 351windsor)
-Custom Armor( I have been designing my armor for this rig, for about 5-6 months maybe. I have everything built in CAD so now its time to follow the plans.)
- Minimum of 10k Winch
- Longfield Axles- Front
- Poly Performance- Rear
- 4.56's In the Diffs
- ARBs front and rear(may take a while for the funds on this)
- Strech Wheelbase 3-4 Inches(2-3 front axle/1-2 rear axle)
- Hydro Assist Steering(Cause i can)
Built for 37's Minus gearing choice, But going to run 35's and take it from there.

For the wiper I went with the Trail Gear (http://www.lowrangeoffroad.com/index.php/yotamain/4runner/toyota-front-axle-parts/trail-safe-toyota-knuckle-ball-polyurethane-wiper-seals.html) kit with the rock rings.

If you are talking about the bolts that hold the wiper seal down, then I believe they are M6 x 1.0 thread. Its the same thread size as the bolts that hold the plate on the front of the lockout hubs too (different lengths though). I believe they are around 20mm bolts, so something around there would probably do to replace them with studs. If you are going with rock rings too, then I would go a bit longer.

This is in a slight need of an update. The front axle has been successfully rebuilt, no more leaks and the fluids nice and grease/water free! I haven't started the 60 up since early January, and as expected i went to try and turn her over; No luck the battery was 100% dead(Finally bit the dust), so i hook her up to the super duty(The SVT isnt strong enough at idle to jump anything), get back in the 60 turn the key and give a few pumps of the ol gas peddle and she came right up to speed. It was a nice surprise. There are also some new ideas on the drawing bored for Misfit.

The 60 lost her headgasket again, but I chuck that up to poor installation last time I did it, the conditions weren't ideal, and I just needed to make it home. I also have Wyoming plates on my rig currently and am desmogging it in attempts to straighten out some of issues it has. Once my Wyo plates are expired next year, i plan on registering the rig at my aunts house in dillion, so hopefully the desmog wont be to big of an issue. However i am keeping all the smog stuff Im taking off.

Well it doesn't look like I'll be ready this weekend, but should be good to go on the fj next weekend. The machine shop I use has been outrageously busy the last few months. Hell they have has my 400 on an engine stand waiting to be balanced for 2 months! But they said my head should only be a week to a week and a half out. It's just a little mom and pop type outfit and am a frequent customer of there's so I'm happy to see them doing so much business, even if it means my stuffs on the back burner because of our relationship.
And Paul, way more busy than I'd like to be, but it makes the time go by fast and gives me things to do. So I guess I can't complain too much.

Getting Cleaner! I ended up pulling all the stuff for the cruise control, it never worked anyway, and always seemed to be in my way some how or another when i was trying to do something. Between that, and removing all the stuff for smog, There is a lot more room under the hood now. She doesn't look to bad internally for 195k, Its weird though because on a few cylinders you still see cross hatching... Also redoing the grill, this time trying rustoleum hammer paint instead of plastidip. We'll see how it holds up in comparison.

Decided to tackle the dreaded radio issue today, while I am waiting for parts to get back from the machine shop. Previous owner left the radio head in by drywall screws and they gave up the ghost not to long ago. Up until about 20 min ago, i never realized i could pull the dash apart in <30min and just let the radio do its thing. So I pulled the dash and decided to fix it.

Put a deposit down on my new 2F yesterday and got to see its build sheet. It's a 78 2F that was bored .030 over with a .075 mill on the head. Also has a custom ground camshaft and valve train to compensate for the milling on the head. And the entire motor was balanced to within a gram. Someone was building her for a little more fun than just a factory rebuild. Pretty stoked to check out what a fresh mildly built 2f feels like, granted its still only a 2F...

Started taking out the Transfer-case and Transmission today, and ended up putting that project on hold after finding out in order to drop my Tcase i have to split the halves and undo internal bolting for the tcase to come off. And moved back to some dashboard stuff. Made my brackets for the stereo and hit them with some hammered paint. Also learned that the sharpest edge i have floating around my house i can beat on is on a 2X4. Other than that i started making a wiring harness for my inclinometer(tilt meter/ clock), and got it installed into the dash. And came up with some ideas for my new cb speaker. Also learned i have pretty much nothing practical for cutting 22 gauge...

So the largest issue i have ran into with my new motor is mainly that because it is a 78 block, the holes for where the power steering mount, aren't drilled. However after some searching it looks like i can use my smog bracket to add a power steering pump. I am also going to replace all the dash lights with led's since a few of them are burnt out and need replacing anyway.

Managed to get the transmission and tcase dropped, and just finished cleaning up as the storm rolled in. Only real hang up was having to crib up the engine some since the motor mounts are so far forward the engine has a lot of sag. The combo was still fairly heavy, but not nearly as bad as the guys on ih8mud made it out to be. Sure was a lot lighter than just the 4spds out of my older fords. Pics to come. Going after the motor on Sunday hopefully.

Here's the lil beast, for such a short transmission/tcase she stilled was fairly heavy. Can't say I'm to fond of how the drivetrain is setup on the 60. The tcase has internal bolting holding it to the transmission, and then the bell housing literally goes around the clutch and flywheel, so you have to unbolt the transmission from the bell housing. Not really an issue I guess, but just not what I'm used to or like.

Spent the rest of the afternoon putting the plugs in the head where the air rail used to go. As well as pulling the power steering, air pump, water pump, AC compressor, as well as all AC related components. Finished off the night by pulling the radiator, and condenser, and getting ready to pull the motor.
Also learned why I always had such bad interference with my radiator fan and the shroud. Turns out the nut underneath the AC compressor that holds the motor mount down, managed to work its way off, and let gravity do the work of holding my motor in.
It seems like it also worked out to my advantage that I never got around to power washiing my engine off. As there is loads of oil and grease caked on to it, but it never left a drip mark on the driveway. Figure it was being held in by the grime.

On a side note, the front suspension has never looked better! Granted there's pretty much no weight left in the car, as half or more of the engine weight is being supported by a jack stand. Hopefully when I re-arch the spare springs and add a leaf, it'll stay some what around this height. Just as a reference, the distance now between the axle and bump stop is twice as big as it is with the weight in the rig.

I ran into some issues, had a cracked intake manifold, as well as a cracked tcase, and of course it had to be on the half attached to the transmission. Which you cant seem to find for some reason, so i ended up with a whole different t-case assembly, but may have lost functionality of my 4wd light. Eh oh well. Also managed to get the new side covered installed and and hopefully the machine shop has some good news for me tomorrow with the resurfacing of my flywheel, as its approaching the end of its friction life... Also spent some time installing the hard piping for my cooling system, but am still waiting on an after market engine oil cooler, as well as doing some customizing for my new power steering set up. Oh and I did a renuild on the carb.

Yer gittin' there. Just keep pluggin' along and you'll make it. I know where you're coming from. The little things kinda suck some times. Just finished modding the drivers side header and drivers side of the Y pipe on the wife's S-10 Blazer so it will clear the driveshaft. Only things left are the rear replacement U-bolts, the transfer case/transmission crossmember, the front output yoke on the transfer case and then it's off to Bill to have him modify a couple of driveshafts.

Did the 2 Lo Mod, yesterday, and finally got that beast of a Trans/TC up in there and installed. Really makes me appreciated T-Cases that can be easily separated from transmissions. Sadly all it took was getting the girls(Katey and her friend Sada) out there and some how it magically slide into place. And they also helped me finish installing the Distributions 100%, because the engine need spun while some slight down pressure was applied to the dizzy to get the oil pump drive shaft to align.

After switching to the older style block, A few changes had to be made in the coolant system. And because of hose routing and some of the heater pipes being to rusted to use, I deleted about 5 hard pipes, and a significant number of hoses. The only draw back now, is the return from the main heater, is ran into the rear heater, so in order for it to function the rear heater must be left on the hottest setting to allow coolant to flow. I figure its not to big of an or deal, because if its cold enough to be running the heater there is no reason the rear one shouldn't be on, granted its not like the rear heaters in FJ60s pump out that much heat anyways.
As far as the temp sender, and heater core feed line, I ended up using some brass fittings from ace, over the OEM set up, as it eliminates some hard piping, and allows for better hose routing. I also swapped the location of the 2 ports, as it works better for vacuum lines. I don't believe i will see much change in the Temp readings despite the swap.
Another Issue i ran into is with no OEM oil coolers(water cooled) to be found, I had to make a few changes to my thermostat housing, as well as run a "older" style water pump. If you look at the pics of the 2 water pumps, you can tell the older style as it only has 2 inlets/outlets vs the newer style with 3. I ended up adding a large after market oil cooler that increases my capacity almost 1.25 quarts, however it is a simple air cooled system.
Heres a few updated pictures and hopefully she'll be up and running by this weekend for break in.
However, still working on a solution to the power steering issue.

I thought about, and in the end I probably will eliminate it all together and get rid of some more hoses. But for now I left it in mostly for the extra coolant capacity.

It is going to a cruiser lover at least. Here is his other FJ60. He's also got a 40, and towing it off with a 60. Makes me feel much better about my loss.

Why not eliminate the rear heater Chris? I did because I didn't care if my passengers got cold and it put all possible heat to the front.
If I ever ride with you in the winter, I dibs front seat!:D

Getting out of the 4x4 world for the most part. I wanna pursue my dreams of stage rally more seriously while I'm still young. And before my career gets in the way anymore.
