View Full Version : Barbour Forks and Devil's Canyon Cleanup

I got back home fine and hope that Gregg did. He was having issue with the fuel delivery on his rig and headed back early on.

Great to see everyone and to meet everyone I hadn't met before! What a great turn out, too! I don't know what the grand total of rigs was, but we had a bunch. Ash led the Devil's Canyon side and Rob led the Barbour Fork side. On the Barbour Fork trail, Charlie spilt off with about 5 rigs to start the run from the opposite direction than Rob's group, which worked out very well. Ash said that they Devil's Canyon side was pretty damn clean, so maybe the folks who use it the most are taking a hint and cleaning up a bit more. We found much the same on the Barbour Fork trail, with there being very little off trail trash and only the usual party spot trash at the bigger camp spots.

Running the trail in the opposite direction rather than coming down all the harder sections, added a bit of flavor to things. I had never done it that way before, but always thought that it would be a bit more fun. Since I didn't take any pictures, I'll shut up and let someone else fill in the blanks..

Good day, and, as usual, a great group. I hope that everyone had a good day and a safe trip home.

X2...Had a great time...
We made it home fine despite the unknown trans/t-case leak from the ride up. Before leaving I took the front drive shaft off and that seemed to do the trick for the ride home. I'm also hoping that Bill made it home safe. He was having some steering issues on the trail and at the bottom. I know Ed and Robert were going to follow him.
I would like to thank everyone from myself and my friend Joe ( the little red Trail Blazer) for the help and patients. He had a really good time and think there is now hope for him with his Bronco that he has.
As we are just getting home we will go through the pics and get them posted in the next day or so.

Another good cleanup run. Excellent turnout. I'd say we started with about 19 rigs and even more people.

As Pete said, there wasn't as much crap on the sides of the trail this year. Of course, it's early in the season.

Thanks to Happy for finding the trailhead for me, after I guided everyone around Idaho Springs for a while. I think I had Chrisitis this morning. (That would be a neologism for "directionally challenged.")

I'll post some pics shortly. Still need to process them.

Hope everyone got home OK.

I made it home okay. I didn't have any more fuel pressure problems. I wish I could have ran the rest of the trail but I didn't want to get stuck out there. It was good to see all you guys.

Right back-atcha with the "new best friend" thing, Roland. Annika had a great time playing with with your kids. Im never gonna live it down that I took the back bench out of my Jeep for this run and Alley couldn't ride with us. Next time, I will make sure she has a safe place to sit if she wants to ride with me!

Great day. Fantastic to meet all of you. Ash was a great leader for the Devil's run. Thank you, Ash! Krista did a FANTASTIC job for her first trail run and Roland and the kids were great company and I truely hope to wheel with all of you again.

It was most fun for me today to witness how different vehicles have to approach the trail. The big, huge, Suburbans vs. Jeeps = different challenges. Fun to watch and learn! So cool! How 'bout we swap one day.........eerrrrrrrrrrrrr........maybe NOT! (I'd roll your truck with my luck!)

I only managed about 3 pics the whole trip. I was leading the group after we split off from ash's group, and was without a passenger, and also forgot my camera, so the ones i snagged were with my phone. It was pretty uneventful on our side, filled 2 trash bags(maybe overall it was already very clean) and a 35 gallon bucket with some stereo and car parts. I am not sure if anyone behind me got very many pics. The trail was pretty easy, with a few rockier spots on the spur we cleaned up. Thats about all there is to report from The second devils canyon group.

We had a great time as usual, kind of hard not to...didn't break anything and a new trail for me. Kind of a cool way to check out a new area, slow and scouring the area for trash! (Kind of) we ended up with about a half bag of trash, and not really any pics...some on the phone but not much to show off.
My friends had never been wheelin, and they had a great time. I might have convinced James to buy a beater and join in all the fun.
As usual, a great group...I would like to make it up sometime soon to run the other side, these 2 trails are fun and very close to town.

Certainly there was trash to pick up but we had to look pretty hard for it along the trail. The usual trash and broken glass in the campsites. Compared to the 4 or 5 previous clean up runs I have done the trash was minimal. In past trips my truck bed was filled with trash bags and junk. This time I only used 3/4 of a 45 gallon trash bag. Half of that was from the campsite we cleaned up friday where we camped. Barbour and Devil's Canyon were a challenge for my Ranger. I suspect as does Fordboy and Roo that my 4 wheel drive was not engaging and so I think I was running mostly in 2 wheel drive all weekend...So the Ranger is going to the shop this week to get checked out.

I suspect the lack of trash was due to our cold wet spring. People have just not been out that much. I bet the next clean up will yield twice as much.

If that is a vacuum activated 4WD engagement system, chances are that there is a broken, kinked, or cracked line leading up the activator. Easy to check. Look underneath and if you see some small black hard lines going to a contraption on the front axle assembly, then it probably is. I don't know without looking, especially for a Ranger, but XJs use this system and the vac lines are a constant source of BS. At any rate, engaging the 4WD in the cab send a signal to the actuator. If it is a vacuum one and there is a leak, you will hear it.

Thanks Pete... I will see about checking into that.. I was playing around this AM, tring to engage 4WD and I really don't think the 4 Wheel drive is engaging at all... So I am almost sure I was running all weekend in 2WD which makes Barbour and Devils Canyon quite challenging for a stock ranger with a novice driver. Where we camped was the 2nd major clearing you come to after going right at the first fork on Barbour. That takes you very quickly to the steep, sandy, rocky hill with the hard line and bypass. The last 3 times on Barbour I had no trouble driving up the bypass (easier line), but since it seems I was in 2WD this time, I had to get strapped up twice by the F150 that was with me. So... taking a positive spin, as inexperienced as I am, I did pretty good with a 2WD stock ranger on those two trails. Thanks again for the tip on suggesting for what the problem might be... If you were not so busy with work these days I would just come over to your house and see if you could take a look at it. :)

8 rigs opted to hit Devil's Canyon, thanks to Roland for tagging along so we would have a winch in the group. With 8 rigs, we split into two groups, allowing us to clean up each spur in a timely fashion. Thanks to Chris for leading and Reese for sweeping the second group! Thanks to Rob I had printed out a few copies of the MVUM for Devil's Canyon, allowing us to do this confidently. Here's all 8 of us at the start of the trail:

I enjoyed this trail. No challenges, just bump, something the Subaru could have done (altho because of some of the steep long hills I would have burned my clutch up a bit, so happy I didn't bring it). It DEFINITELY got tight in places. I remember dangling a wheel off a little once or twice, and definitely tucking my mirrors in. Loads of pin striping, even for the wranglers. Views were great, it was SO GREEN, and very little traffic.

Trail opened up at the "Y" of the loop. Very nice! Also made for a great lunch stop. I put out a fire (it had been huge, and was just smoldering) of a group of pretty slobby campers. They had food everywhere, bottles and cans and metal in their firepit. Just as I put the fire out, the wind snagged a bag of chips they left sending it zinging past my head. They had been shooting nearby too, hadn't cleaned up anything. Needless to say, I was VERY angry. I left them a note. Not to worry, it was respectful. I just hope they take heed and clean up their act. Should've taken pictures, but forgot. What can I say... Karla was working...

We came across this guy in the middle of the trail near the beginning. He saw the 4 rigs coming down and just froze. Had to stop my rig, hop out and go talk to him. Nice brand new Outback, no skid plates, aftermarket (rally armor) mudflaps. No recovery gear that I could see looking in his car. It was an auto, so that's good, no clutch destruction on the steep hills. I asked him politely if he wouldn't mind pulling over as he was at a wide spot in the trail, and there was no place for us to get out of his way. He said he would, but asked me to direct him so he didn't "fall off the trail." He was by himself... I warmed him of a deep hole up on a switchback that could have sucked him in, and told him to be careful.

Thanks Pete...I might just take you up on that... I have had intermittent trouble with my front passenger wheel hub assembly, could that be the culprit?

Last post for this issue here. Just PM me. Here is what the problem may be:

Most of the time a '98-'00 Rangerhttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/2_bing.gif (http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/912321-98-ranger-4wd-not-engaging.html#) 4x4 problem has to do with the pulse vacuum hublock (PVH) engagement system. The TC motors are somewhat prone to problems, but often can be serviced back to good.

That was from the Ford Truck forum.

It was my first time ever leading a trail
Not in my book

Looks like it was a good day to be out. Sorry I've missed it, I was having a good ol' time at the races though

Ash did a great job leading the trail! First time or not, he was focused on the mission!!! I loved the way he handled the abandoned camp fire...WOOT!

But hey, Ash... the Jeeps are only holding the "shiney new paint" look temporarily. Considering I could count my different trail runs on three or four hands (all easy - medium) and Krista is just starting out, given time, you can imagine the paint getting "ehh" in no time. (By the way, I'm hesitant to wash it because I KNOW the pinstriping is worse now and the hubby is going to kill me)! Not really!

Great time! I'll post up pics if I have time tomorrow (all I got was a couple scenic shots and family-type shots at lunch). But my nephew just arrived in town to begin our DividE Ride - so don't hold me to it. I'm a lil' bit busy! at the moment
