Thanks Bryan! Less snow than I would have expected at this time of the year, time for me to schedule a visit. :thunb:

I need to get down to that area to do some 4wheeling, I suppose. All I have ever done down there is to ice climb with some rock climbing thrown in for good measure. Kinda hard to justify the drive time, though...

Hey Pete, the drive isn't that bad and the trails are worth the drive x10 ;)

Only been down that way once or twice years ago in the summer. All of the other trips have been winter trips for the ice climbing. The last one was a 5 day trip with some buddies about 4 years ago to the ice park.. Most of the rock climbing in that area is only OK, but the ice climbing is stellar and worth the drive if you are into ice climbing...Seemed like it took forever to get there....

Also the gas cost is prohibitive...about $120 round trip with no wheeling gas. Gonna be awhile before we do a 5 1/2 hour one way trip and can justify that much for gas....and certainly won't be driving that much on a 2-3 day trip anyway...

It is well worth it for a long week end. It is the most beautiful part of the state! Plus, you could make a loop out of the trip and wheel Montrose and GJ's 21 road etc.!

Kind of a thread revival here, but does anyone know if shooting is allowed down in that area?

You can shoot pretty much anywhere on National Forest Land in Colorado unless it is specifically posted not to. Land that doesn't fall into this category is hit or miss. I have shot various guns all over the state without any problems at all.

That is truly beautiful!!! I find it so hard to imagine the miners along with the railroads building those roads as toll roads over a 100 years ago.

In all the times I've been there I've never so much as heard a gun. It may be legal but I suspect everyone prefers doing something else.

I have shot various guns all over the state without any problems at all, including the Ouray area, both summer and winter. Ouray is one of those little mountain towns where everyone has about 10 guns....and shoots them.

You have the Gunnison, Uncompahgrere, San Juans, and Grand Mesa are all close. All allow shooting. There are more gun clubs in Ouray than you can shake a stick at...

Here is a link to "shooting ranges" to give you some idea. Some are public, some private:

I hate shooting ranges....

Thanks for the info. I wasn't really looking for a shooting range, really just checking to see if I did bring some guns, that it'd be alright if I shot them into a birm/etc.

Those pictures are fantastic. We spent only one night as we drove through, but are kicking ourselves that we didn't just settle for that destination being our spot for a week! The morning we drove out, we went through an incredible storm with pretty much zero visability. The passes are very narrow and it was very scary to say the least as you couldn't see a thing! (We were heading to Mesa Verde). I had my soft top on with the windows out and we got hailed on really hard. My little girl tried to duck and avoid getting hit, but the attempt was futile. (Ouch)! I'll go back there at any cost. Probably the most beautiful part of the country I have ever seen!
