View Full Version : Thinking about my first Jeep mod... yes? No? Ideas

My Jeep Rubicon has proved itself to be everything I need for the trails I want to ride so far. It came with some nice Rubi rock rails that have proved themselves several times over the past couple years. The only thing I think I'm missing is side steps. I know I can buy the new Rubi rails that have steps attached, but they are a bit pricey. I was hoping maybe some of you fab guys would have the skills to work with the ones I have. (Obviously for a price). But I don't want to run the risk of paying someone to weld on a tube and then have it break on the next rock I fall off of.. All suggestions are appreciated! Can this be done???. Will it affect my warranty?

No warranty worries as this doesn't really modify the vehicle.
Here are some DIY kit options to avoid starting from scratch (if you care about that),

IMHO, unless you can weld these yourself you may just want to consider some bolt on rock rails and sell your Rubi rails on craigslist/ebay/whatever.
I'm sure the FR4x4 fab guys will chime in with other options.
In hindsight I overpaid for mine. I went with the Mopar ones (bad pic),

Better pic but for a 2-door,

I'm not mechanical at all - so I will need to pay for whatever I decide to do. But I was thinking that the original Rubi rails are so expensive to begin with, I'd rather modify what I already have. I've done a lot of searching, but haven't come up with an option other than replacing them with the new rails w/steps. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that someone here has the answer. I'll take a huge loss if I sell my current rails and buy new ones. I really just want steps added to make it easier for my kid to get in and also to add a place for you guys on this forum to jump on to save me from a flop!!!

I'm not familiar with the rails you have but Brody modified some FJCruiser rails very nicely. Maybe that's possible?

Not much. Is it attached to the frame? If so, Pete might be able to extend it out a few inches

Yeah - I think it's attached to the frame. So I would think that it would be a "weld on" job. But I don't know. I don't see any holes in it where you could bolt something on. I might be dreaming the impossible - but thought I'd ask.

Would be an easy job. 10 minutes with a tubing bender, 4 bends, 2 pieces of 1.75" tube and 22" of weld and you'd have some steps. For an even more trick step, you could have some 1/8" flat plate dimpled and welded dimple up to aid in traction under the doors.

Its working now, but wasn't this morning. I dont see why it would be to hard to modify those, looks like a simple enough task.

Can anyone tell me what I might expects to pay to have this done (parts and labor)?

Thanks for the suggestion, Charles. I met with Sean today and he agrees that the Poisonspyder kit would be a good option for me and has offered to do the welding for what I think sounds like a very fair price.
So I think this is the way I might go (but first have to convince my husband). Keep fingers crossed for me!

Jackie, all the guys know the trick so I'll share it since it applies to all spouses.

After looking at Jackies rig the exsisting rails are made from 1/8" and bolt to the rockers pinch weld w/ 8each 1/4"bolt and two 3/8" bolts to the underside of the body support bracket, which really would not offer a lot of protection to the body so after talking it over the news setup would be mounted to the frame as well as the exsisting rails this would give stonger protection and and also provide what she wanted most a step for the little folks and to be able to hold a few folks on those tippy sections of trail to help keep from tipping over. SO after talking about it why not get both in one deal steps/protection which is the idea.
