Recently I signed up to be an online/phone mentor to students receiving grants from the Orphan Foundation of America to attend college/university. So far I have gotten quite a positive response from my students and the most challenging aspect is keeping track of their classes and activities. If you have some extra time during the week, please consider giving your attention to kids without parents who do not have the usual support system as they start this new stage of their lives.

"As is so often the case with new programs, we have more students signed up than volunteers to coach them. Who do you know in your own circle of colleagues, friends and family who might like to coach an OFA student? Make a team - it’s fun to do something worthwhile with people you know, and over time you might involve a large group of ASP coaches within your community, all focused on helping foster youth succeed in college. Did you know that the majority of young people in foster care are African American or Hispanic, and that there are more boys and young men than girls in care? In order to best serve these young people, therefore, we’re particularly recruiting men of color."
So, please tell people about OFA’s Academic Success Program, and have them email me (waynez@orphan.org) if they’re interested in participating. We’ll be glad to get them started right away!
