Making an old Girl feel young again...

well my dad and i have not done any mods yet or actual building but she has become much stronger and more reliable, hopefully i remembered ot all.... but the dash now all works and the lights are working all the time now, couple random screws and bolts throughout the dash and interior from dumb ppl that cant keep track of 8 screws... got the rear dome light working.. new light switch as old one was worn and loose.. rewired the stereo speakers so they sound better and work better... onto the outside.. put the correct bulb in the brake light so that works.. new wipers..redid a few wires on the fuel pump(it worked but the wires would prob break on the first trail).. again screws and bolts all over.. got a junkyard aircleaner since the old one had holes cut in the metal sides for some reason.. changed out the 3 blade fan for a 5 blade fan..new cap and rotor and wires and plugs (one of the wire was 3/4 burned through as it layed on the manifold) cleaned the crap out of the throttle body.. new motor oil and filter..... thats about all so far now to check the rest of the oils and seals and to change the body lift for a suspension lift :)

I get it and I did like that kid. I have this weird impulse to try to mother kids who need guidance and stuff. I think sometimes young men have random thoughts that they express more often than the rest of us. They don't get accused of being senile and these thoughts are all new and shiny for them. 18-20 year old boys are kind of like puppies sometimes, cute and need a leash. :D

ok got around to fixing the hole in the back of the floor ...not because its a hole but because its sucks alot of exhaust in .... this is made of a few pieces of flashing used to direct water on the roof of your house... oh and i used undercoating rust resistant paint to try and slow it down some... tomorrow i will have to work on the second row of rivets and make the edges flatter and stuff it full of foam :) and in the last pic you can see the body lift pretty well lol (eewie):erm:

I have some left over Grace Ice and Water shield for roofing, also known as Bitchothane in the trades, that works extremely well for putting over patches like this to seal them. The same stuff is used around windows in a narrower roll, which I also have some of. Both can be found at Depo or Lowes, but it isn't cheap. If you aren't going to be up this way for a bit, stop at places where there are people doing roofing and see if they have some some scraps. It looks and feels more like rubber and is used a lot on better homes.

ok filled the rear floor with caulk and that is now done :) got the fan shroud to fit lower on the radiator cause the body lift and it is held on with plumbers strap and yes that one bunjee cord is staying on there to help hold it :) and after a few hours and breaking two redwood 2x2s me and my dad got the gas tank pounded out pretty well and got some seal it stuff for the pick up ..... the tank so far has held up but there is a small leak on the top of the pick up and we do not know what from (thinking might have done the O ring seal wrong)

well since the pick up for the blazer is still leaking alil bit run it low on gas and just cover the whole thing in sealant and say if the pump goes bad (its aftermarket any way) i will just buy all new parts and call it good and then get suspension lift....... then prob need tires then sliders or a bumper

well i did a little modification to the front fenders to get some extra wheel clearance since now with the sway bar out (wow its big) it flexes alot more...those of you that more xp feel free to give me pointers or advice :D

If it was me, i would either cut into it about a 1/4 inch with a grinder, sawzall, portaband, etc. and bend it flat so you have no shape edges exposed, or i would come up with a way to cover it. Less sharp stuff to cut things on the better seems to be a good train of thought on something like this i would think. Plus if your like me one day you'll go to change a tire and bend over funny or start to fall reach out and grab the sharp edge and cut yourself and be even more upset about the whole situation. Then again i see people who leave the cut edge exposed like that all the time so it must not be too much of a concern for others. I must just be a clumsy oaf who rather take the 5 min now then the pain later.

yaa its 2 layers deep so i didnt know how to cut just the inner one out and then bend the outer one over since they have about a 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch gap between depending how high you are on the body

Most people just smooth out the radius a bit, then gap fill. You can do it really sweetly and fold the piece over, make a series of small notches, then fold it over or simply cut it out like you did. That Spray foam x3 insulation works wonders for gap filling and lasts forever (including on you skin). If you have some really sharp edges and can't weld or bend a piece to fit, then maybe just split some vacuum line and silicon it onto the sharp stuff.

i like the hose i dea there ..once i get it more to a final shpe i may have to do that gives it kind of a nice finished look also ...i did take a file to it at least so its not super sharp but if you put alot of pressure into it will sill prob cut you

Since I don't know much about the GM products, I'd have to see it before making decisions. It seems like cut and fold could be adapted to a partial radius.

well a minor accident did alot of dmg to the old girl lil car hit me in the trailer hitch and it bent the nuts out of the frame ....the license plate holder had to be bent up to fit around the hitch so thats how far it moved down:frown:

Hey Robert the rig looks good, I applaud the work you've done. Quick question about your seats. Mugen is a VERY popular JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) after market company that specializes in Honda and Acura parts mainly for racing. Are these seat covers or is the Mugen brand name actually on the seats. Reason I ask is because if their authentic they would catch a pretty penny for a tuner looking for some good JDM seats on craigslist. This would probably enough for some better rig seats and some left over for other things.

nope they are mugen seats and i have the 4 point harnesses for them also just took em out of the truck

There's not alot for sale from mugen on ebay as a reference point but I made a few calls to some tuner buddies and they said depending on the shape, if sold locally they might catch around $150-$250 for the pair. It might be worth seeing if there are any shops around the area that sell both racing and 4x4 parts and see if they'd be willing to do a trade. If not try craigslist, you shouldn't have any problem selling them for a few bucks.

okie i got a CB from one my dads long time friends chuck R. and i must thank him for this as he said either happy late christmas or early bday and my dad bought me an antena and got himself a cb and a mag antena .....mine is all in and will be tuned tomorrow (i lost power to the radio though for seme reason:erm:) my dad decided to replace his ash tray which he never uses with the cb for a much more professional look :)

uhh if i can get my camera at the right angle i have 2 spots on the fuse box with "shunts" (spacers far as i could tell) test light told me one is power full time and one is ignotion on position (i went full power) and bought this cool little add a circuit thing to fit in the fuse slot and have a fuse in it to run power to it so its on its own circuit

well did some upgrades / fab thing together on my truck so it is a little nicer:wrench: :) 1: remounted to stereo to something more than the plastic dash trim 2: aded vents to the dash to get some heat a little higher than feet level 3: sliding rear windows!!!!!! 4: new steering wheel from my dads car he was nice enough to part with :) 5: new tie rod ends for the truck that go from the gear box to the arm (not the ones to the tires) so the truck has less wander while driving :thumb:

It would have to be a 400M(Based off the Cleavland) as that is the only Ford "400". You can stroke a 351W to somewhere around 400 but it is a small block motor. Just curious if you had a 408 cause they are supposed to be bad ass, but you cant find them.

okay started to work on changing the lift around ion my truck this weekend with my dad....... body went really really easy compared to all these horror stories i hear...WOOHOO!!! took out the 3 inch cody lift and put in a 1 inch ..... the front springs are having a few problems mainly 1 bolt in the front that wont move......grrr.....

First , Robert made it sound easier than it was ,the sleeves were 3.75 long, .500 I.D. and .750 O.D. and we needed 4 of them. the bushings I had to reem out 4 new chevy bushing to the correct I.D. of .500 and a O.D. barrel dia. of 1.250. And pulling out 23 year old bushings and sleeves is not any fun. But it is on the wheels again, now we have to find a new noise before the run Sat.

okay i just fouind the unknown noise that appeared after the pre run and body lift combo time......the noise would only happen when at speeds above 50mph and then only when the truck is not under load (coasting or decelerating) and it was only a noise with no vibrations but it was loud enough to compare to putting the tranny in gear without pushing the clutch in (loud grinding) and since i could not find any "new" metal from things scraping i attributed it to the bearings and other parts in the clutch that are going out and currently making a lil bit of noise....this is not correct..this is the rear tranny mount :eek:

If I may make a suggestion since this is now two GMC tranny mounts that seem to have suffered the same fate, why don't you hedge your bets a little and weld a reinforcing plate or a beefy washer over the frame to mount holes as this seems to be a weak spot for some reason. Just do it on the new mount, especially since both of you expect to do some hard wheeling, and eliminate a possible cause for future breakage.

This is just my 2 cents, but I would sure do it on my heap just for peace of mind down the road.

replaced both U joints in the rear drive shaft rear yolk seal and rear t case output seal and was planning on putting in a straight drive shat my dad picked up (mine has a small dent) but found out auto trucks have different ujoints than manual trucks like mine is..... ona scary note while putting the wrench on the rear yolk nut to replace the seal and while the wrench hung on the nut and i moved to get a better angle to break it loose the wrench loosened the nut by gravity !!!!! it was barely even finger tight so now that that nut is tight some of the clunking play in the running in gear is gone :) and i guess my dad says that my rear end has a good ammount of yolk play so its not tooo great but thats okay as long as it lasts and we now know for 100% sure i have 3.42 gears in my truck :frown:

oh and on a side note i now have a full roadbox !! complete with my dads old tools from in the attic and my grandpas tools ....and a few of my dads duplicate sockets and screwdrivers and other things to fill in the sets :woot:

I don't think that's too much of a problem with a torquey V-8. When gas goes up, you'll be happy to coast along just above idle.

well finally got around to taking out the gas tank for i believe the 6th time total to straighten the frame out which my dad used his great vastness of experience to fix with a torch and a big hammer :) this went decntent until the side with the exhaust was attacked (exhaust gets in the way of EVERYTHING) vyt once this was done we found out a burb hitch is diferent since the burb we got it off has a dip in the rear of the frame so we had to pull out the old hitch and straighten the top of that one..... also got me some experience with the welder putting some triangles in :thumb: its not pretty but its solid as steel.....hehe...... and once everything was straight we found a 2inch by 10inch by 1/2inch thick chunk of steel in the shed that has been there for 20 something years to put on top of the frame with the hitch on the bottom to pinch the frame...... once that was bolted in and tightened to the moon the crazy job of getting the gas tank and skid plate in at one time was next (pain in the butt) but it is now all in and ready to go and can actually be used:woot:

iy would just be that 10 inch section as all the fastory crossmembers and stuff are riveted on so that might make it slightly weaker since that front point is the rear leaf spring perch (kinda like tacomas go from box to C frame) plus the top and side of the C held up so just beefed the crap out of the bottom and made it tight

Ah makes sense. I love the old broncos for that wonderful tube steel frame! The rear half of the 60 is already boxed, but when i get home and get the ranger going, i am going to box the rest of the frame as well.

oh and i forgot to say but there a re a few holes factory including one that is 2 inches round right in the middle of that area ...the 2 the guy before me made that would not work again... and the new ones we had to make to get the hitch where it should have sat the first time..right against the frame and not spaced by a few washers since the hitch sat on top of a rivet...so even if that sectione was boxed it would not have held up to much like that

well i got in my truck today and something seemed different, im not sure what so maybe you guys could help me out :D ....anywho got a vac guage for the truck and decided that since my truck does not have the fancy clock option i would stick the guage in there, to buy the clock is 90$ plus any wiring, i will get a pic of the finished look tomorrow once i figure out which vacuum line i need to tap into ><

Nice! Here comes the chrome! I can just see it happening...

The picture of the front frame rails is what I thought you were dealing with. see my suggestion in that post. do a bolt through with a plate and/or angle iron fro your bumper mounts. The winch plate, if you use one, can saddle between the frame rails using angle iron mounts that rest on either the top or bottom of the frame C channel and bolt through. Or box the ends and weld or bolt the angle to that for the winch and weld nuts to the inside plate for the bolts on the bumper mounts....

Hi Pete, I/we are working on the winch bumper mount, he just wanted to clean-up the front a little bit since it was apart. I have a peice of 3x3 x 1/4 angle I was going to lay in the frame with one flat side up and the otherflat side to the sides. bolt it in at the rear by the crossmember under the engine, and bolt in where original bumper bolted on and weld anything that touches. we would then set the bumper, I bought from Robert (monsterburban) that you saw last time I was at your house, on top of the flat 3in side and bolt that to the holes in the bumper winch plate. We layed it all out and took pictures , but , Robert ( my son ) has not put them on the CPU yet, so i could not include pics to show. Fordboy77 was here last sunday and he saw the mock up , and 4Runninfun was here today returning my pintal hitch he borrowed and saw the project. I hope to have it all done for the clean-up run Robert is leading on June 18th to Barbour fork. I will be there also cleaning up. Hope to see you there!:jiggy:

Hey Pete, sorry the welds are not as pretty as yours , I am trying, but I also double beaded them . I also had to lengthen the main winch box ( if you were wondering) because the Hummer winch is almost 2 inches longer, front to back then any winch I have ever made a bumber set - up for. It will be on and working for the trail clean-up run, I was hopeing to see you there. If not I will try and stop by your house that day and pick up my supercharger pulley if you will be around? Yes I wanted to mount the tow hooks different, I have two more different sets here Robert can choose from , one set is extra heavy duty and one set standard issue generic point type hooks. decided to take the top off for the summer and i only have one thing to say....mmmmmmm summer time cars...... it looks really really short in person and of course it rained later tonight since i took the top off but hey i was able to park it in the neighbors garage for the night :thumb: then the mustang now has a third top :) and then my dad found something amazing in an aluminum scrap pile.....black rim is my current spare (8 inch wide) and the other one he found in the scrap pile and its a twin to my 4 main rims (10 inch wide) :woot::2thumbup:

okay have some mods of the day type of things...........my dad went to the junkyard for things for his mustang and wandered through the chevys for parts and he found some cool things :) .....i also got the new fire extinguisher mounted (in a stock bolt hole!!)that my dad got after taking in the old ones that probably wouldnt work....:)

oh on another note someone said to check the motor mounts and the passenger side one was pretty busted...the pic is of the passenger header that had sagged enough for long enough to wear a groove into the frame and now this is where it is supposed to sit :thumb:

decided to find out what my intermidant squeek in my brakes was and my back brakes are still good (less than about 5-7 K on them) but my front brakes which i did not replace my self yet had enough pad left but they were heat cracked and had chunks missing out of the sides from age on an off road truck.....so got new ones of those and now that just about every steering piece has been replaced but i still had a little bit of unknown wander noticed that the tire would move when pulled on top and bottom when in the air (method to check ball joints) but my ball joints were good so my dad said it must be in the hub then .....so take that apart and find that the inner hub nut which is supposed to be about 50 foot pounds and mine was at -10 foot pounds :) so now it drives atraighter and doesnt pull weirdly when brakeing cause of that loose nut....... now its time to spend money on upgrades!!!!:cool:

Very nice, you can do the shackle flip without purchasing a kit, just some mild fab, that you are more than capable of if you want to save some bucks.

You can use the stock ones, flip them, then just add some bracing with some scrap steel. Where people get into problems or have issues doing the shackle flip is when they simply butcher the stock shackles, flip them and then don't add any additional support. This mod has been done a few times on this forum (with non braced stock shackles), but so far the non braced stuff has held up. Only a matter of time before it blows out, though....

I have a couple of huge rear shackle mounts off of a newer GMC dualie that I salvaged from some other junk. I was going to scrap them out, but I'll hang onto them if you want them. Should've sent them back with your dad when he stopped by, but didn't think of it.

okay well bought my first BRAND NEW part that was over 15 dollars and minus the fact my trailer hitch got in the way and my driver side frame isnt quite 100% square anymore but they fit quite nicely and were basically "bolt on" .........removed my 2 1/2 inch lift blocks and this also gave my pinoin a slight upward angle to help my driveshaft angle :) not much but it helps

okay it is starting!!!!!! the 10 bolt is now out (anyone want a set of 10 bolts?? :)) the big iron is now in the truck ....i may have lost ground clearance but i have strength now :) plus i have regeared from 3.42 gears to 4.10 so it wont be such an underdog now. i have installed a 14 bolt full float rear axle allll the way from a 1977 chevy truck.....only thing i need to do are buy a conversion u joint to fit it to my driveshaft and find the older stlye emergency cable brackets since this one is split in the middle and the 10 bolt runs 2 different lengths for left and right but that is it ....everything else bolted right on!!! ..though i still need to find rims and tires since these are wayyyy too narrow but were cheap tires to run for now

Lookin' good Robert! Got a 60 front to match the rear???? Just FYI, if you convert to rear discs you can lose up to 70 pounds. Ruff Stuff makes the cheapest brackets I've found so far. Get a set of '76 Eldorado calipers from Sviegels use auto parts or Arapahoe Auto Salvage since they come with the e-brake brackets and arms.

I have located a possible bell housing and 241C (heavy duty chevy 1 ton) 2:70 to 1"T"case for Robert, with NOW 4:10 axles and a 6:32 to 1 ,1st gear in the NV4500 we are hope he will be at 69.9642 to 1 in low range. not to bad for a single "T" case and rated to handle 400 HP for when he finally puts in the new engine!

well did some trimming and more removal so its quite spacious under my truck now :)

some of you may know my clutch had some problems and i thought it was low on material .....though no matter what i did it always held on and never slipped or anything like that and always moved the truck forward like normal..........for one the pressure plate is collapsing so it would not let go all the way ever......also the clutch is not exactly low on material its missing material :eek:..........and you can see the damage it did to the flywheel also ........on a side note i did some triming with the saw :)

sooooooo... on its maiden voyage with the hundreds upon hundreds of parts that have been removed and replaced and changed and custom built and custom fit NONE of those things (everypiecs of running gear minus the engine block) had any problem i know of:cool: ......the hood does not open now though and sits a little off centered so i think i tweaked the body but hopefully thats and easy fix once i get it open.......i did have to bail on the trip though because something did fail... this part os very easy to take off and if i can find the part (no one makes it any more) then will be a very fast and easy fix but it is devastating when wheeling :eek: i didnt get a pic of where the patch had to be put but it was DIRECTLY above the bellhousing between it and the floor about an inch behind the engine block.....very tight and hard to get to...... but here it is!! srry pics little blurry camera couldnt focus on it because the texture ...also i really really really need to majorly trim my front fenders.
