View Full Version : Pathrat's New FJC Front Bumper

I just did a much wanted front bumper for Stephanie's FJC. She had been wanting to do this for almost as long as I have known her, which has been a few years. Sean and I did a rear bumper for her last year, now she has a front one....and with some much improved approach angles! She has some lights that she got from Sean, so these are probably going to go in soon, too, and a grill guard/light guard is not too far down the road either. Now all she needs is a winch and fairlead!

The bumper itself is actually very light, but stout and is mounted separately from the winch plate. When the winch is installed, you would have to remove the whole bumper to remove the winch, making that a nice anti-theft feature. I used the Mile Marker universal winch plate, which Sean and I have used on quite a few bumpers, including Matt's and Adrians.

Looks great Pete, remind me not to have Stephanie behind me on a run!

What's the weight?

Brody

Thanks! The weight of the bumper is around 65-70 pounds, easily lifted by one hand. It may actually be a bit less, but that is what it feels like.

Cool! Are you around the house today or punching the time clock?

Brody

I'll be around here for the most part. I have plugs to put into the Escort and an oil change to do on my heap. We are going to look at a possible property on Sloan's Lake for a fix and flip, but that is flexible and won't be until after 1:00.

That thing is sick. It never ceases to amaze me what you guys can do.
That reminds me of a FJC I see outside my dorm at CU almost every day. I'll try to take pics next time im around it.

Awesome bumper Pete!!
Makes me feel all that much better you are working on my rig.

Thanks, Brad!

Everything I work on or build, I treat as though it is going to go on my own rig. Sean does the same thing. Probably why we aren't swimming in money, but we both like seeing people happy.

This bumper came out pretty sweet, and it does not weigh a bunch but is very strong, the height in the pics makes it look really tall but it is not that tall at all basically just enough to cover and protect most winches.

Yes, I am the new and supercool this week! Thanks everyone for the comments. I had wanted to get pictures up, but it was too dark last night and too dark this morning...and my camera sucks. THANKS TO PETE and Sean for his thoughts on this design. It looks great! I will have pictures up when it is bright enough to take some that show all the details and the tapered outer steel. I LOVE IT!!!

No, Chris, you belong behind me, where my OTHER big heavy steel is.

Sweet! Will the lights mount in the holes? Does the plate mount to the frame horns?

The only thing I'm not crazy about is the paint. I think you should throw a coat of Hammered on there!

The only thing I'm not crazy about is the paint. I think you should throw a coat of Hammered on there!

The holes are designed around the larger Lite force style lights. If the lights that Stephanie has or will get won't work well, I can fill the holes and relocate the light holes to the wing sides without too much problem. The lights should be able to mount on either the top or bottom of the bumper.

The winch plate is mounted separately to the frame horns from the bumper. The bumper then is mounted to them, making the bumper and winch modular items. This will both allow the winch to be mounted with the bumper off, then secured for anti theft when the bumper is reinstalled. You can also leave the winch and plate attached as a unit and remove it all in one piece, but why someone would want to do that is beyond me. As it is, the bumper, though plenty strong, doesn't weigh too much by itself, so it is easy to handle.

The paint matched the satin on the rear bumper we did for Stephanie last year...

Hey brody, saw your ad on Craiglist. Nice bumper.

Thanks Joe! Had to run the ad that way so that the ad didn't get deleted as a business posting, which I don't have the $$ to pay for. I bet Stephanie doesn't know her bumper is for sale....:D

Actually, hers was a prototype and now we have all the correct measurements for the steel and bending, so if you run into someone who wants one.....

Saw you on the road about a week ago, but I can't remember where. I was going to honk and wave, but realized that you would have no idea who it was as i was driving the Jeep Cherokee..

I will keep you in mind if someone is looking for a bumper. Or anything else that they need built.

Here are some more pictures:

Hey, my rig is a rolling ad...like I told Brody it should be! Maybe add another shot of the tapered corners, if that is going to be a standard feature.

I am waiting to put this new piece of gear up on the Blue Room until Pete puts in a plate to protect the lower radiator.

As far as paint goes...I love me a warm day and a few cans of rattle. I think I am going to go over the plastic body panels in the new matte bumper (and I mean stock plastic crap I don't have anymore) paint, and going over the rear with some Rustoleum Matte Black automotive paint. Yes, I did go to the auto parts store today and bought paint. :)

So Brody welded me up a plate for protecting the lower part of the radiator and fabbed a bolt-on grill that protects the front while allowing for sufficient airflow. He welded the radiator plate flush with my existing aftermarket skid plate for a seamless piece of steel armor. Pretty slick I think.
