Has anyone ever lived in either state?
If so what areas would you recommend living?
I am asking because we are looking at possibly moving down that way after my folks pass on and maybe when I retire which ever comes first. I want to go to a slower pace of life then all the craziness that Denver has grown to be.
I do not want to move to the far southern states cause I dont want to deal with some of the critters that are in those states (I hate snakes and gators).

I lived in Knoxville in '78 and thought it was a decent town. You have the Smokies just to the east. It gets colder in the winter, but it rarely snows. You can get to the DC area in about 9 hours via 81 and 95 and you're not terribly far from the ocean. And the Rocky Hill Cafe has the best biscuits and gravy anywhere.
All I know about Kentucky is what I saw driving through it on occasion. Pretty state.

Need to talk to Reese aka Roo on this one! He has either lived or has family in both I believe.

Jock is right, I grew up in Western KY near Paducah. It's a nice area and if layed back is what you want they have it there. KY Lake and Barkely Lakes are really nice in the summer and awesome crappie fishing in the late winter early springtime plus great bass fishing year around and there is a little wheeling at LBL (Land between the Lakes) Turkey Bay. Never wheeled there myself but I have ridden 4 wheelers there as a kid. You are a little under 2.5 to Nashville from there and 3 to Memphis, Tn. and around 3 to St. Louis I believe.
I lived in Memphis, Tn for 12 years and you couldn't pay me to go back....well maybe but it would have to be millions. If you are thinking about TN I would have to recommend Nashville or anything east of there. Chattanooga is nice and in the mountains right on the border of Georgia and North Carolina. Let me know if you have any questions. I have family in Nashville, Memphis, and Western KY still so if I don't know it I can ask somebody for you.

Well, the way I feel about anything south of the Mason Dixon Line, I am more with Roo: it would take an awful lot of money for me to even think about living anywhere in what is considered the south again.

I just meant Memphis, Brody not the entire south. Just to clarify.

And me, I mean the entire south....I grew up down there, and have spent quite a bit of time roaming around down in the southern states, including Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, etc. It could all sink into the Gulf, along with all of the archiac thinking, rebel flags, bugs, etc....oh...and tourist attractions like DisneyBones, too...And yes, I realize that I am pretty biased...

My sister went to school in Nashville and really enjoyed it! I visited a few times, definitely not my style at all.
My family is from London, KY (near Lexington) and it's a nice area, but not my style.
Folks seem to be nice in both places. I remember Nashville as being pretty segregated though.

Thanks for the input so far, we figure that a mountainy area would suite us best (or at least I do) I grew up here (Colorado), Val (Cali) and I just can't take anymore of the rude people (drivers) and find that it is getting harder for me to keep from letting someone hit my car, or truck or pissing me off to where I ram them, not to mention going to the grocery store and how rude folks are in there too. Just way too many folks for my liking anymore. I do love this state but it is getting way outta control with all the BS(taxes, fees & so forth)not to mention cost of living going way up. I guess overall I have always thought that if my nearest neighbor lived 5 miles away or more it would be great, but who can afford land here that can offer that unless you live way out east in BFE.
Anyway this is looking for sometime down the road like next 5-10 years, but there is always the chance it could happen sooner.

Drivers here are way better than Memphis. In Memphis they don't use turn signals and everyone tailgates. If you have to merge into bumper to bumper traffic it is always going to take about 20 cars before anyone lets you in. My experience here with drivers in these past 2 years has been great so far.....maybe they just like the blue FJ?

Regardless of which state you move to, you will need to deal with lots of hillbillys, Klan members and country music. However, I like both Nashville and Memphis. Stay near the city for good jobs and amenities.

Personally, I think CO drivers are the worst on the planet. A close second would be a South Korean cab driver after a liter of soju. It must be the FJ!

That be the point I was making, too....not a high recommendation for any state or nation....But, I gotta say, listen to enough country and hillbilly music and it does get the old "gotta burn a damn cross" feeling jest a cooking in the brain pan...:D
I could care less for the south, obviously. When I was growing up, there was no segregation and instead, black and white restrooms, "no N(word)" signs outside bars and restaurants, etc. Rather pathetic, all told and didn't make me feel to damn proud to be a white person...

Geez, Jeff, I just looked at that picture and my IQ dropped about 60 points....
Gotta say that Ky is a pretty state, at least what I saw of it.....and remember. Last time I was there I saw Blue Oyster Cult. Dates me a bit, I know, but I went there to visit a buddy and his wife. It was kinda funny as BOC came out on stage all bad ass black leather and shades and the local group that proceeded them came out in torn jeans and flannel shirts. The local group tore them up.....

Well at any rate my 1st choice was to move to Montana around Missoula or Helena but Val said NO WAY it gets too cold and way too much snow. Really like the stuff I have seen of the mountains down that way like the Blue Ridge Mountains. I liked the southern parts of Virginia, when I was there I did not get to far away from DC which Has way too many people and Too much crime. Would not mind checking out the Appalachian Mountain range. Heck I already have the hillbilly hat (seriously), shoot I could get started making some shine in between welding and wheeling. I am not worried about things like the KKK, especially since we are living in the state that it was headquartered out of already. Those things do not bother me it is just all the bs like neighbors ragging cause you are doing something in your yard or garage (which has not happened at this house yet) but the city sure likes to keep a close eye on everything we do. Mostly it is I am totally fed up with folks not paying attention while they are driving (texting, phone calls, makeup) and almost taking out my vehicles because of their stupidity and folks acting like they are the ones that are important in this world. I just need to be in a mountain area to be happy or a smaller town with a hell of a lot less people.
Reese when I or Val do come up with some questions I will definitely hit you up and thanks in advance.
