picked this up today. this is all the pics I took as it was getting dark and cold by the time we got out of there. Anyways... this thing is HUGE!! its the same engine I have now, and I was mostly pulling it for the transmission, but figured I would take the engine too. It will be in the garage till I decide what I want to do with it. Anyways, just wanted to throw up a few pics. I think Josh has better ones. It took us about 3 to 3.5 hours of actual work time. Huge thanks to Josh for his help, Bryan for his engine hoist, and Brad for his tranny jack!!!

rebuild the engine, then swap it in! good find!

yea, that will probably happen in the long term. Looks like its not going to be cheap to rebuild it, so I wil probably try to do it over time, and in the mean time I at least have it sitting in the garage in case mine craps out. Did I mention the engine only cost me $100? tranny was another $175, tcase was free! Tranny was also pretty recently professionally rebuilt.

gee....thanks for the flattering ass crack picture there buddy :p

Got a few more. I was actually surprised how easily this thing came out. These old carbed engines don't have much going between them and the body. Sure is a big ole heavy engine though. A few more pictures for people....

woo that engine looks huge floating in the air like that

thats what I thought too. Seems smaller inside the rig.

I pulled the transmission off the engine today and was pleased to see that it was in fact rebuilt as promised. Had a shiny new torque convertor inside, and it looked nice and clean in the bell housing. There is also clearly a new gasket at the tail housing... and in order to change that gasket you have to dissassmble all of the guts inside to get back there... so I am feeling pretty confident in this transmission now!

Is that a 345 or 304? I thought the 304 came with the Commanche air cleaner box, but of course things get swapped around.

A Top Gear style engine coffee table also comes to mind...but only if its a dead and unusable engine.

Its the 345. There is just a sticker on the air box is all. Its also different heads than what was originally on there, so who knows how the parts have been switched around. Its going to need gone through for sure before I try to run it.

Chris - I do own more engines that I do vehicles... but at least all but this one are still in a vehicle!!

Josh - That is a serious consideration for whatever engine is sitting in the garage when this is all done. Assuming its not resellable.

That same ebay store seller sells a hipo kit for the 345 as well.

What happened to the B-II?

I don't feel so bad now. One of my buddies was giving me crap about my collection of FEs. I started a thread at FTE called "The 48-cylinder project." I'm down to 40 cylinders of FE power, but now have 32 cylinders of Moo-Parts. :)

It is a sickness, and moving is going to suck.

thats the only reason I hesitated buying this engine. I intend to move sometime this spring, and its already going to suck. Hell, just moving all 5 vehicles is going to take a few trips!

You'll have to give me a good price on the 2F when you pull it out of the 60. I need to get started on my engine collection. :D

I have a set of bad, rusty heads you can have. You can set them in your garage, driveway... front yard maybe? Then people will think your a real gear head. If you really motivated I will even throw in a pile of transmission parts and an empty housing!!

:lmao:

Considering my neighbor, that wouldn't happen until I have a vehicle jacked up in the drive (or front yard) and mostly disassembled.

Hmm, I do have a strip of back yard between the garden and the fence that's not being used. :D

Forget the 6 banger Yota, Rob, and just stick a 327 Chevy in that thing so that you have a little power. You probably have as much power as you are going to get with that engine whether you rebuild a new one or not.

I'm not a complete 40 purist, but I do want to keep the 2F engine. I don't think I need more power, just lower gearing. And bigger tires. :thumb:

safety frist ! heres a tip. take some of the air outa your tires so you dont have to lift that power house to high. helps me hopes it help all a you!

scout man
November 25th, 2010, 12:04 PM
yea, this rig didnt have any air in the tires to begin with! its a tall angine though, and scouts have a front cross member you haved to clear with a really deep oil pan.

Take some scrap metal and make a dolly. I think wheels are the most expensive part.

crossed my mind. I think I am going to go ahead and buy an engine stand for it. They are only like $109 at harbor freight for the 2000 lbs one that I need. Transmission is already seperated from the engine and will probably be going in next week sometime.

actually no. oil pan scraped on the way out, and the transmission took me lifting on it very hard to get enough height. We did finally manage to roll the scout out from under it, as we were on a hill, and pulling the enigne uphill on a very rough driveway was not happening well.

Craigslist FTW!!! I lucked on this one for $20:

scout man
November 25th, 2010, 03:03 PM
yea, unfortunately I need one with the U shaped support legs, as this engine is really heavy and they say that you need the 2000 lbs weight capacity to be able to work on it and keep it stable.

I hear ya there! I found this on CL, I'd offer $50 at the most: http://denver.craigslist.org/tls/2075461381.html

Then I looked through the HF flyer I got at the store this week. There is a paper coupon for this stand: http://www.harborfreight.com/2000-lb-foldable-engine-stand-67015.html

Coupon price is $79.99, valid 12-9 through 12/13. It's in the "Stocking Stuffer" flyer. http://www.harborfreight.com/retail-flyer

Go gettem Steve!!! :)

idk what your 345 weighs but when i put my 460 on the harbor freight stand it started to bend and i had to weld gussets and weld the adjustable arms for the engine. IMO the HF engine stands suck. just a heads up. And this was a 2000# one.

scout man
November 25th, 2010, 11:38 PM
interesting. I had heard good things about the HF one. Engine weighs 750 pounds, give or take.
