So I have been looking at this stock Toyota tow hook from the front (back?) of someone's Yota I worked on....maybe Stephanie's FJC..where we did a new bumper. It was just in my 'don't know what I'll use this for, but too good to throw away' junk. I have been meaning to get one of those receiver hitch tow points for the back of my rig if for nothing else than to attach my rear winch hook to.

Since I also had some 1/4" 2x2 stock kicking around, I decided to make one using this Yota hook. I set it on the edge of the 2x2 and cut away two corners just enough for the bars of the hook to allow the bolt on plate to rest flat against the 2x2. I then welded the hook and plate all the way around, rosette welded the bolt holes, and welded the insides of the bar stock to the insides of the 2x2. I then caped the end, which also tied the hook into the 2x2 at another point. Having fried my 9/16" drill bit and rather than go buy another(this was a 'fast' project...and cheap) I used the plasma to burn some 9/16" holes for the pin.

Now I have a rear tow point and winch hook attachment point. Took about 30 minutes including paint. Got a welder and some scrap 2x2? These hooks are all over the junkyards and they will probably give you one. This was a real fast way to get one. Looks good, too.

Also, most of the big 1/2 and 3/4 ton Dodge and GM trucks have very beefy tow hooks. These are found all over the junkyards and you can get a set of them for around $10.
