Hey everyone,
I am going to be attended a week long training program in Vegas at the end of this month. I'm not much of a gambler, so i was wondering if there are any things worth checking out while i am there. The lucky part about this is i turn 21 the Monday before i leave! I heard they have a cool Harley restaurant there, but thats about all i have planned for my visit so far. Any suggestions?
Thanks
Chris

A few things...

Walk the strip. See the Hoover Dam and take the tour (plan it in advance; they're more strict now after 9/11). Pick a show and see one even if that's not your thing. Loosen your belt and hit the buffets.

Have a good trip.

Thanks for that link Warrlord! i will be checking that out for sure! I have been fortunate enough that i have seen the inner workers at Hoover dam, but thats only because of connections and relations to my job.
Thanks for all the links and such!

I'm from Vegas and I might be somewhat helpful...maybe. Lake Mead is pretty fun, both Marina's have decent restaurant's as well as Echo tourist rides to the dam. They offer scuba classes at an under water boat yard they sunk a lot of boats for. State line Nevada/Cali has what used to be the worlds fastest roller coaster. If you'll bring kids or are simply a kid at heart, the Circus Circus has an AWESOMELY HUGE game room with everything you can think of. The stratosphere is a good one. Any of the restaurants on the strip are great for star dining as well as a lot of clubs if your into that. Check the calenders if your into music or shows as theres always a national act there musical or otherwise. The Fremont Street experience is pretty cool to see at least once. Lots of good tattoo shops if your into them. Strip clubs galore. There are usually some small time mainstream boxing and MMA fights going on. The auto museum at The Wynn is pretty cool. Pirate show at T.I.

Wow, the Stratosphere has added some ride since I used to go there on business a few years ago.

The Big Shot was there, though, and it'll get your heart pumping. If you can get it out of your throat, that is.

My biggest recommendation is to bring a buddy or do a good job of making friends at the conference. Las Vegas is a REALLY lonely place when you are by yourself and can't manage that stuff like I did.

Seeing a Cirque show is usually worth it, despite it being a bit spendy. I hear that the Phantom show is pretty crazy, and if they have the Spider Man show setup there then that would be one to hit too. I've always wanted to see Penn and Teller too. I saw KA last time I was there and its VERY cool, and I had an interview with the O show and they let me sit in the booth during the show and it was pretty damn cool as well.

Honestly, doing the "free" Vegas Strip tour is worth doing at least one night. I can watch the Bellagio Fountains for about 4-5 cycles before I get bored (3 minute "shows" about 10 minutes apart) and the Treasure Island "Pirates with Boobies" show is worth watching once. I think they have the Volcano thing going too at Ceasars now. Its always fun to walk through the casino's and do some people watching. Just wear nice shoes, because walking 4 blocks is more like walking 10 due to how the pedestrian system is designed there.

If you can afford it, there is some seriously good restaurants there. My dad and step mom go there a couple times a year just to go to the awesome restaurants. Its no fun by yourself though, which is why I never really did much of that stuff. I could see how the Strip could be a ton of fun with a group of friends, but its pretty damn boring and expensive for a shy single guy that refuses to "pay for company" :p.

Jumping off the Stratosphere looks kinda fun, but pretty slow. The Big Shot is probably fun if you have never been up high like that before, but you are so strapped in, it is safer than driving a car.

I am not a big fan of Vegas, so cannot contribute. Been through there, Reno and Tahoe a lot coming and going from the west coast, didn't like much of anything. Climbing at Red Rocks was good, ditto with climbing around South Lake Tahoe, but that's it...

Having been to Vegas ten times 5 of which for sema, I have learned to park at the casino I want to visit and run in and out. For first timers I recommend hiking the strip, get a cheap drink and check out the free shows. Start at ti (treasure island) and work your way down to the Luxor. I have been to zoomanity by cirque du soleil, it is considered a more erotic show but no nudity, I really liked it. There is Madame tsao's wax museum at the Venetian, the canal shops are worth walking through, great street performers. Belagio has a big display in the center of their shops always worth checking out. MGM has a lion exhibit. Mandalay bay has shark reef aquarium. Search individual casinos for their non gambling exhibits. You could stay busy with little or no money for quite some time.

Thanks for all of the suggestions so far everyone! I think i'll probably hit the strip one night, and then check out the museums and ride a few of the rides. I'll probably end up doing it alone, as most the people i work with are well into the 30s or 40's and from some reason dont like hanging out with me( i turn 21 a week before i go so maybe that'll change.). Good news is my room and board is free, so i can at least save some $$$ there to go and see some of the cool stuff while i am there!

Primm right? I think thats what the town was called. That roller coaster was a blast me and my dad rode it atleast a good hour and a half.

X2 on the rides! I think it's fun to just walk the strip and see the different resort hotels. If you get a chance to get over to the Fremont district, they have a really cool light show at night (free). A Cirque show is a must if you can afford it. Red rocks is also a nice place to go hiking for a while. All suggestions so far are really great... but I agree that being alone out there is not fun. You get that "I'm not in Kansas any more" feeling real fast! I know you mentioned you're turning 21, but keep your wits about you... There are some real shady folks out there and you need to be aware of your surroundings at all times (at least in my experiences). Have fun though! If you've never been there, you'll have fun just "watching"!

Hey Ed, you know you can use the quote button right? Its the little text bubble with the quote next to the "reply" button. Not tryin to bust your chops, just noticed you were having a bit of trouble. Sounds like you've taken Vegas to the limits though, good on ya. :thumb:

HEHE....sounds like my 21st B Day party. I was told that I had a really good time and only ended up one state away with two women that I had never seen before in bed with me in some motel room...That was two days after my B day....."and it musta been a real good time..." Anyway, by the time I got back home, driving a car I also never seen before (left that about a mile from the house after wiping it down), I found out that the job I had was no longer there and neither was the lady that I had been dating at the time....(Oooops)

Never ever take anything your friends stick under your nose ( as in "Here, happy birthday! Take these! Smoke this!"...last thing I remember..) right after you wake up, especially if it is your birthday...and even if they are good friends...Well....live and learn and stranger things HAVE happened in Vegas....

Anyway, younger folks are sooooo much better behaved and serious now, a big difference than when I was misspending my youth, so you probably have nothing to worry about..

Um .... MUSTANG RANCH!!! :)
Seriously though, check out some of the dance clubs. If you are just turning 21, this could be considered a right of passage. Drag one of the old fart co-workers with you.

Have fun Chris, just keep in mind the town has perfected seperating a man from his money. ;)
