This will be the thread for what trails we will run in Moab.
Let me know what trails you want to run, and I will add them to the list, then we can decide what days to run what.

Probably a good idea to start with some mild trails to get everyone accustom to slickrock. Fins & Things is a great trail to get your feet wet.

I am at the mercy of those who are Moab veterans. I do know I dont want to do crazy stuff like Haku and Foxtrot will most likely want to do.

I am good with doing some easy trails too, Like Josh said, maybe we can work it where the days that other people want to go hiking and sight seeing, we can go on the harder trails. What days is everyone wanting to go sight seeing? that way I can put that in the schedule also, so we can plan on what days to do the harder trails
Brad

My vote is to leave sightseeing to Mon, Teus as the weekend crowd will be gone and might make that less crowded. Aaron and the others need to chime in as well.

I would say that Fins n Things followed by Hells Revenge would be a good first day. I know some people see Hells Revenge as something they don't want to do, but its no harder then Fins n Things, it just has bigger hills and some harder very optional obstacles on it. Beyond that, the one I would really like to do is the Poison Spider Trio. It will be a long day, but its a doable trail for everyone. There is the Golden Crack, but people feel like they are getting too unstable then I've heard people who have put a tire in the crack to drive over.
I also plan on doing stuff around Area BFE, but that is stuff you can do before or after other trails. I'd like to do Greenday, which is a bit advanced but doable for most since there is a class 2 trail that goes up along side it. I might poke into Helldorado or one of the other trails there too, but that is definitely harder stuff and would be pushing it for me. There are some easy trails there too, and since we'll be camping right there its a fun place to explore.
I'd be down for easy, scenic, and off the beaten path stuff for a day too. I'm really down for whatever as long as there is a bit of challenge or something to go see at the end as long as its not just a washboard road for 8 hours.
Just across the highway from BFE is Behind the Rocks, which is a hard trail, but if the pictures on Traildamage are indicative then it can be done with a moderately built rig (i.e. small lift and a bump up in tire size) but they rate it a 7 or 8 depending on what line you take. For something easier, Flat Iron Mesa looks like fun. Its rated a 5 with a few bypassable level 7 obstacles. I say these because they are nearby to where we are camping. I could keep recommending stuff, but it would probably be better to just go to the "Utah area Trailhead Map" on Traildamage and have a look yourself. Lots of stuff within 20-45 minutes from camp/town.

lol if we do, we should make the last day. I hear there is a lot of breakage on that trail :)
Haku
February 14th, 2011, 11:19 PM
Yeah....I think that is because the crux obstacles are "line it up and gun it" kind of obstacles. I think its fine though as long as you resist the urge to gun it. Never ran it, but it looks fun.

Looks like this thread just kind of stopped. Now that we'll be there for sure I'll give it a kick. The obvious that hasn't been mentioned is the group going as of today is that there's distinct break in rigs going. Haku & Foxtrot and similar builds will want to different stuff than those of us with lesser built trucks. Last year We did pretty easy trails but think they may be rated moderate - Fins & Things, Top of the World which I tend to do every visit. I plan on Chicken Corners scenic drive and such as well. Maybe a Marty led "off the traditional trails" run or whatever. I think Elephant Hill (long day) would be fun too. I don't want to overplan because that's no fun but it would be a good idea to get some ideas flowing.

I am up for anything and everything. Will probably run some of the hard stuff with Josh and Brad, but the other stuff is still fun to me too. I am guessing at least one or two days people will split up a bit, but I think everyone enjoys some of the easier stuff too, since we will be there for a while anyways.
Haku
February 20th, 2011, 11:22 PM
I'm fine with doing some more moderate stuff, I just want to have a few challenging trails to run. I don't need to be thrashing it the whole time and breaking things. I just don't want to be on class 2-3 stuff all week. If we can keep it in the 4-5 range, I'm sure Brad and I can entertain ourselves on harder stuff for a day or two.

Yeah, kinda of what we do on long climbing trips, too. Not many people are wired for doing hard and demanding stuff day to day. We would climb very hard stuff for 2-4 days, take a 'sort of' rest day and do a long scenic climb....

On Pritchett you need to have a good cage and body armor or you will have body damage since you have to lean against the rocks to get through some of the narrow points. You also need to have a good winch as each vehicle will have to winch out at the end of the trail unless you plan to run it backwards to get out. It gets pretty tippy running it backwards. If you exit Pritchetts you can continue on to Behind the Rocks and run it backwards to get out. You do have to be capable of climbing White Knuckle Hill or you have to take the bypass and the county road back to 191.

I don't remember needing a winch to get out of pritchet. We got 6 rigs through it without a winch pull. The dirt road sucks driving on the way out. It's 13 miles of he'll.

February 22nd, 2011, 10:20 AM
I suppose it's possible, but none of the buggys in our group could climb out at the end without a little winch help. Plus, there is a huge and deep hole right next to you on the left side. If you spin your tires and slide left even a little you are toast. If you go off in to that hole it looks like you would need a crane to get the rig out of it.

Randy, are you talking about Yellow Hill....
Hard Line on the Right...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqfATBbKurs
Easier Line on the Left
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIp9UH0OAYs
Seems like the left line is fine, and all the trail guides say that Yellow Hill is the last part of Pritchett. I can see how you would want to be built for this though, or just willing to have some body damage. There are enough obstacles with rollover potential that a cage would be really good to have too.

I'd vote Fins and TOTW (since I haven't done it) and a Marty led best of the unknown moab trail on another day. I'll probably be wheeling two of the 4 days I'm there so that will fill it most likely.
Haku
February 22nd, 2011, 02:34 PM
I'm down for those. Fins is fun and TOTW has some decent parts and you can't beat the view from up there. I vote for a Sunset trip for that one. Only downside is its pretty far from the campsite. So far so good.
A few others I'd like to maybe consider are Metal Masher, Moab Rim, Cliffhanger and I'm sure there are others. I'll make a plea to realize that just because it has a scary name, doesn't necessarily mean anything in Moab. Hells Revenge is rated the same as Fins n Things for instance ( I know....:horse:). The hills may be bigger and the optional obstacles (that you have to drive out of your way to go on) are fairly stout, but its no harder then Fins. I think this is true for many of the trails too.

As for days, starting with a couple of shorter easy trails is good. Otherwise, its really down to what days people want to split off and do non wheeling things, and seeing what days Marty is available or not for the scenic "off the beaten path" trails. I'm down with whatever really, even if that means deciding what we are going to do on a daily basis around the campfire.

I'm down for Elephant Hill too. I don't need to be thrashing it every day, especially considering I'm pretty much planning on being in Moab for almost 2 weeks straight and will get a bunch of the thrashing done before you guys get there. You're going to want to run more than just fins n things on one day. Same with hells revenge and moab rim. Double them up so you can get more in for your money. Just my opinion though.
Haku
February 25th, 2011, 02:44 AM
Agreed. Todd and I did both Fins n Things and Hells Revenge in 5 hours or so last year. The year before that, we took all day to do Hells Revenge, but we did a lot of spectating at the big obstacles and got a late start since it was a very rainy in the morning so we didn't get started till after noon.
No rush on stuff, but those are definitely half day trails or even less.

Winching on that one is fine, and I agree that it would hurt to have a strap on the front. Really should have a cage for this one too. We will be camping a couple hundred yards from this obstacle, so at the very least we'll get to see a few people try it.

So, what do you guys know about Shafer Trail in Canyonlands? Is it one that is ok to do alone? TD calls it a 2/3.
As we've said, we don't plan on wheeling everyday and Sunday is a day that we were planning on going to Canyonlands for some hiking but if we can get there via a relatively easy road less traveled, That would be great. If anyone is interested in going with us that way, you are welcome to.
[Edited - I meant Sunday]
Aaron
March 8th, 2011, 10:54 AM
I think we're going to do it. Sunday plan for us will be to start early and head down Potash Road (paved) by the petroglyph cliff facings and take Shafer Trail along the Colorado (under Dead Horse Point) into Canyonlands. We will do a hike or two in the Island in the Sky area and head back north later that day. It would be really nice if it is timed right to go to Dead Horse Point ont he way back for Sunset because it is beautiful. I haven't done it in 10 years but it is still one of the most beautiful places I've ever been.
I am cool with anyone who wants to do the Schafer part of the trail together. We may want to split up after the trail though since we will be spending most of the day in the park. Up to you though. We don't mind company.

I am open to anything. I have biked and climbed all over Moab but never wheeled. I will only be there for a few days so wheeling is my main focus for this trip. I am thinking my rig can do a up to a 6 Trail Damage rating? Anything harder, I will need to ride shotgun with someone. Since a good size group is going out on Saturday, after we all set up camps, maybe a good sunset / dinner run would be cool to get the feel and maybe plan out the week?

You can get info / permit at Arches NP or go to the NPS building on Resource Blvd. (3 miles south of town) or the entrance station at Schafer Trail. I think you may also get it at the visitor center in town. IIRC, they issue 30 per day, so it shouldn't be a problem to get one. I'll try and stop by tomorrow at the NP Hdqts. and get info directly from them.

Sounds like a fun non wheeling day you guys have planned. I'll play it by ear on whether I go with you or go hiking. Since I plan on being there for so long, it might be nice to have a day off from wheeling but who knows.
I'm compiling data for GPS map tracking. I use a cool opensource GPS offroad navigation program called Oruxmaps that can run on most Android devices. It lets you create a map using a bunch of different sources including google and microsoft maps, Earth, etc, and the one I use most of the time, Terraserver (USGS Topomaps). You can get the .gpx files for most of the popular trails from either trail damage or everytrail.com.
I already have a map created, so I'm just looking to get a list from people of any trail your might want to do. This isn't a list of what we WILL do, but any that are potentials. Here are the ones I have so far....
Behind the Rocks, Elephant Hill, Fins n Things, Hells Revenge, Gold Bar Rim, Golden Spike, Poison Spider, Rusty Nail, Kane Creek, Metal Masher, Moab Rim, Pritchett Canyon, Steel Bender, Strike Ravine, Green Day, Helldorado, Minor Threat and Top of the World.
If there are any trails not in the above that you would like to maybe do, list them up and I'll download them. This should make navigation and trail finding much easier. Additionally, if you have an android phone and want the maps and .gpx stuff, I'll have my laptop with me and we can transfer them onto your phone or tablet then. I've used this software for trail navigation before, and its fairly reliable. I just consider it a tool though, and won't take it as gospel. It doesn't give turn by turn anyways, it just tells you where you are and plots it on a map.

Leaving the afternoon of the 14th. I'm in middle of the rear axle swap, and at the same time trying to get the Front put back together too. 3 link project is off the books till after the trip, but I might still put the wider axle under the rig with Leaf springs since that's much simpler. Just weld some spring perches on and bolt it up. I also want to get the basics of my flatbed done so I have some fender coverage. At some point I should probably do a jerry rigged mud flap system for the rear wheels too.
If I have time, I'll probably try and have the exhaust done so that I'm not huffing fumes for two weeks straight too. I don't need much, just a cat, a muffler and a short downward pointing tube.

I went to the NPS hdqts. today and got the info on WRT. As I stated previously, a day use permit is required until May 31. Haku, I found a buddy of mine from GJ to lead us through Heldorado on Wed the 23th if you're interested :)

Saturday the 19th :)
yeah....my bad on the typo. I think I was typing that on my tablet and its a bit finicky.
I'm down for Heldorado, or at least all but the end. I'm fine with winching up the waterfall or turning around going back out the way we came. Not a very long trail from what I hear.
So no other trails anyone wants to try? Guess I'm on my own with the planning.

Question about the schedule... Since most folk will not be there till later in the day Saturday, should we do Fins on Sunday? I like following the likes of Rob and Chris on these runs as I know they have no interest in using their non-existent exo cages :)...
If so, we could do Shafer on Saturday Brad...
Just a thought.

Top of the world is definitely not an all day trail. For that matter, I think fins and things is really only a half day trail. Personally I think it makes the most sense to do this day by day. Sit around the fire with those that are intending to wheel the next day and see what the consensus is.

Schafer on Sat does sound better! Good way to break in Moab for us! :thumb:

I'm completely cool with that with the exception of the first day where you guys won't be around the fire the night before...
Looks like consensus might be to do Fins Sunday (or at least sometime that is not Saturday). That means we can do Schafer on Saturday if you want to Brad.

It would probably be a good idea to have a plan for Sunday then decide on the rest of the days. Since I won't be sitting around any camp fire I'll go along with the groups decision.

I am good with whatever. Fins on Sunday is good, maybe with something else too? I hear it's a short run.
Is Schaffer something we can do after lunch on Saturday? I would like to do something on Saturday too after we set camp?
Then, just play it by ear.

Hey Kieth, Schaffer is something we are just doing because we want to spend a day in Canyonlands. I'm sort of a one trail a day kind of guy so maybe another group would want to do Schaffer again Sat afternoon or Sunday after Fins, I bet you could get some folks to go.

Thanks Aaron, that's cool. I am on my way to get a good map book of the jeep trails. I have plenty of biking and hiking books on Moab but not a 4x4 book. It will all be new to me in a jeep so I am really game for any trail. I forgot that you are going out on Friday and that leaves your Saturday open. I will see you there!

Hopefully you guys will have better luck with the weather than we are right now. It's been nasty windy since we got here late Saturday night. Its trying to rain as I speak. Hopefully tomorrow and Wednesday will be better.
Haku has some crappy luck when it comes to Moab. Martys house saw Hakus rig again. We were headed out to Behind the Rocks on sunday and his frenched rear spring hangers broke inside the frame. His frame is the shape of a V with the tool box resting against the back of the cab. Luckly it happened on the dirt road and not on I70 headed out. He found a local wheeler that is helping him weld it back together. Hopefully it will be ok. Behind the rocks was fun, white knuckle hill is crazy! We ran Moab Rim today. Nice and windy but still a good day on the trail. My bro-in-law and I were going to run Hells revenge but its nasty out.
Haku is working on his rig right now, hopefully it will repair ok and he'll be able to run the rest of the trip with you guys.

My stuff is back together and the weather has improved. A bit of rain tomorrow (Friday) but its supposed to be a bit better later in the week.
I'm down with whatever. I got invited to do Metal Masher Saturday, so I'll probably do that. Otherwise, I'm down for whatever. I got a weeks pass for Sand Flats (where Fins and Hells Revenge is) so I can do it whatever day people feel like. Todd and I did Fins n Things and Hells Revenge in like 5 hours last year. I expect it to take us longer then that with all the rigs that will be there and everyone's need for pictures and video and checking out the scenery. I think Top of the World will take some more time too.
Volcom and I did the Poison Spider Trio the other day, and I would say everyone on here would be able to do an "up and back" on Poison Spider, but Golden Spike would be seriously pushing it for a lot of rigs. Golden crack was a big ole yawn, but there are some big ledges and lots of tippy spots where lifting of wheels happens even with the flexy rigs.
Should be a good week.
