View Full Version : Ways to save some $$

I just switched our auto insurance yesterday to Progressive from Travelers and am going to save about $200 the first 6 month policy period. I have been in a pinch the past few years due to getting 3 tickets in 2007. Travelers checks your driving record for 5 years and Progressive for only 3 years so my rates dropped big time by switching. Just thought I would share in case anyone else is in the same situation.

Feel free to turn this into a money saving idea thread. I know it wouldn't kill any of us to save some $$.

Didn't you get nailed recently? I distinctly remember you telling me about getting pulled over some where, Boulder or Longmont?

Yep, so that still means I only have 1 on my record with Progressive instead of 4 with Travelers. I need to start riding a bicycle...except it is hard to carry two tool boxes and a labrador on a bike.

You can give me the lab then you don't have to worry about that! :D

That's cool, I have got one on my record from a couple years ago that increased our rate, I'll have to talk to Cindy about this.

Maybe that Scott fly rod isn't so far out of reach now! :thumb:

I like Progressive. Been with them a long time, have accident forgiveness now. Jackie hit a deer in the Camry a few months back and they fixed it no problem, and it was a no fault thing and the rates shouldn't change.

I switched from State Farm who let one of their other members commit medical insurance fraud against my account and made my rates skyrocket. And then they raised them more, while advertising that they were lowering them on the radio. State Farm will never get any of my money ever again.

They do you like the cable and wireless companies do, the promo only applies to those switching from other carriers. It's a bunch of BS!

I'll stick with Travelers myself, they've always taken good care of us and we have all our coverages with them. I hate finding out bad things about an insurer when it comes time to file a claim. I suppose that I'm more careful than Reese makes a difference too. :D

:lmao: Must be an old guy thing. I'd like to find a company that would give me a break from not having a ticket since 1982 or an accident since 1975.

I suppose I'd be remiss if I didn't mention I also favor the company because Barb spent 30 years with a company that was absorbed by them and that they provide our retiree medical coverage. :)

Yep Jock, $50 off for signing up online as a matter of fact. So that means if the rates stay the same then it will only be $150 cheaper the next 6 months.

I don't have a problem with Traveler's at all. In fact I think they were one of the only one's that would even write insurance on me when we first moved here. However, my rates continue to creep up every 6 months no matter what we do(tickets or not). I have done business with them through the windshield biz and they pay faster than anyone on claims (in fact they can usually have me a check within a week and most insurances companies that send me electronic payments take at least 2 weeks....go figure). It really is all about cutting the monthly bills back a little at this point.

Probably would help to not drive a bright blue smurf mobile too:lmao:

Yeah well you're closing on the other end of the spectrum, the people who fall asleep behind the wheel and take out an entire cell phone store all at once or hit someone and drag them a few miles not realizing it. In other words, you're a different kind of liability in their view, I wouldn't hold my breath on getting anything cheaper anytime soon.

No it's not, get a trailer. You certainly get a workout if you are towing a bunch of weight, too!

I got a trailer to tote my dog around for longer distances, and it works great if I need to go pickup something big and want to take the bicycle.

That's going to have to be an awfully big trailer to haul around an 80lb lab, kennel and all the windshield repair stuff in it. I suppose he can double the UV dome as a helmet to save some space! :lmao:

Well, the trailer is the kennel.

You can get them with a rack on top, too:

There you go Reese, it's got a little roof rack everything!

Not sure what you're going to do with the big door magnets for Roo's Windshield Repair or the one on the spare tire, but now you can at least transport the tools and Shasta!

State Farm will never get any of my money ever again.

Had a similar bad experience with State Farm after having used their coverage/insurance for 25++ years. State Farm agents/owners/investors should all have to wear shirts that state that they work for or are involved with State Farm, then there should be an open bounty on them....

I don't know exactly who we have our current coverage with, bur 3 years ago, we switched all of our coverage (4 houses, 4 vehicles) to a single carrier. We got more coverage for about half of what we had been spending...

LaDawn, as always, was responsible for this. She finds out all sorts of stuff all the time.....

I ditched state farm when I came back to the States from Okinawa. Called them up, as I needed to get insurance again on a vehicle. They told me that even though I had been with them for years prior to leaving the country, since I didn't have insurance for the last year, they wouldn't cover me. Told them to F off, went with USAA, and have been better for it.
