View Full Version : My 1984 FJ60 build
EldoradoFJ60

Just thought I'd chronicle the progression of my 1984 Toyota Landcruiser. I bought this FJ60 in January. I didn't know half as much as I know know about Cruisers. I just knew I had wanted one for years.
This was one of the first 60's I test drove years ago.I used to drive by Coyote Cruisers up in Fort Collins for work so I always had my eye out.
http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s240/ilbruche/Landcruiser/IMG_4614.jpg
When I brought her home she looked like this.
http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s240/ilbruche/Landcruiser/IMG_0331.jpg
http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s240/ilbruche/Landcruiser/IMG_0384.jpg
Immediately started tearing into things.
http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s240/ilbruche/Landcruiser/IMG_0324.jpg
I took care of the crucial repairs first. I failed emissions first go round so I replaced the thermostat, new cap, rotor, wires, air filter, fuel filter, oil change and a cat back exhaust. Also put in a new clutch master and slave. Also had to replace the intake hose and clean a hornets nest out of the air cleaner.
I was gonna need new tires and springs. These BFG mudders were from 1996 and dry rotted to hell.
http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s240/ilbruche/Landcruiser/IMG_0385.jpg
The first weeks I did a ton of cleaning. PO's had trashed the interior. All sorts of useless plasticy crap was removed.
http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s240/ilbruche/Landcruiser/IMG_0416.jpg
Started building a cargo box to hold all my crap.
http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s240/ilbruche/Landcruiser/IMG_0407.jpg
ditched the center console for a Smittybuilt.
http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s240/ilbruche/Landcruiser/IMG_0429.jpg
Tax return time came so I got new rubber.
http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s240/ilbruche/Landcruiser/IMG_0432.jpg
Tore out my dirty skanky hood insulation and put in a layer of Reflectix.

Blacked out my grill. This took forever as I tried to take the chrome off first.
http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s240/ilbruche/Landcruiser/IMG_0454.jpg
With a wax job she was looking better.
http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s240/ilbruche/Landcruiser/IMG_0488.jpg
Did the 2LO mod and found mice had made a nest atop my tranny using my old hood insulation.
http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s240/ilbruche/Landcruiser/IMG_0492.jpg
Threw on a curly maple T-case knob my old man turned for me.
http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s240/ilbruche/Landcruiser/IMG_0497.jpg
Finished my cargo box and sleeping platform.
http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s240/ilbruche/Landcruiser/IMG_0503.jpg
Starter died so I tossed in a new one.
http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s240/ilbruche/Landcruiser/IMG_0528.jpg
Meanwhile parts were arriving.
http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s240/ilbruche/Landcruiser/IMG_0527.jpg
Replaced my rear cargo panels with Seaboard marine HDPE.
http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s240/ilbruche/Landcruiser/IMG_0632.jpg
Things are looking better.
http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s240/ilbruche/Landcruiser/IMG_0659.jpg
Finally new suspension day arrives.
http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s240/ilbruche/Landcruiser/IMG_0667.jpg
No more saggin' waggin'.

Took a poser flex shot today.
I could have got up higher, but...I was doing some yardwork for this lady who lives nearby. She was attacked by a trash can and got a nasty cut on her head. So while she was at the hospital I drove up the dirt pile. Didn't want them to come home and find me tearing things up. :lmao:

Yeah I hate the wheels. That's why I picked up a set of stock steelies last week. Just need to get them powder coated and mounted.
Brody
May 30th, 2011, 11:48 AM
With some very minor clean up and some wheel paint, you can probably get $150 or more for them on craigslist. Not necessarily from a Yota guy, so don't advertise them as Yota rims, but from a Chevy guy, so advertise them as Chevy wheels....or Chevy/Toyota Wheels....
The last two sets I had of non steel rims that I was selling, one Centerline and the other American Racing, sold really fast when I did that...Maybe the Toyota folks are simply more into function....

Looks great! Nice idea on the reflectix on the hood. That things looks ready for some serious trails.
I am jealous-your rear hatch looks immaculate-mine is starting to get rust spots, I need to look into repainting it/de-rusting it or just getting a new one. The problem seems that whoever has a rust free upper hatch wants a fortune for it.
EldoradoFJ60

For some reason the multi quote isn't working for me. So here goes.
Tint was $260. I had it done at Sun-Eaze in boulder off 47th.
The lean is gone. I am pleased. Tie rods seem good. I need to take up Droldunit on his offer to help set my toe.
I have the basic rust areas, rear fenders, and inside rear fenders by where the seat belts attach. I also have a little spot on the bottom of the tailgate. I have seen many that are rusted beyond belief.

Did a little preventative maintainence last night. My tranny hump was getting hot in the 10 miles I drive to work. Swapped the tranny fluid and checked out the T-case internals while I was down there. Things seem to shift better now and it wasn't as hot this morning.
I still have to discover the source of my oil leak. I hope it's not the rear main. I'd be happy if it was the oil pan gasket or the tranny input/output shaft or whatever else can leak down there. I guess 60's have an issue with rust on the bottom of the oil pan. So that might possibly be the problem. Whatever the cause I was down almost 3 quarts of oil from the time I got my oil changed middle of January.
Tomorrow Brody and I will tackle my front bumper build. :thumb:
Chris
June 3rd, 2011, 09:33 AM
Probably have a bad rear main which isn't uncommon in the 60 series but you'd be wise to tighten everything and clean it all up to trace down where the main leak is. My oil pan bolts were surprisingly loose the first time I checked mine. I was lucky and replacing the oil pan stopped all leaks.

I have OME mediums with Man A Fre +1.5" shackles.
Cargo box build (http://forum.ih8mud.com/60-series-wagons/454381-fj60-cargo-box-build.html) thread.
This weekend I worked with Brody on my front bumper. It's a lot of welding which means a lot of welds to grind down. I just love triangles.
Reusing the vertical supports from my old SOR bull bar. It's basically "done" apart from a couple tweaks and cosmetics. I have to smooth out the welds, paint, etc.
End of frame was boxed and new mounts were welded on.

Needs a little final tweaking. I relocated the initial rear skid plate mounts I had done because it looked like there wasn't going to be quite enough clearance for the shackle if Bruce got really bound up. Made a sweet template with the skid plate on, then cut the old mounts off, welded the new piece in and, at the end of the day when we were fitting it, noticed that the angle was a bit off...Oh well, a little more cutting, welding and grinding next Saturday will have the bumper done, Hi Lift Mounted, and lights installed.
Bruce did a huge amount of the evil work: cutting, grinding and sanding....Thanks Bruce!
EldoradoFJ60
June 11th, 2011, 10:20 PM
Pete and I got the bumper done today. Added light tabs and a tab for mt CB antenna.
Hopefully tomorrow I can finish the final sanding and start getting some paint on. Gonna take everything off, hit the frame with some more paint as well as everything else. Then I'll reassemble everything with my new hardware, which I left at home today.

Cool, been trying to figure out something else for my CB antenna. I got a 4' Firestik on the Firestik mag mount to stick on the roof, but it doesn't fit flush in the middle of the roof since it has those raised sections. It sticks, but I can hear it moving around when bashing around on the trail.
Can't wait to see your finished product. I signed up as a friend on that fuelly site too...

Got some shackles for the front. They are zinc-oxide coated from Poison Spyder. They were a bit too yellow so I hit them with some hammered black rustoleum.
Also getting a headlight upgrade. My drivers low beam is out so instead of replacing the sealed beams I have a set of the Hella E-code H4 replacements on the way. Also have a set of the clear covers coming for my 500's. I started to melt the stone shields.

Took out my rear seats. I sold the rear belts so no point in keeping the seats in. I lose too much cargo room.
This is what my sleeper panel used to look like. One end rests on a lip on the back of my cargo box. The support piece rested on the folded down seat. It was enough room to slide in my stove, camp chair, etc.
http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s240/ilbruche/Landcruiser/IMG_0451.jpg
I took off the support piece. The plan is to have a metal "frame" built to support the panel. It will bolt in where the seats used to bolt on. It will also serve as an attachment point for securing water containers and other gear. I'll toss my Hi-lift under there as well. This will greatly increase my cargo space.

I got my replacement blower motor. It's nice to have air again. The motor I got was from a 1989 FJ62. The cover was dirtier than the one from my 84, rusty actually.
Today Brody fabbed up mounts for my 4Runner seats. I now have lumbar support!
Cut the mounts off the stock seats.

We also got my Hi-lift/rear storage solution figured out. I need to clean it up and paint it tomorrow so no pics of the finished product. Brody and I took a trip to Lowe's for materials. Initially we looked at the slotted angle which would have run $60 for 20 feet. Pete suggested this Superstrut C channel conduit. Much stronger, perfect for this application and only $30 for 20 feet.

Finally got around to fixing the sleeper panel.
I put on a couple door hinges and added some tie downs to the panel. Now I can open it up and clip it to the eye bolts on my c pillars. It's nice to ahve full access to this space without having the panel slip and fall down.
I have been figuring out where to stash junk in the rack. It fits a 5 gallon Scepter water container perfectly. Might pick up one of those baby 2.5 gallon versions. Don't always need the huge jug of water in the back.

Revolver shackles would be the last thing I'd put on my rig for several reasons. Here is one.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DIKOsUHrRSY&feature=player_embedded
Now in other news......
Got the PS cooler installed. No leaks.
http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s240/ilbruche/Landcruiser/August202011001.jpg
And I did a bunch of little things that add up. Put in the spare shifter I picked up and realized it's already bent at a more extreme angle. Seems to have less slop as well. Cut another piece of rubber for my tranny hump.
Never liked the way my center console was attached. Realized I had 2 unused threaded holes I could use for front brackets. Used the brackets that used to be attached to my brake backing plates for mounting.
http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s240/ilbruche/Landcruiser/August202011002.jpg
The brackets are in the "radio slot". I figured I can cut off the excess later on when I put in the stereo.

Nice work! You gotta quite working on that long enough to do some runs (HAHA,,,like I have room to talk...) You always have my garage to work on junk when the weather turns to ****....
The Revolver shackles seem to be one of those things where you either love them or hate them with noting in between. People that love them are always standing in the wings on craigslist waiting for the people who hate them to sell them for a fraction of what they bought them for. I know a lot of people who love the things and about the same number of people who have tried them and hate them. I see them a lot on Sammis (or versions of the same thing) so a very light short wheelbase rig is maybe where they really shine. Of course, I have seen them on just about everything except for full sized trucks and Broncos with the sole exception being Unlimited Off Road's Blazer that has them on both ends of all four springs....linked, too, but that is a beast of a different color.

Revolver shackles would be the last thing I'd put on my rig for several reasons. Here is one.
Great video. Excellent quote: "You're coming down. It's all good." As his front left tire is dragging across the rock sideways.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXVHZMhtJGw&feature=relatedThis video sold me on the idea of not having a revolver shackles. Doubles if built right seem like they can have good street manners and be good for down travel, but still have there issues.

I believe I went up that last spring. If I'd known it was that steep, I likely would have chickened out. :)

Got my new SS brake lines in. Two for the calipers which eliminates the small hardline and one for the axle which is 4" longer. I was really straining the stock line at full droop.
I got the lines from George at Valley Hybrids. Price was $25 cheaper than what Boulder Hose wanted for the same lines.
One of the new lines and the crap they replace.

Installed.

At full lock. They are 12" lines. If I had to do it again I'd go for 14" to have a little more wiggle room.

Not much excitement this weekend. Cleaned up my front axle a bit along with the frame under the wheel wells. Gave them a blast of paint. Also removed my steering stabilizer brackets. Not running the bar and the brackets just get in the way.

PO did some hack job with the cooling system. Ran this line over the air cleaner and added one of those flush tees. Now the cheap POS tee is leaking. I need to figure out how to put it back together correctly.

Found a place to store spare bolts. Inside the engine bay there is a ton of unused bolt holes. Hit some spare bolts with hammered copper Rustoleum and filled them up.

Headlight washer holes hold some more.

Nice and looking good!
Thanks for mentioning the spare bolts storage stuff again. I have suggested that a few times as a convenient 'cheap trick' for carry extra bolts. There are also usually a lot of unused holes in the frame for larger bolts.
To go along with that, you can easily store extra hose clamps of various sizes by simply doubling up the clamps that you have on all of you existing hoses.

Got the rear heat bypassed. All of the heater hoses and the heater itself have been removed. It is nice to have some extra storage under the passenger seat.
Just needed a 3/8" brass plug and some 5/8" heater hose to finish it up.

Well I haven't done much of anything to the rig since the snow started flying. I have been taking her through the car wash when I get gas to keep the rust at bay. I'll get a wash if the weather is especially bad. It's amazing how fast rust starts on a dirty old truck. I have also learned which paints hold up against rust. The stuff I used on my sliders sucked, already rusted. My bumper which is Rustoleum hammered black is holding up great. Rustoleum appliance epoxy also works great.
Looking forward to getting my commuter car so I can have the Cruiser down for repairs. Last summer I spent far too many weekends wrenching when I should have been in the mountains. It will be nice to be able to perform repairs at my leisure instead of a mad weekend rush.
I'm also sure Bjorn will appreciate the rest of not being a DD. Just went over 250K last week.

Goerge from Valley Hybrids made them. $60 for the pair I think. You can find him on IH8MUD. He is Orangefj45 over there I think.
