I dropped a set of the TJ rear coils into the rear of the 4Runner. Doesn't prevent any droop and maybe even helps get a wheel to the ground sometimes. Certainly provides a little extra cushion on the compression side. Keeps from hitting the bumptops. Very happy with the setup. Don't think I could have asked for a better setup for what I intend to do with this rig!

My springs started off as Alcans, but as the budget went and the springs got broken are now a weird mix of odd parts and pieces. Got other parts and pieces in the backyard for the next time I get into them. Thats why I was curious about the wrangler leafs. You get some pretty good flex with what you have, for sure.

A nice simple $380 lift made up of Add-a-leafs and extended shackles. Being limited by my "limiter straps" aka shocks that are about 4inches too short . . . just sitting on the road I had my shocks at full unforced-extension. I'll be removing the shocks and going back to this location to measure up for new shocks and new pictures will ensue.

Yes I do :D I have to admit that I wasn't real sure that it would make any difference till I took it on the trail for the first time. All I could think was that this trail looked a lot rougher than it felt. My wheelin buddy said he couldn't believe the way my front axle was swishing back and forth but the cab stayed level. It really wasn't all that hard to do I just switched the shackle mount to the rear and made new dead eye mounts up front. It is a little more complicated than just that but you get the idea. Lots of tape measure time and welding and grinding. checking angles and checking them again. a few mistakes along the way  but I love the results.

One of the things you have to watch for when doing a reverse shackles is the driveshaft not having enough compression and jamming the driveshaft into the transfer case when the axle moves rearward during suspension compression, in which case something lets go... usually the housing of the t-case.

I guess that I didn't mention that I now use a spicer double cardon d shaft out of an 87 waggy. I did a shortening on it and all was well after the SOA cut and turn. The spicer that I used has a longer travel slip yoke than the original scout d shaft and it is larger in diamater. I am guessing that it came out of the 87 waggy becasue it was sitting in the back of it. It might have come from something else because I didn't remove it myself (I love my local pull a part). I did have to shorten it by 9 inches. but for $40 I couldn't go wrong.

Hey Scoutman! I hope you are reading this! It would be good for you two to hook via email or phone as Scoutfam seems to have done everything that you want to do to yours and probably has some really good answers for ya...
I love those junkyard drive shafts! They always crunch them up moving the trucks around and you can sometimes get a double cardan joint shaft in good shape (minus the dings) for nothing or next to nothing. Who wants a crunched drive shaft, anyway??? Then down to Englewood Driveshaft and get it resleeved for around $100... or do a square spare for about $20. What is ever better is that all you have to do is wander around and find where someone pulled the tranny and there is your cheapo shaft just lying there on the ground. In the case of Toyotas, where the double cardan is a $400++ part and the drive shaft bolts are $5 a pop, this is a really sweet deal as the the driveshaft bolts are usually just lying there, too....
My square spare cost all of $20 worth of scrap steel and some time. The yard gave me the shaft for nothing cause it was almost bent in half. The cardan and the other u joint were real tight and in almost perfect shape. I was lucky and built in just enough play that I can use it on either the front or rear...

Alrighty, the ranger has no real flex in the front with the IFS and the rear is limited due to the overloads on it but here are a few pics of what it does and its not much for now!

Hey Sean
For a real quick and dirty flex fix for the rear, just cut the overload just behind the spring perch on the back side of the spring. The front part of the overload ends up acting like an anti wrap and you eliminate the restriction caused by the rear over load limits. Take you about 20-30 minutes with a cut off in the 4" grinder...
Just a suggestion. I wish there was another quick fix for the front IFS....

Thanks Pete, I am going to give that a try hopefully I can squeeze that in while I am waiting for the grout to dry.

cutting that leaf does it take away from load carring capacity.
Brody
April 6th, 2009, 05:34 PM
You are right, Roland, but Sean is more concerned about the wheeling flex than the load carrying. I have an overload on the 63" Chevy 1/2 ton springs I just stuck under my heap. I left it in for the same reason that I suggested Sean leave the front half in...as an anti wrap spring. I didn't cut the rears of mine off yet as I wanted to see how it does with them left in. If I don't get the flex I want, the rears will get hacked as I can do that in place with no drama.
The reason I left mine in is that I have both of my batteries plus another winch back there, plus the weight of the big ******* spare, plus exo...it is a fat butt little unit...so I figure that things will even out a bit.
I was also more concerned with droop than compression. Droop I got, as I almost had to add a 6" block to my floor jack to get it off the frame stands...
