Been taking stock of the maintenance and mods I have yet to address on my FJ60. The list never ends.

First we have the fun stuff. Things that have nothing to do with how the vehicle runs. This list is huge.

Get stock wheels sandblasted so I can paint them.
Rock sliders. *DONE*
Skid plate.
DIY Bedliner for interior since I tore out the carpet.
New rear bumper with tire carrier.
Aussie locker for the rear.
Convert AC to OBA.
Upgrade to Roundeyes headlights. *DONE. Went with Hella H4 conversions instead*
Install fuse block, 12V outlets in rear.

Then we have the important stuff. Things that keep me on the road.

Front knuckle rebuild. Have all the parts, just need the time. *DONE*
Find source of oil leak. Hoping that Lucas Stop Leak at next oil change will fix the drips.
Replace both leaky rear pinion seals. And while I'm down there I might as well toss in some new u-joints so I'll have some spares.
Service diffs.
Replace worn belts, hoses and vacuum lines. Belts seem good, but some hoses need to be replaced. About $50 worth of silicone tubing from McMaster Carr will do the whole truck.
Check for fuel delivery/carb issues.

To keep things fun I like to do an item from each list together. One thing to increase comfort, another to keep Bjorn running.

Thinking My plan of attack will be to rebuild the knuckles, mitigate the oil leak and fix the pinion seals. Do that along with getting my new wheels painted and putting on rock sliders.

Pretty sure i know what my weekends will consist of for the next 12 months at least. :wrench::wrench::wrench:

Sounds good, pretty much a standard 60 series list! Personally I like to take care of mechanical stuff first so would put the knuckle rebuild on the top of the list with the belts and hoses and sliders now will save you lots of damage which is always good!

Hey, you have a list! Surprisingly, many people don't. I like lists, especially ones that I can cross crap off of. Matt Feeney has been great to work with as he always brings me a list of stuff to do and it is all prioritized. Most of the stuff I end up having to make my own list which also works. I have done that building commercial and residential and also mechanical and fabrication. You stay a bit more focused, I think, when you focus on item #1, take of of it and then go to item #2, etc.

Not really as you already have the flanges for the stock 60 shafts. These are more made to allow a more 'universal fit' of a lot of other Yota drive shafts from other years with slightly different flange bolt patterns. I have them on my heap on both ends, so can run all sorts of junkyarded drive shaft bits and pieces from all sorts of different years. If you don't expect to junk yard source drive shaft parts from time to time and just run the basic 60 style flanges, then this is something that you don't need. It is more of a convenience item.

A couple of things that you may like to get (and may already have):

Marlin heavy duty inner axle seals (other people also make them). These replace the standard stock seal with a 'made for hard duty' inner seal. Worth the extra bucks...
Longfield 'lifetime wipers'. These replace the stock felt inner knuckle wiper with a sweet plastic one. I installed these as soon as they came out and haven't had a drop of leakage since. Again worth the extra $$
Stud kit for the inner knuckles. Don't buy the ready made kits as they are twice( or more) what you can piece the studs together for. AA Metric or any good ACE will have the studs. Saves wishing you had a 3rd hand growing out of your chest when you do the rebuild...

stud kit makes it A LOT easier, although i did not do one last time because I got a backing plate eliminator plate so it got rid of the dust plate. that is the main thing when trying to put it back together.

For the knuckles I already picked up the Trail Gear heavy duty wiper with rock rings. Also got the Marlin backing plate eliminator and the Marlin HD axle seals. I wanted to do everything at once. Still need to pick up the studs. Probably pick those up this weekend.

So for the pinion seals I figured I'd pick up some new dust flange cover doo dads. Any other nuts, washers, etc. I'd need to replace the pinion seals?

After work I'm gonna pick up a Wix 51773 bigazz oil filter and some Lucas oil leak stop. Need to pick up some Castrol GTX diesel 15W40 from Autozone by Pete's place. It's one of the few oils that isn't CJ-4 compliant and still has some ZDDP in it.

Haven't got the bolts...they are from my flywheel inspection cover.

Took it off today while changing my oil to see what was going on. Also tightened down the oil pan bolts. They were not very tight.

In the past I have thought of products like this as snake oil. But man she was just purring when I started her back up. We shall see what happens with the insane leakage.

PB Blaster and start hosing down the pinion nuts as soon as possible.

Should have mentioned the bolts again when you were over here yesterday. I know I have some that would have fit.....

Made some minor tweaks today. Added some tie downs to my cargo box so I can strap down my cooler. Also bolted the box to the floor. I was getting sick of it banging around going over bumps.

Found that all 4 of my rear driveshaft bolts were loose. Very loose. Cut down the front u-bolts and hopefully fixed the cause of my gas smell. PO had screwed into the evap system doohickey while installing rear speakers. When I took that crap out I found the screw was keeping the vapors in. I had some duct tape on it but that has worn out. So I put another screw in the hole and dumped some Superglue on it. I'll need to pick up a new one from Yoda Jim's one of these days.

Threw some more paint on the sliders today.

Decided to spend a little time cleaning the crud off my rear axle and front knuckles.

Got the rear axle so that I can at least see the bolts underneath all the crud.

Swapped out the front and rear diff fill plugs. When I took off the front plug I found Dave's Special Sauce running out. I went inside to grab my camera and this is as far as it ran down.

The front end rebuild is going to be a massive undertaking. I'm doing a ton of extra things "while I'm down there".

Besides the rebuild kit with new bearing and Marlin Crawler HD seals I have.
Trail Gear Rock Rings with poly wipers.
Marlin Crawler backing plate eliminator.
New knuckle studs.

Probably going to pick up a new set of rotors and pads just for kicks. Since I'll be putting in my extended brake line I might as well do some brake work at the same time.

Nice! I like the Steve's Special Sauce. It looks like what I ended up wearing (actually a bit worse) when I changed all my fluids the other day. The tranny puked all over my shoulder. Love the smell of gear oil, especially the old, used stuff...

To loosen the caked on crud I sprayed it with PB blaster and then used a really stiff wire brush. Then rinse with water. Once the majority of the dirt is off I spray it with Purple Power degreaser and use a nylon brush to get rid of the grease and oil.

You gotta be careful with the Purple Power. It will take off paint so you need to rinse it off quickly. Also take care not to over spray it too much.

Well the front end is "done" apart from a few minor tweaks I'll make this weekend.

This Saturday or Sunday I'll work on the rear brakes. New drums, shoes and hopefully the correct hardware.

Time to take a little break and enjoy the ride for a while. But also thinking of the next steps to take. Rear locker + Ruffstuff rear diff guard sounds fun. But I should probably get under the hood and replace a bunch of old hoses and do a coolant flush. My oil pan gasket is also in need of replacement. I tightened the bolts a bit last time I changed the oil and that has actually made it leak more it seems. I'll wait a couple thousand miles and then take care of that oily mess.

Did a little Googling on the subject at lunch. Is there a type of Permatex RTV that would work. I hear the Toyota gasket maker is $$$.

Last night I compressed the pistons on my calipers so now my front brakes don't rub. It's nice to have an e-brake that holds on hills now.

Robbie I can always use a hand. Or sometimes eyes to catch things I miss and have to do over.
I think I'll take the month off from spending my entire weekend working on the truck. Maybe a day here and there.

Man I shoulda painted those new brake drums since they are getting rusty now. Oh well.

Well it's time to focus on engine stuff for a while. Another list begins.

Adjust valves, install new valve cover gasket.
Check that the accelerator pump and secondary diaphragm on the carb are working properly.
Go through the emissions FSM and check all the emissions doo-dads.
Check for vaccuum/intake and exhaust manifold leaks.
Replace fuel pump (might not need it but I won't be happy until I have replaced everything on this truck.)
Replace T-stat gaskets.
Replace oil pan gasket. (Still debating using OEM cork or going with the Toyota FIPG.)
Bite the bullet and buy 50 feet of new vaccuum hose from McMaster Carr. About $50 to do the whole truck.
Replace old rubber fuel lines.
Replace old rubber coolant and radiator hoses.
Replace belts.

I'll be glad to help out. I did the vacuum lines on my 60 and it made a huge difference right away, I found lots of little leaks as I looked through the old hoses. As long as you're monkeying with the carb and fuel pump it would be a good time to rebuild the carb too, if you think it could use it. It's not too tough or expensive of a job and it's possible that's part of your idle trouble.

Well my cart for McMaster Carr says $62 for the 3mm and 6mm vaccuum hose i need. Probably order that soon. A lot of the old stuff is cracked and ready to go at any minute.

The valve job seems easy enough. Working with engines seems like voodoo at first. It would be nice to get more of an idea of what is going on under the air cleaner.

McMaster Caar has some color options. Opaque or semi-transparent. I like the semi-transparent blue. 3mm is 5041K522 6mm is 5041K542.

Had an idea for the valve cover. Instead of paint I might see how Birchwood Casey "Aluminum Black" would look. It's basically gun blue for aluminum. It contains a couple different acids so it basically etches the aluminum.

Topped off with a couple layers of clear coat it might look good.

Well I found one leak. Intake/exhaust manifold towards the back.

Spraying around all the emissions gear I didn't find any leaks.

Any leaks before your O2 sensors are going to throw off the reading that the ECM gets, especially in a cold start situation. Good to notice and to fix.

After getting a lot of fluctuation on the computer program I am using to balance out the short term and long term fuel trims, I decided to check my exhaust system from front to rear. I noticed hairline cracks and broken welds on the headers and pin hole leaks on top of the exhaust lines where it is very hard to get a good weld. I ended up removing the headers and the entire exhaust off and welding up any cracks or broken welds. The truck ran a lot better after that. Total PITA, but worth it.

Since mine is built already, I usually don't post any of this stuff up in a build thread, though I may have mentioned that somewhere as a side note.

Sprayed some carb cleaner where the exhaust manifold attaches to the downpipe. Got an RPM increase. So i definitely have some leaks in that area.

Hmmmm. This carb don't look right. Not getting fuel in the bowl. Need to rebuild this thing. Will probably replace my soft fuel lines and fuel pump also.

Well I don't have a Y connector for my vacuum gauge but I still managed to discover a few things. I also don't have compressed air so I can't test a lot of the vacuum modules.

This VTV on the choke breather was reversed.

is it running any better? I've heard that you can put a BB into each vacuum line and take all the emmisions stuff out of the loop, if it comes to that. :)

It definitely runs "different". I'm just going to slowly replace all of the engine components until it's in need of a complete rebuild. New vacuum lines are on the way.

Replaced a vast majority of the spaghetti today. Tricky parts are the BVSV's (Bi-metal Vacuum Switching Valve). The tiny plastic nipples can break off easily. It's hard to get 2" of line on when you only have an inch of space between connections. Easy fix is to make loops in the lines.

There is a group of lines behind the carb that I'll wait to replace. It's nice to have nice clear blue vacuum lines that you can easily check for kinks or obstructions.

Yes and no. It lets me rule out bad vacuum lines as possible culprits. The carb definitely needs a rebuild. I'd also like to replace the hoses that come off the air pump and air bypass valve, but a lot of those hoses are no longer made and have very specific sizes and bends.

Me too! I have way to many projects and not enough time. I think what helps him best that his main rig project is also his DD so the priority and need is there, vs something that can be parked.

Downside is that I can only have my rig down on the weekends. Leaving me little time to work on and and I'm screwed when the unexpected happens.

OEM part is over $100. Picked up a tuner universal air hose from Autozone. They sell all sorts of that Specter tuner air intake stuff. I think it was this.

Bruce, have you considered swapping to efi? i remember of a kit that you can buy, swapping to toyta factory stuff, but all new and no J/Y trips. cant remember who or where. Man-a-fre maybe?

i think this would be a much better choice over a carb rebuild.

MAF discontinued that kit.

Yoda Jim's was good to me today.

Got a blue fender to replace my dented one. With a wax job and some love it will be ready to go once I feel like putting it on.

Pulled a carb and valve cover off a 1986 with 160K miles.

Got an intake/exhaust manifold that needs to be cleaned up and possibly coated with some high temp paint stuff. Not quite sure where to source the work for that.

Fender has the typical faded scrap yard paint. A quick shot of Meguier's cleaner wax shows that it will clean up nicely.

Tell me about it. Took forever for them to get it off. They just drop the bolts on the ground. So you need to pick them up if you want them.

Last weekend Jonathan helped me fix my rust issues. I wanted to eliminate the rust and holes before winter gets here. Gonna chop down the rear quarters a bit at a later date.

Yesterday I got my replacement valve cover painted up with some Dupli-color cast aluminum engine enamel. It could probably use a clear coat but I think it looks good.

Rear fender rust was cut out with plasma cutter and the seams were stitched back together.

Finally got my damn valves adjusted. It was well worth the $200 spent at the shop and they even took some pics for me and tossed my old valve cover in the parts washer.

Had them replace the last 2 vacuum lines coming off the carb as well.

Much better. No more nasty vibrations at idle.

Still have a wicked vibration at highway speeds. Not sure if it's tires or driveline related.

Well this can't be good. I purchased the last hose they make for the air injection system. It's the hose that runs from the check valve to the air injection rail.

Took off the valve first and noticed a lot of carbon in it. Cleaned it out and proceeded to remove more and more so I could access the hose. Turns out where the hose connects to the air injection rail is completely rusted away. Got this nice handful of carbon out of the hose.

Turns out it's the air check valve on the air injectionrail that has disintegrated.

Luckily I was able to order one from American Toyota. So I should be back in business by next week.

Yeah it looks like the upper part of the check valve is intact. I guess we will see when the new one arrives.

I got the switching valve cleaned up and put everything back together. It seems to run better with better acceleration. It's a good thing I bought that hose because I never would have thought there would have been an issue with the check valve. That's why I want to replace as much as possible on this engine.

My parents once paid $900 to fix 1989 Honda Accord that would die. Turns out all it needed was a $10 fuel filter.

Got out and changed the oil today. Let it drain overnight. Added a quart of Rislone to get some ZDDP back into the oil. Running Castrol GTX 10-40. Changing the side cover and oil pan gaskets will have to wait for spring.

Got out early from work on Friday so I took it in to Discount Tire for a rotation and balance. Little things like that can help out. Got the pressure set to 38 PSI. I had been running them a bit lower.
