That's the plan, I guess we will get it done in sections, tubes around fenders (need to trim first) and then we will be tieing those together.

Cage time, why the EXO over the internal cage?

mattzj98
January 16th, 2012, 12:46 PM
A few reasons.. I'm a big guy, I bought a ZJ over any other jeep for inside room and comfort.. cage would take that away.. also, my body is my frame, so I don't wanna mess up the unibody so I need it outside

You aren't funny, either! Keith was by yesterday (with a friend of his who turns out to be a neighbor) to drop off the radio for Clint. We talk for a bit and as they are leaving, he says "Enjoy your Twilight books!" He wasn't as funny as he thought, also. Of course, I had no real recourse as the first Twilight book that Robyn loaned to LaDawn was prominently displayed right next to my computer as a reminder that it needed to go back to Robyn...Seriously.....:lmao::lmao:

Lol 8k isn't too bad.. Pete, I think u have way more in urs

Brody
January 21st, 2012, 07:58 AM
Ha...I have a spool in the V6 rear, stock shafts and 5.29s. I have a 2000 Taco rear axle with an ARB, stock shafts and 5.29s that I paid $650 for. Biggest axle expense has been the Longfields and ARB in the front and I am still quite a bit under $2000. I can't see justifying $7-8k for an axle on what amounts to a toy.

You also have to account for the weight factor somewhere. Compare:

Front axle

Zuk = 165
Toyota = 220
Dana 30 tj = 230
Spider 9 = 325
Diamond toy = 350
Camo’s 60 =355
Dana 44 60wms = 386

609 = 400-450 depending on wall size and inner c’s
Dana 44 full width = 450
Dana 60 ford = 485
Dana 60 chevy = 525
Volvo = 600
Mog 404 =600
Mog 406 = 650
Rockwell w/o drums and narrowed = 662
Rockwell w/o drums = 682
U1300 = 710
rockwell w/ drums = 842lbs

toy housing = 50
Diamond 609 w/ .25 wall chromo and stock 60 inner C's = 68
Diamond 609 w/ .375 wall dom with Dedenbear inners = 100
dana 60 housing = 160

Rear axle

Zuk = 130
Toyota = 150
Dana 44 tj = 150
Camo’s 60 =225
Ford 9 =225
Dana 44 fw = 250
Dana 60 =300
Corp 14sf 3/4 ton version w/ disc = 375
Corp 14sf 3/4 ton w/ drums = 420
Corp 14ff w/disc = 475
Dana 70hd =480
Dana 80 = 505
Rockwell w/o drums = 532
Corp 14ff = 550
Mog 404 = 550
Mog 406 = 620
rockwell stock = 692

You not only have to allow for adding a shitpot of weight and have the additional power and gearing to turn the damn things, but you also have to keep in mind what you are attaching it to. A unibody style frame/body like the Cherokee and Grands, in my mind, simply doesn't have the strength to attach a big axle to. You would have to build almost a complete sub frame to handle a Dana 70, Dana 80 or Rockwell, whether you plan on using them in the front or rear and if you get to that point, then you may as well start a new build with something that actually has separate frame and body to begin with, like a 70s era 3/4 ton.

Well my Ford has done some trails, my area, Mt. Blanca Rd or Lake Como Rd., Medano Primitive Pass and has also recovered many rigs:) It has also been a great work truck, family hauler and travel trailer puller. (Pete, you can attest, it is also a great parts hauler:lmao:)

Use the chart that Sean posted in the TECH section (Calculating the weight of steel). Figure around 140-160 feet of 1/8" 1 3/4" DOM and you will have a good idea. It is also very equally distributed.

I haven't noticed much difference in the performance and handling of my heap from before and after I put the exo on. The three things I noticed most were that I don't worry to damn much when I hear metal crunching in tight spots on the trail, if it flops, I lose a $5 side mirror, and changing lanes is so much easier especially when someone doesn't want to let you in, turn signal or not. Oh....in parking lots, when someone slams their door into your rig, it is their car that gets all the damage.....

mattzj98
February 9th, 2012, 06:30 PM
OK, got really bad news from High Country Performance 4x4 today.

Transfer case is going bad, it will be warrantied and not an issue. There are lots of other issues apparently though.
to get to the tcase they need to cut all sorts of welds and unbolt my front axle (all is hooked up to crossmember / skid) that in itself is going to run me about 600 bucks (From what I heard so far) say I pay that, I get my tcase fixed and front end properly mounted up.. there are a number of other issues that need to be addressed.

front drive shaft can hardly take the abuse of the angles and it's toastin my CV, not good.
my track bar needs to go up at least 4 inches cause it at too much of an angle..
my rear control arm brackets are missing a bolt (apparently, even though I used every bolt that came in the hardware kit:confused: ) because of the missing bolt, the brackets have play, and they are tearing up my subframe which is tin metal. I also have had no brakes for a while because somehow my brake booster went out the day I got my jeep back from brakes plus from bleeding them.. (weird huh?) oh and the tcase mount is most likely shot anyway. needs replaced.

Heres my train of thought: Sell that piece of crap and get a big truck to go to the mall every weekend..

no, F that.

I'm thinking a Dana 60 front end will HAVE to have aftermarket custom brackets anyway, so my front end is going to be completely different, and angles will be a lot better, hopefully i will get my hands on a high pinion one which will fix the driveshaft issue as well.. BDS warranties their stuff for life, so i might have the brrackets warrantied (exchanged) and weld them on in the first place so that they cant tear out..

while HCP4x4 fixes the tcase, I will ask them to slap in the new tcase mount and once again, weld in the front skid / crossmember so its solid and in place.. Brake booster, 50 dollar part that I hope I can fix myself when its warm out..

long story short:
Needs to be done: (on top of having HCP do the Tcase)
tcase mount
control arm brackets
dana 60 (therefore fixing a lot of issues)
brake booster..

Any Thoughts? I really don't wanna see the Jeep go but i'm at a point where I could just walk away from it and cut my losses. but then I will probably regret it for the rest of my life.

Hypoid
February 9th, 2012, 06:45 PM
Starting over is not a benefit unless the unibody is trashed. Get the subframe plated and bolt that skid/crossmember to the heavier steel.

With a new axle comes new steering. :)

You let Brakes Plus touch your equipment...WHY???

Chris
February 9th, 2012, 06:46 PM
Sell it to Scrat! I hear he likes to buy stuff that needs a lot of work!

Seriously Matt, do an accurate calculation of the costs ahead and think about what you like a don't like about your truck. Would you do anything differently? What would it cost starting from scratch?

shadyjk
February 9th, 2012, 06:59 PM
Easy fix for the rear: Get new brackets. Plate the "frame" and modify the bracets to fit on the plate.

Make the plates as long as possible, the correct shape to be welded onto a frame, drill holes in it , and weld it 1 inch on/1 off, and fill the holes. Then fit the brackets and weld them on.

For the axle, this is more complicated. You need to do it all at once and do IT RIGHT. Do the steering at the same time. This way you will correct the roll center-this will add some understeer and make the vehicle safer to drive-and alllow you to raise the draglink/trackbar mount to correct the steering angles. This will require a custom trackbar mount. I would use an aftermarket knuckle like Crane/Reid on the PS side. This will allow for a crossover setup and correct the draglink angle.

As for the drive shaft you have 2 options. Lower the entire drivtrain or lower the vehicle.

Good Luck!

Fordguy77
February 9th, 2012, 07:06 PM
As for the drive shaft you have 2 options. Lower the entire drivtrain or lower the vehicle.

3, if your willing to cut and turn the axle housing. To properly do a SOA on Scouts and FJ60s and a few other rigs, this is pretty much the only way to get the pinion angle right.

mattzj98
February 9th, 2012, 07:15 PM
What would it cost starting from scratch? Chris, this Jeep IS my starting from scratch.. and adding up the amount of money sunk in this pos makes my head spin. I wouldn't have done much differently, I was just aware that eventually I would need a bigger beefier axle front and back.. I guess this is the time.

You let Brakes Plus touch your equipment...WHY??? It was a while back, I had no time (work and school) and they were the only people open and near my work to take it in and do it before im off work. also charged 85 bucks to do :(

No need to sell, we have a date with Carnage!

You were going to get a dana 60 anyway, just sounds like it'll be sooner than you expected.
That we do, I guess ill dish out for the 60

ever see another Grand as built as yours?
no, never. not unless you're talking cut to **** and turned buggy.. i've seen those. the whole point for me is to have this nice big and comfortable grand cherokee.. so no, havent seen one as built haha good point

Sell it to Scrat! I hear he likes to buy stuff that needs a lot of work!
he wouldn't know what to do with it. I would hate to see it parked outside a mall :P JK!

mattzj98
February 9th, 2012, 07:18 PM
Get new brackets.
Done, thanks to You.
Plate the "frame" and modify the bracets to fit on the plate.

ill do my best to figure that one out

do IT RIGHT
wouldnt have it any other way.
As for the drive shaft you have 2 options. Lower the entire drivtrain or lower the vehicle.

the 60 being high pinion should achieve the same thing as the drivetrain being lowered right? plus I might go down an inch or two since im cutting fenders for clearance anyway

Hypoid
February 11th, 2012, 08:34 AM
I ran through LKQ-Western last night, the axle was gone from the '77. There was a '73 (drum brakes) and a '79 there, both are half ton trucks. Taking the time to swap knuckles would get the desired result, and let you inspect the spindles and shafts before buying it. That is a lot of brain damage if there is a complete asembly somewhere else, but still, check the spindles for wear and neglect.

Price is much the same as other yards, around $150 to get out the door.

Price them at a junkyard. Last Dana 60 I priced at Pull and Pay was $150. Western Auto had one for $160.....You need to go to a junkyard...Yup, an axle assembly is an axle assembly. The only way to find that golden nugget is to be there when they set it out.

Here's some unit body stiffeners Matt. Problem is you have to unbolt the suspension to get them underneath the long arm mounts for it to be done correctly. Much stronger than the T & T stiffeners and spreads the welded load much better.

Good luck!

Price out the component cost to build what he's selling. If he's keeping the high steer arms, counter-offer accordingly.

As for the rest of the steering, start with a clean slate. :)

Cr33p3r
February 16th, 2012, 10:40 AM
Matt ask if there is build sheet and receipts for all of it, also what is the lift height and how close would it be to yours and how about the pinion angle and has the knuckles been turned, whats the caster set at is all questions to ask him before you pay anything for it. Better to know now before you end spending after buying it. Just my :2c:.

mattzj98
February 16th, 2012, 03:42 PM
Will be up there tonight with Scrat. as far as lift goes, mines so big that any high pinion high steer stuff will be better than what I have. I will find out everything else later when I'm there. Already know ill need to add a control arm tower

Now all you need is a full width 60 for the rear!

mattzj98
February 17th, 2012, 01:01 AM
I just had my rear end built. it should be as strong as a dana 60.. just need to figure out the width. i can make up for it with rim backspacing i guess. or install the super 88s thing where it makes the tubes 2 inches longer (not spacers) and then with spacers it should be pretty close..

if i break the 8.8 then ill think about a 14 bolt

Popsgarage
February 17th, 2012, 01:06 AM
Dana 60 full floater is gonna be a bit lighter than the 14BFF and should be plenty strong enough.

mattzj98
February 17th, 2012, 01:08 AM
true.. but for now i am very happy with my rear end :)

Popsgarage
February 17th, 2012, 01:15 AM
FYI the 60 is going to weigh in about 50 to 75 pounds less than the 14BFF.

mattzj98
February 17th, 2012, 01:22 AM
cool, thanks Jon. the 44 was soo heavy even with the steering off.. was an excercise in and out of truck

mattzj98

Mostly bolt in. It was previously under an XJ. So it should need very little.

mattzj98
February 28th, 2012, 09:38 PM
a visual for some of the parts that are in the front axle, the build wasnt the easiest, because of the truss being so high, everything has changed, the trackbar had to be shortened about 5 inches, custom shock mounts were welded in, and my Pitman arm was Reamed (?) (bored out) to accept my new 1 ton steering joints

mattzj98
February 28th, 2012, 09:44 PM
The PSC Hydro assist still needs to be installed (tabs are already welded on, just need the free time to do so, or have someone do it.)

I am weak. I admit it. I am a total wimp.

I have had roll cages in every 4x4 I have had (tested 'em, too) ever since I endo'd a 77 Ford F 150 (early to mid 80s) without one and had to squeeze out of a very small opening that was all that was left of the cab (If I had had 10 more pounds on either may ass or my belly, I wouldn't have fit and would have had to either cut that off too, or die trying...).....upside down, smelling gas, and after finding my knife to cut my seat belt...in the dark and by myself....

I bet that did absolute wonders for the unibody. I wonder what he stuck the axles on later.,...
