April 13th, 2012, 11:41 PM
I'll offer you a kick in the nuts for trying to sell it! WHY?
Like I said, I want to build a ferrari haha a 430.
But I might keep it if no real offers come through. So far one guy was going to trade me his YJ on 36s, mildly built, and throw in a new ish quad Yamaha YFZ450.. I told him I have to think about it..

Spent all day at Popsgarage's place, did some awesome welding for me on the new control arm brackets as well as welding gussets or supports to make them even tougher! I have pics of that as well! :)
Thanks again Jon!

so couple of days ago, I decided to try to fit my jeep in my own garage.. IT WORKED! I had to take off my roof rack, my light and light bar, deflate my tires.. but it worked!
so I started tearing in to my suspension, took my rear long arms off and found this! /
not so great
mattzj98
April 15th, 2012, 12:45 PM
replaced the control arm brackets with brand new ones from BDS, put my jeep back together and headed over to Popsgarage to have it welded in place so it doesnt torque on the brackets anymore when I do my stupid crap haha
Jon did some awesome welding for me as well as bracing the new control arm brackets

Jon, id also like to see if Friday we can do a little something quick. I want the bumper and the mounts (front) welded permanently welded on to the frame since the weight of the whole jeep will be suspended on the front bumper / winch on sat..
What do you think? Simple tack welds?

mattzj98
April 28th, 2012, 09:18 PM
Got a few things done. Fitted 40s on the jeep, know what needs to be done. Will be doing some body work and modification to the cargo area. Also, carnage canyon messed my jeep up, so ill be taking plastic cladding off and repainting. Sanded bumpers down and re did those, also, the rocks folded my rear diff cover and bent it to hell.. picked up a new Riddler cover, slapped it on last night with a few friends. Its black shiny with the "right" gree on the square and the R on it. Turned out pretty BA!
mattzj98
April 30th, 2012, 05:29 PM
The new DIff cover, and 40s vs 35s! huge difference!!
mattzj98
May 2nd, 2012, 06:46 PM
this weekend (maybe?) ill be trimming and redoing the body in the back of the jeep to accomodate the bigger tires.. restitching the unibody and replating the floor and arond wheel wells.. major project.. Wonder what's gonna happen :)

May 28th, 2012, 10:32 AM
Bought a cover for the rear end since Carnage Canyon folded out edges of my old one in so many spots.. it was not easy to remove the old one since the tin metal was folded over the bolts.. made a major mess in the driveway..
new one came unpainted so i painted everything black, but the R in the square had to be green :)
mattzj98
May 28th, 2012, 10:35 AM
finished product, not bad! i also used thicker oil so all my clunking from the locker went away! great success!
mattzj98
May 28th, 2012, 10:38 AM
then I took the messed up doors apart, found out that the flop messed up my Focals in the doors, so I went to buy new speakers, new doors, (used) panels and mirrors and started swapping wire harnesses, window motor, speaker, door panels etc.. and of course trying my best to color match it all

Really nice job Matt!! I have been out of the auto music industry too long, I have never heard of Focal. Rockford Fosgate is what I was pounding back in the mid 80's to early 90's, tinnitis is what I am rocking out to now :).

You're not alone Paul, frequently when we're out Barb will say "Shut off the motor, I love the silence up here" and I just wonder what that must sound like. :erm:
mattzj98

def. came early!! I just ordered a PSC Hydro assist kit online.. should be in by next weekend.getting a steering box too.. can't wait! tires are mounted and balanced but i get a death wobble. Found a bad track bar bushing. Called HCP4x4, picking a new one up tomorrow!

I guess I get to continue this afterall!
need to update this thread a little bit! gonna try to get some pics and whatnot together this week:)
mattzj98
April 9th, 2013, 10:57 PM
Iprobably wont remember most of the things but since last update, I gutted out the headlights, replaced with a set CrawlerReady sells, unfortunately makes it very not street legal
they are HIDs and def. love them!
rewired the whole lights / lightbar, mounted switches in the center console w/ proper fuses and distribution block
Mounted 39" TSL's
upgraded brakes
Got Centramatic Wheel balancers, which are AWESOME! highly recommend, especially on bias ply tires!!
PSC Ram Assist is also on, with new steering
New Durango steering box upgrade since the PSC box is a no go
stretched the wheelbase a little bit, ended up having to cut the bumper up a bit, cut off some sheetmetal that used to support the old bumper
i've also ripped my trackbar brackets off on China wall while being a jacka$$ so i took it to a buddy's shop and got an extremely beefy trackbar mount made, and plated the frame with quite some steel
I've also got the Charcoal Canister re-plumbed and deleted so it's no longer in front of the tire and I don't have to worry about ripping it off!
Lights all wired up

Also, received a 42 inch pro light bar (LED) that has replaced the 4 lights off my roof. Next addition comes tomorrow. 6 LED boxed in rock lights, courtesy of Olympuss Offroad. Can't wait to hook them up! The light bar looks and works amazing!

Jeep update:
Jeep is getting a complete overhaul! 14 bolt finds its way In the rear, FOA racing coilovers, detroit and chromolys, should make this rear end indestructible. To top it all off, tabzone full truss and yoke guard. 17 inch enduro beadlocks.
Of course the whole jeep got decked out with LEDs which are pretty sick! And bright! The tow rig. The cummins also got the LED treatment. Can't wait for it all to come together... pics coming soon

Thanks Levi.
Build continues! I picked up FOA air shocks and coilovers! Time to start cutting into the tub for coilover hoops. The 1 bolt axle is coming along. I've done disc brake conversion, built my own brackets and truss. Got a call from Green Country Offroad saying my brackets needed to be relocated. Bummer cause I have to cut them off now.. BUT they are sending me a free set of their brackets.
I also picked up gears and lockers. Should be going under the jeep by this or next weekend

little update: air shocks are charged up to 500psi, ZJ proves to be a heavy beast even for the 2.5 shocks.. Driveshaft comes off today and hopefully gets delivered to Bill so he can do his thing!

:thumb: I was shocked at how heavy a ZJ is compared to an XJ. My XJ I drive with no sway bar all the time. Took the sway bar off ZJ and couldn't even go around a corner without so much body roll my tires rubbed.
alot of that is caused by the zj having coil springs front and rear where the xj has leafs in the rear. the leafs are alot more stable than coils without a sway bar

Does anyone know what brake lines do I need to get to make my brakes work on 14 bolt?
Popsgarage
February 17th, 2014, 10:11 PM
Your extended lines should hook right up. Use the distribution block your extended line came with and get hard lines that fit the distribution block. I assume you're running disc brakes in the rear. Order the soft lines that go from the hard lines to the calipers from Offroad Design.
The StRanger
February 17th, 2014, 10:47 PM
Just check for SAI or Metric.
mattzj98
February 18th, 2014, 12:15 AM
Jon, I have very had extended lines on my jeep (in the back)
They are discs And I have no block that sits on the axle
Popsgarage
February 19th, 2014, 08:57 PM
Did the factory line run to a single point on the topish part of the axle, or did the lines run down each control arm Matt?
mattzj98
February 20th, 2014, 01:06 AM
I believe the factory lines ran into one little box,and then split to each caliper

Ya. The vent tune holds the block down ..
mattzj98
February 21st, 2014, 02:58 PM
I wonder if I can just pick up stainless steel braided lines that I can split and run along control arms to each caliper seperately or not.. otherwise I guess I'd have to pick up 14 bolt brake lines and see what works
sunk
February 21st, 2014, 03:08 PM
When I converted my 14 bolt rear to disc, I used the existing brake hard line from my old 10 bolt (had the junction that mounts to the diff and both sides). All I needed to purchase was a couple of short SS lines the attached to the end of each line to the calipers. You may look at a junk yard, those should be everywhere, and you can pick up SS lines from Leary Racing

Got the LED kick, so i got more lights. as of now I have 9 rock lights, 2 Pods on the bumper, and the lighbar, as well as the HID lights in place of headlights!
Started to build a 14 bolt for the rear end. Plan was to start looking into coilovers. In the mean time, I got the chance to run in Monster Jam in Denver... so yeah, i took it!

anyway, back to 14 bolt build. Mostly cleaned up, and stripped down. nice stock cover... hubs and rotors picked up! I'm going to use 1980s Cadillac Eldorado calipers since they have that nice useless ebrake bracket!

I have started to wrench on the jeep again. First project to tackle rear brakes again. I swapped out cadillac calipers to a 3/4ton 4x4 subutban fronts. They were a bit deeper so I had to modify the brackets, but end result.. looks like it fits!! Going to continue saturday bright and early

Matt that is one nice ZJ ! Good job would love to see it in person.
Is it street legal and if so how dose the rig/coilovers ride on the street, I'm thinking of coverting the XJ to coil-overs on all 4, mine is not a DD and I dont want to trailer it at this time
mattzj98

Mine specifically is not street legal but could easilly be made legal. I choose to trailer it due to gas mileage tire cost and the safety factor.. the coilovers are great! Ride very well

Coilover reservoirs finally properly mpunted. Abs system ripped out of the jeep, master cylinder swapped to a ram 2500. Only needed to modify the pushrod on my booster to make it work! Used a half inch longer bolt and filed it round. Works great. Still awaiting the package from Wilwood

neither, Cliff. they required drilling and using bolts nuts and lock washers. everything went fairly smooth, except for 2 bolts where i just can't get my hands into. I'll be hiring a friend of mine with slightly girlier hands than mine to see if he can get them in haha

Well, a few awesome things got done on the jeep. The monster v8 had a new top end, and K&N intake good for 10,000 horsepower.
Lol
The rear suspension was cut off, I ordered custom Clayton brackets, and had my good friend do some beastly links for the new and improved triangulated rear end!
Even the upper links are now 2", 250 wall DOM with the upgraded ballistic joints, courtesy of CrawlerTech!
I have also ripped off my rear tire carrier. Rockhard4x4 is awesome enough, (they follow my build and adventures on IG) they paid to have the broken one shipped back to them, and are designing a stronger prototype just for me.i expect it to arrive in less than two weeks!!

yeah, i got a phone call from the actual owner of the company who said this has never ever happened to anyone.. i told him not everyone jumps their jeep at monster jam, or has a tire bigger than the recommended biggest tire size.. none of this mattered, i am getting a new prototype shipped to my house :)

Streetable....not with full hydro. You are required to have a mechanical conection for the steering.
DOT requirement!

You need to look past Colorado law.
Department of transportation is the governing body for anything more than a county road.
As 90% of the roads we travel on are a highway....if it has sign with nubers and state or federal highway, DOT makes/writes the laws governing that road.
Streetable I get.

They still have a mechemical connection to the vehicle.
As in an electric rac-n-pinion.
The DOT wants someing tangible that will steer the vehicle if the engine is dead.
Hydro assist qualifies,as,the box is still in place and can steer without the engine( I know electric etc). On an electric or hybreed car there is battery power to tell the computer to turn the rack.
Even in a newer all drive by wire, everything works as long as the power is still there and in the on position.
Not my laws, just have to know them as to keep ones self out,of the relm of LIABILITY

It's internet lore; one guy said it, someone else repeated it and now its a "fact". At the bottom of that page they are offering a Bounty to anyone that can prove it's illegal anywhere but Tennessee. I'd just make sure the shop owner is a registered PE with insurance, any liability should go back to them.

What are the regulations about plates? Can you post a pic of that page in your book, or just list the section numbers? I just went through that and according to the HP officer that did the inspection license plates are issued and regulated by states, the federal government only issues and regulates plates for it's own vehicles. Illumination is federal, but mounting and style are not. For example, in SC you can have a vertical plate, and in Colorado you have a front plate while in Alabama or 18 others its rear only, personalization, frame and cover laws vary too. Heights vary too from state to state.

Updates! Sam no longer works with Jon at flop shop due to drama, but has his own shop and is continuing the fantastic work here and there as time allows.
My full hydro fully operational
new custom exhaust, no more heat and fumes in the cab
the King Pin High Pinon D60 is all done, and locked. Full Yukon treatment as planned
the rear blew out an axle seal but I did replace it and it appears to be holding up, also Full Yukon treatment there (less the diff cover)
King coilovers on all 4 corners now 14s front, 16s rear
King Bump Stops are on order, should be here within a week, I'll be trailering the jeep back up to Flyin' Iron Fab (Sams new shop!) to get those bumps in the back and keep that tire off the fenders.
also need to replace the winch..
I guess this portion of the build is mostly done, up next is some maintenance issues, resolve the running hot ordeal, maybe a flush + new radiator? its been over 10 years.. also need to replace the doors, or at least a window regulator.
Next phase of the build is bucket seats, cage and maybe upgrade the Tcase again to something lower. Once that's done, idk what more could be done! seems like end is in sight!

Some updates to this build:
Finally got my new Warn winch and upgraded the rope to the Spydura 12k rope. I love the new VR winch with wireless remote its such a nice touch. went with a 10k and it seems to be perfect.
I finally managed to get a set of Corbeau seats as well as Corbeau brackets which will accept 4 point harnesses which means im ready for a cage! Corbeau also decided to collaborate with me and made me their brand ambassador which means perks all around!
lastly, the new beadlock and a new spare tire finally came in. Goodie pack from Macs Tie Downs came in handy with the Y-strap and some new straps for bikes and jeep alike. This is turning out to be a busy few weeks as far as jeep goes.
mattzj98
January 15th, 2023, 10:51 AM
The seats of course didn't go without a fight. 1 bolt in each side broke off with the impact due to having mud and rocks caked on from the underbody. It required creative welding and heating and spraying wd40 to get them extracted. Well worth it in the end. Also, apparently since I'm still very broken, creative spare loading is a must, but I'm so happy its finally in!
