Hey all,

I've talked with a few people about this and it came up in another thread recently.

The idea is to have a daily driver/sports car run. I know there are plenty of people here with performance sports cars, be they WRX/STI, Porsche, BMW, Audi, Saab, Mazda, whatever. I've been wanting to get out and do some "peppy" driving with mine for a while, and thought it would be fun to get a group out. When I first got my Subaru, I went out on a group run with some of the local Subaru enthusiast and it was a ton of fun. I think one of them had like 30-40 WRX's and hot Subbies.

I was thinking an after work weekday thing, starting at like 6pm or so. I have a route picked out, but am open to ideas too. I'm more looking for a what time of day, and what day people have free. I'm thinking meeting at Slee Offroad or somewhere near there (just off Highway 93 which is the road between Golden and Boulder).

Here is the route I have in mind...

http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=39.8335975,-105.4302103&daddr=39.8335974,-105.4302098+to:39.863519,-105.4450173+to:39.93266,-105.42975+to:39.91725,-105.3500932+to:40.07103,-105.38515+to:40.014922,-105.313754+to:CO-119%2FBoulder+Canyon+Dr&hl=en&sll=40.031558,-105.419998&sspn=0.201365,0.307617&geocode=FbPmXgId3Ta6-Q%3BFf3PXwIdP0O3-SkvD8Fo571rhzHcrJtIcLMi_A%3BFd9EYAIdZwm3-SnpBO24W75rhzGUClQnNuXOGw%3BFfRSYQIdCkW3-SkbKVTDbMBrhzGagWYmuv8pSA%3BFcIWYQIdM3y4-SkHSBBq25RrhzFlipVXNrNGuA%3BFXZvYwIdQvO3-SlvxKzLFOhrhzHXG-P6ZLv0jw%3BFUqUYgIdJgq5-SmrSSGg_-trhzH-XOM5Y8RNeg%3BFdaIYgIdmDK5-Q&mra=dpe&mrsp=6&sz=12&via=1,2,3,4,5,6&z=12

- Start with a drive up Golden Gate Canyon and into Golden Gate park

- Golden Gate park has a road called Mountain Base Road, which is almost single lane but has some very fun little sections

- From there, GAP road and a Right onto the Peak to Peak towards Nederland

- In approximately 7 miles, take a right down Coal Creek Canyon road

- Another 6 miles down that, we take a left onto Crescent Park Drive, which is at least partially gravel.

- This takes us over towards Gross Reservoir and South Boulder Creek (the creek that flows into Eldorado Canyon)

- Lots of twisty gravel roads that are nicely graded, and eventualy dump us out onto Flagstaff Road (the ones that goes up Flagstaff Mountain through the Flatirons (all paved and very twisty).

- Down that, through Boulder and eventually to Mapleton Ave which turns into Sunshine Canyon Road and goes towards Gold Hill. Parts of this are Gravel too, but also has some nicely paved twisty bits.

- Once through Gold Hill, we take Gold Run Road, which turns into Fourmile Canyon Drive and eventually deposits you onto 119 and back into Boulder.

- Conveniently, this also lands us at the top of Pearl street, and I personally would love to partake of a Rio Margherita afterwards.

Its about 75 miles of driving, and should take less then 3 hours if we don't stop a ton.

Lastly, while I don't condone speeding or reckless driving, I can't say we'll be keeping to a slow pace. I plan on taking advantage of the sportiness of my vehicle, but not so much as to be reckless. Part of the reason I want to do an after work run is to 1) Do it when there is less traffic and 2) Less people and cops on the twisty bits.

Let me know what ya'll think.

Gravel and my 944 do not go well together. If I still had my Audi 4kq I would be down.

They are graded gravel roads, so i would think it would be fine. We can always cut them out though. Plenty of fully paved ones up there too.

I like the idea, but can't make it with the baby. Maybe another time! Would look forward to taking the Miata out, again preferably on paved roads. RWD sports cars just don't do well, even on graded dirt.

Well I could fix just about anything on the A3.

I don't know about anyone elses windshield, mine costs around $800.
It is currently perfect.

"Well I could fix just about anything on the A3. "

Ok...Brad can lead on the gravel so he doesn't break a windshield. Gotta love Porsche. I thought the 944 was supposed to be the "accesible" model.

Honestly, even if we outpace a certain car for a bit, its not gonna be a "balls to the walls" kind of thing. As fun as it sounds to have a group of 10 guys doing 50mph over the speed limit for 3 hours, I doubt that will be the case. I think we might attract some attention doing that. Just might be a bit more brisk of a pace then your average driver might be comfortable with.

Gravel might steer some people away from wanting to do it. Something like Mt Evans is always fun, and it can end at Beau Jo's for pizza.

Thats fair enough, its just the best way to get from the Peak to Peak over to Flagstaff Mountain, which is a really good driving road.

I've never been up Mt. Evans, so that would be fun too. Here is another fun set of roads that would take that into account...

http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=Morrison,+CO&daddr=39.66341,-105.28152+to:39.6761664,-105.4510268+to:Idaho+Springs,+Colorado+80452+(Mt+E vans)+to:Idaho+Springs,+CO&hl=en&sll=39.682354,-105.452271&sspn=0.158532,0.41851&geocode=Fd8QXQIdROm6-SnDT0W9F3hrhzFoElgtTVUA7w%3BFTI3XQIdEIi5-SmDrvhjTpxrhzGTmRVABImriA%3BFQZpXQId7vG2-SkLA0y-gKFrhzFp4JvPfq6DQg%3BFZQPXAIdQQS0-SFQBYmVmdKV_g%3BFRhsXgIdeP21-SlVbhvJJaVrhzFoP1-R4pqe-w&gl=us&mra=ls&via=1,2&z=11

Start in Morrison, go up Bear Creek Road through Evergreen, up Mt. Evans and then down into Idaho Springs for dinner.

I could go for either really. We could also find a non gravel option for the Nederland area stuff too.

I really like the road to MT Evans. Twisty's are fun. And for a Porsche the 944 is accessible, just the windshield with the antenna inlay is expensive.

I would be down. I think i can make it any day but saturday. I would prefer no gravel but it wont stop me either. It would be kinda fun to see if my $1800 dollar 7 seater beater can keep up with you guys.

Assuming my brakes get here this week, i wouldn't mind joining up on this run.

I'd be in on 2... the tires on my WRX are pretty bald right now... waiting for fall to buy new ones.

If you really need new tires, I could let you borrow my winter tires. They are beyond being useful in the snow, but would be fine for dry or gravel driving.

Sounds like I am the only one who actually WANTS to do gravel, so I'll keep the route to paved roads only. I think the Mt. Evans highway via Morrison and Bear Creek canyon sounds like a winner. How does a Thursday evening run sound? I'm thinking the first Thursday in August for this, with a 6pm meet time at the Dinosaur Parking lots right of I-70. That gives people time to get out of work and such.

Doh....totally forgot to post this as an actual run. Do people have a preference between Thursday and Friday next week? I am kind of leaning towards Friday since people will be gearing up for the weekend and can do a late night thing. I am willing to change it to make it work for others too.

Hey guys, Nick mentioned in an PM that it might be worth postponing this for a week or two in hopes that we could get more people on the trip. I'm still down even if its just me and another person, but if people feel like having some more time might fill the run up a bit, then I'm down with that too. I'm down with making this a monthly event anyways, so we could just consider this a scouting/trial run. I know at Accord Ranger and myself are in, and he has a friend that is probably going. Fordboy might be in if he gets his clutch going. GM4x4lover is in still, though I'm not sure if he is still planning on coming after the PM. I'm still down for sure too, and I'm gonna try and coerce Red Rhino to come along since I've never seen his Porsche on the road.

If I were not dealing with my mother and possible camping I would be in for sure! If you hold off a week or two I would like to do the Mt. Evans run.
