I am planning on replacing all the gaskets on the 22r with the exception of the head gaskets. I have always heard people arguing back and forth over OEM and aftermarket gaskets. I have honestly always used Fel-Pro or the like when replacing gaskets, and i have never experienced anything negative with them, other than the occasional hole thats off just a hair or 2. It seems that every toyota board i read up on the net always insists on using nothing but the toyota oem gaskets. And i always see when someone challenges it goes ignored and everyone continues the push for nothing but OEM. I was just wondering what everyone's personal experiences are with this?

toyota guys are religious... I had a 22r in my 81 truck and a 2F in my 86 FJ60, and I did a bunch of gaskets, belts, hoses and every vacuum line on both, all from NAPA, no problems at all. I bought the vacuum line in bulk on a roll from them, I remember it was an odd size and they were the only store that carried it. I rebuilt both carbs with NAPA kits with no problems either, and the kits were very complete. I've also done the carb and waterpump in my 25 hp Johnson with NAPAs marine line, all good quality. ofcourse the toyota stuff is great, toyota rocks, but that doesn't mean everyone else's sucks. I would imagine most mechanics outside the dealership use aftermarket stuff regularly, you always see NAPA or CARQUEST signs at small garages.

What he said. Toyota gaskets are fine, but even with the discount FR members get at Stevinsons, are still pricey. NAPA gaskets work just as well, and Fel Pro makes good gaskets. I have probably used most of the gaskets that are out there, made by many different makers and have had no trouble with ANYTHING I have used. Yota people sometimes have their heads stuck up their asses when it comes to stuff like that, although Yota folks don't hold the monopoly, just seem to a bit more fervent.
And yeah, I have owned a few Yotas....

If you aren't replacing the head gasket, the rest don't really matter where you get them from. I think its worth spending the money for the Toyota Headgasket (even though I didn't follow my own advice for my engine build), but the rest are just normal paper gaskets and aren't really going to be much different from the actual Toyota ones. I ended up using the HeadGasket that came with my Rock Auto kit, and its hold allright for now. If it fails, I'll probably replace it with an OEM one though.
I'm no Yota snob though. If you asked this on Rising Sun (though even that is in question, as there are only a few truly snobby people on there), you might get a different answer. Just use what you know and are comfortable with.

Toyota head gaskets are worth the extra price. Here is a thread for reference.

When I put in a new thermostat the Napa gasket only has two holes for the bolts VS 4 for the Toyota gasket. A lot of other gaskets are fine to go with aftermarket. If the Toyota gasket is higher quality I won't mind the price.

Thanks for the link. The good news is i only use the top line of the felpro gaskets and they include all the features of OEM Yota Gaskets. It also seems despite the convo that this is an alternative motive to his hg blowing, and it is stated in his first post that he has used both brands and had the same issue. Sorry to hear about your bad run in with napa! The wierd part is thats the same place i got my t-stat housing and it fit perfect.
The worst part about this all is i am known for using Garlock Gasket material from work for most my gaskets :erm:
Just seem to use kits when going in for a major overhaul as its a PITA to make that many gaskets out of garlock in a hurry haha.
