Just got home with our oldest son, Nick, from picking up his first vehicle. Chris found it on Craig's List. Got the 1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport in trade for some tools (25+ year old air compressor, miter saw, skill saw, sawzall), gave the guy an actual dollar to not be lyin' on the bill of sale...and then Nick and Chris proceeded to find 76 cents in the seats on the way home. Chris is convinced he'll find the rest of that dollar - might even make money on the deal. Hopefully Nick's Build Thread will be next...(he's saving like mad - his birthday was Saturday)! It's got a touch of the ugly...but it purrs like a kitten.

Awesome! Chris told me about it when I was over there the other day. I'm glad it all came together!!
I really like those Cherokees. I had a '96 quite a few years ago and still miss it! Great cars....and rigs. :D
Congrats Nick!

He oughta be happy. My first car was a 1976 AMC Gremlin. Purple. With the straight six. What a pile. Kinda wish I still had that car. Paid $100 for it from my dads cousin Delmer. He still owns Freisen Chevrolet in Sutton NE. Dad wouldn't let me buy the mid engine Corvair pickup sittin' next to it. Was only a small block 350, turbo 350, Ford 9 inch with a drive shaft about 12" long. Funny, now that I think about it, Delmer said no too. I would not have ended up dead, no matter what they said.

Oooh, super cool!! But yeah, not so much on the survival rate. He really wants a Wrangler, but he'll have to get through this, and get some experience on road and off, first. Then we'll sell it for more than we paid and move onto a Wrangler. :lmao:
Does anyone know what this means for the rear axle?: Corporate 8.25 Rear Axle

The XJ 8.25 rear axle is a pretty good axle. Better than the D35. At least that's what I remember. :)

September 12th, 2011, 09:24 PM
There's so much you can do with one of those its not even funny. Aftermarket, home brewed fab, junkyards, etc. Ive found more aftermarket parts on those in the yards it's crazy. Don't know who made the bumper, but it fit like a glove, those are WJ knuckles, Teves calipers, drag link and tie rods, HP Dana 30 3.73 gearset to match the wife's S-10 rear end, HP Dana 30 gearset for when it's time for lockers. The red things are Rubicon Express long arms for after I get the axle in with leaves and Off Road Directs S-10 SAS kit to get it set up. Bought an '84 XJ from my sons friend for $500 with a ton done to it. Turned a $900 dollar profit om that one. When I go to the yards I'll keep my eyes open.

Congratulations!!! Awesome first car, and that's some really good trading! I have something for you if you want it; Brody just gave me Heather's stock control arms for her TJ, and TJ and XJ lower control arms are identical, as are TJ LCA front and rear. I really don't need 4 spares, I can give you back 2 LCA and we'll both be set.

Sweet, Nick!
What has a touch of the ugly? The Jeep or Nick?.....Oh...sorry Nick...:D..saw most people were talking about your Jeep!:lmao:
Good rig for you. Just about every junkyard around has a tone of these so finding replacement parts...or after market parts in a yard is not a big deal. My rig before the Yota was a 1991 Cherokee. Minor lift, Ford 150 coils, cheapo junkyard lift, basically, and some other stuff, and it did really nice off road. You also have the benefit of the U Pull about 10 minutes from your house. Worth it to just grab Chris..or Heather...and just wander around the yard to see what you can find. What other people have mentioned is that the parts for those are the same for a really wide range of years.
Happy to answer any questions if I can.

Can you say "Hydroboost". Adapt a '95 Chevy Astro van hydroboost assembly to fit in place of the factory vacuum booster, and walla, ouch that's the windshield. Need to add that to the build threads. Sorry, Pete. Cody, Matt, lets start doing some checking on that.
mattzj98
September 14th, 2011, 10:47 PM
Seatbelts are a good thing. He drove my jeep when I was in the middle of working on it (obviously was going to high country) and breaks were not bled. It required a lot to stop it. That was this ONE time
Popsgarage

Still doesn't explain why you want an XJ.
mattzj98
September 14th, 2011, 10:51 PM
XJs are cheaper to pick up, cheaper to fix up, a lot more aftermarket support and they're small enough to fit tight spots. I also like the boxy look
Popsgarage
September 14th, 2011, 10:55 PM
Cheaper, ok. Aftermarket suppport, yes. 1 zillion made, yes. That's what makes yours so kool. Simple junkyard upgrades can really make them outperform the XJ, though.

Thanks for the make and model tidbit there. This is what I was planning on for Frank (Chris' 74 CJ)the next time I dug into the brakes on it. Of course, things like working calipers would go a long way towards stopping it. Would kind of go hand in hand with the new pads....

We really need to get together one of these weekends and chat. The '95 points straight out, not down like the '96 an ups. Power steering pump off of any '80's diesel Chevy, trans cooler off a '88 to '91 Chevy and you're in business. Bring Frank and Chris and we'll figure it out.

Passed emissions with FLYING colors today - the emissions person even pointed out how low the numbers were. Nick's Cherokee was right after an older Grand Am was on the spinners...with coolant spurting out from under the passenger side of the hood...the tech sitting in the car SAW it, and kept going...by the time he was done, it was still spurting and smoking. Unreal. I can't believe the owner of the car didn't jerk the guy out by the throat....but I digress. Luckily the Cherokee's pass was completely uneventful. Went from emissions to tags...so now Nick's Cherokee is completely legal! Woot! I was sweating it there for a bit...a $1 vehicle with no issues getting tags? Inconceivable!

Frank has a 360 with PS and a PS cooler from a Ford something I grabbed in the junkyard. Calipers are toast, but no big deal as the front axle is a Dane 30 from a Scrambler. XJ calipers should fit fine. Rear is a Ford 9" with drums and the e brake cable stuff missing. PO never hooked it up, so scavenging something from a Ford whatever will work for the e brake. Just your basic time/money thing...
Good to hear that the rig passed with no problems!

HAHA....I must be about the only one on here who hasn't named any rig I have owned. Although it has been called many things over the years, as have other vehicles I have owned, non of them complimentary, none on them has stuck. MF, Pig, SOB....hell, I could go on....the name depends on where I am working on it and the amount of skin I have lost in the process....
I take that back. I named the first car I ever owned...
Kinda like assigning a gender to a vehicle. I mean, what do you do to discover what gender a vehicle is? Are you underneath it, turning wrenches, and bump your head on the vehicle's junk, then go, "Oh, I have a dude vehicle!", or see no junk and assume it is a female rig? Just curious here as I have been under a huge number of different vehicles over the years and have never seen indications of gender. Maybe I am not observant....

Does anyone know what this means for the rear axle?: Corporate 8.25 Rear Axle
That's a pretty good axle, in the same strength range as a Dana 44, Toyota 8" (let the protests begin!!) or GM 10 bolt. It is way better than the d35 and should be reliable with 31-33 inch tires. Lots of stuff available for it too. Unless you blow it up or go really big on tires I'd run it forever.

Well done, guys. Hijack a delicate, impressionable (did I mention delicate?) 17 year old's thread into one about those funny left-handed cigarettes! :lmao:
Honey? You trying to force him into those left-handed cigarettes? :D :p

Never!!!! I haven't seen (or participated) in one of those until this VERY second.

I derive significant entertainment from the ensuing eye rolling.

I say keep the kids away from the lefthanded cigs (I like that) from an early age, then you never ever have to share it with them. :thumb:

You aren't the only one, believe me. Gave all that kind of stuff up a long time ago. Have to pee test to get on almost any big construction job any more. Not worth the hassle.

Dont forget the randoms, and pre-employment and then the onsight randoms and such. One of the joys of working construction is getting paid to pee in a cup haha.

Pops, what i meant by "im one of the few!" is that i haven't even tried anything. No drugs, and no alcohol. (except for an accidental swig of rum and coke when i was younger) I don't know why but I just don't see whats so cool / attractive about laughing at everything, eating a lot, and not being able to stand. The real entertainment is when you get to see the people who do those things try to interact with reality. :lmao:

Never does seem to work out to well. But, hey, he's 21 and paid for his own car and insurance. He may not drive for a while, but he can always ride to work with me.:D

My kid. Proud momma. :)
And the bold part...Chris was there, too, and loved to tell me the story about it. They were working at the shop, and they had drinks in those red plastic cups. Nick's was Coke, my dad's was rum and Coke. Nick accidentally picked up Dad's and took a huge swig, thinking it was his own. He was about 7 at the time. He announced that his Coke was flat. Apparently Dad freaked a little and told Chris "DON'T TELL HEATHER!"
But yeah, Nick's been through the ringer with his (biological) dad's drinking. So stupid.

We were at a restaurant in Florida one time with our daughter, Casey, when she was about 8 or 9. She wanted one of those "fancy drinks with an umbrella". So we orderered her a VIRGIN pina Colada.
EHEM...
A few minutes after the drinks arrived she was nearly passed out in our booth. I asked the waitress what could have gone wrong and she told me the bartender didn't speak english and didn't know what "virgin" meant.:erm::tisktisk:

And look at DrOldUnit....Gee, if it weren't for flashbacks, he wouldn't have a memory...
Thanks, Ralph. Or is it Clete? I have such trouble with names. ;)
Fortunately, my memory is still pretty sharp (though all forks in the road on trails seem to look the same to me). How else could I have a job at a respectable newspaper? Or remember the capital of Mongolia? (Ulan Bator) Or the two previous names of Sri Lanka? (Ceylon and Serendip) Or the number of angels that can dance on the head of a pin? (Seven) :D
(OK, I'm not really sure about the dancing angels.)
