For those new to rock crawling, Four Wheeler magazine did this rather informative summary:
http://www.fourwheeler.com/featuredvehicles/129_1106_how_to_drive_on_rocks_rock_crawling_101/viewall.html
It is a quick read and pretty much covers all the basic stuff.

Thanks! I am going through all the magazines that Java(Paul) dropped off for Stephanie before she gets them and found that. Not a bad write up for a 4x mag.

Slow Down
Instead of pressing the skinny pedal when your rig ceases forward momentum, take a second to think about the situation

That's funny, Jock!
You ever run Ironclads in the winter? There is a really, really long gradual hill on it, something you don't think twice about when there isn't any snow. In the winter, in order to get up it, you have to keep, well, a 'Robyn Inspired' momentum up in order not to stall out with the tires sliding all over the place. And yes, there are a couple of momentum robbing turns thrown in for good measure. At any rate, to get to the top without issues, you have to start way faster than what feels comfortable, and keep nailing the throttle to get up it all the way. Makes for interesting driving, especially when the ass end of your rig wants to go all over the place, there are bumps and ruts, and the trees are close. Quite fun, actually, but it is one of those if you stop, you gotta strap hills...

Never did Ironclads in the winter/snow. Johnny Park was my first snow run, broke trail on it in January 08, there were portions of it with 2 1/2 to 3 feet of snow. I vaguely remember the others, like Red Elephant, Sevenmile, Slaughterhouse, Pole Hill, Pierson Park or MSV, all I remember on those is strapping up everyone every 40 yards or so.
I was talking to Robyn about it last night, skinny pedal is necessary sometimes when it comes to snow runs. I just couldn't resist giving her some crap about that though!

Good info! What I have learned, never be complacent, always be willing to accept you do not know everything about 4 wheeling no matter how much experience you have.

wow I'm glad I read this! I always thought you were supposed to spin the wheels as fast and as often as possible! skinny pedal to the floor! boy was I wrong.. and it says we need to deflate and not overinflate?
I need to learn a lot still
heh, JK :P Good stuff though! :thunb:
Thanks Pete!
