Fall River Rd., St. Mary's/Alice, and surrounding areas suffered a major "blow" with the weekend wind storm. About every 20 feet there are trees blown completely over root structure and all, broken in half, or just limbs laying every which way. I would say we saw about 150 downed trees. Power went out Sat. at 9:30pm, got it back(amazingly enough, considering) Sunday 10:30pm. Wood burning stoves are worth their weight in gold, silver and platinum combined!!!
Including the last 2 pic's of our tree out front, whew, it missed the deck/house, the camping trailer, and the J-20 and log splitter. Some of the root structures are 25 plus feet in diameter and the trees were well over 60 feet tall. Carnage central, Fall River Rd., the brown house had a tree land in the middle of the house, the first pic is the lucky folks, the tree missed there house, but crushed their cars and blocked their garage. Cannot wait to see the trails, willl have to bring my chainsaw along for sure.

Worst wind damage in the 13 years we have lived up here, hopefully no one was killed, have not heard anything yet.

Dang that's incredible. Those people were lucky not to lose their house and maybe get hurt but both cars....

That's a lot of damage. Last time I saw that much tree damage was back in 07 when it snowed 2 feet of wet snow then the wind came up and trees broke all over the place.

Those huge trees that were uprooted remind me of my last trip to Oregon after they had high winds, Redwoods well over 100 years old uprooted like they were twigs. Feel for the folks whose cars and house got hit!

What sucks is that most every tree that was downed was alive, only a few of the huge dead standing fell. Natures way of thinning the trees out too. I need to call my friend with the wind guage over in York Gulch, he lost a wind generator tower years ago to 123 mph winds, hardly any downed trees like now, wierd. It was purely the "wind shears", or gusts, that did the damage, probably around 130-150mph blasts on top of sustained 100+, crazy!
I wish "free" included hauled, cut, split and stacked:lmao:, still easier than paying huge amounts to utility companies:thumb:

Big area in Steamboat called the blowdown area where all the trees in one area were blown down in 1997. Area was simply flattened by a shear wind. Another area, one down near Monument where we had been developing a bunch of climbs in the 90s had some huge aspen right up to the base of the rock. Absolutely beautiful spot. After our first trip down there (no one else had done any routes on these rocks...) we started carry a hammock or two and stringing them between the trees. really sweet and peaceful. We went there one year to do some more new routes and the entire area, which was situated in a very narrow valley, had every aspen blown down...and just in that one spot.
Sad, in a way, but nature is nature. Didn't look at this until this AM. Ditto with what Jonathan and everyone else said.

That is one of the topics the FS touches on during the safety chat, on Adopt-a-Road days. A really wet year will cause otherwise healthy trees to topple.

Labor ain't cheap, that's for sure Paul. But at least the materials free. Sounds like a hell of a lot of no damn fun. Scary wind up in your neck o' the woods for sure.
