Hey how's it going guys? My girlfriend just picked up her Dad's FJ60 (Original owner, 240K miles) Other than the radiator that needs replaced and some tie rods, springs, shocks, some rust, it's in pretty good shape just spent it's life up in the mountains. Can anyone give me a few things that should be looked at? I haven't had any time working one these land yachts yet. I'll have some pictures soon.

Chris and Bruce (EldoradoFJ60) might have some pointers for you.

And Mud is a good resource for all things Land Cruiser.

All these boys should have a wealth of info for ya. Look under make and model links as well.

Check the knuckles first, unless it's been done, you will need to do it soon-ish. The seal between the transfer case and transmission tends to go out , so check that. Next R&R Fluids, vacuum lines, then fix the leaks, that has been the MO on my last two 60s.
Ih8mud has a wealth of info as well as "getting started" info on the sticky section.

Nice, thanks everyone. The seals are real solid throughout, minus the oil pan. There is very little play in the knuckles but I'm sure it's enough to justify a fix. I swapped out a good five feet of vacuum lines this afternoon, still a ton to replace. I'll poke around on mud later on.

Quite a few of us here have had a lot of experience with these, including myself.. (and MPorter...don't forget:D), so if you have questions, simply ask. Like everyone said, ih8temud is a huge source of info. Our Yota Make and Madel links is another. Pirate 4x4 is another.

Watch the vacuum lines and do them one at a time. The Yota (FJ55/60/62) lines are extremely picky about which little ' looks like the plug next to it' plug the lines go into. They are really easy to get jacked up and create other issues. I have replaced (and R&Rd) at least 6 FJ60/62s in the last year and a half. Buy more vacuum line than you think you could possibly need. Add 30%. You may then have enough....:lmao:

Id also recommend the easy stuff like: Plugs, Wires, Cap, Fuel Filter, and give it a good tune up, and like has been said with replacing all the fluids and such. I replaced my transmission fluid and it was like a night and day difference when shifting especially in the cold. Im doing a front axle service sometime this week, and will be sure to take good pictures and attempt to try and provide some sort of write up. If you have any questions just ask.

I've picked up most of the tune up type parts, just want to get in inspected and I'll throw all that stuff on there. Are there any FJ60 specific quirks that need to be addressed?

Worse quirk is the 'mystery wire/fuel pump' problems that are all over ih8temud and everywhere else. You might, at some point, review this so that you can either remedy the situation before it becomes one or at least have a really good idea just what is happening and where to look when your rig starts, then stops randomly. The wires are located behind the driver's side panel on the inside. **** from basic driving and wheeling causes water and mud to get in that area simply because of where Yota stuck the wires.

You may also want to cut an access panel for your fuel pump access at some time. Pretty easy to do, and it will save you dropping the tank to replace it if it goes out.

There are trouble rust areas right around the top of the fenders in the rear where there is a "Gomer" reinforcement. These are also visible looking under the rear wheel wells just over the top of the tire.

You may want to clean the throttle body and IAC if you are tuning it. Clean off the MAP sensor, too. (In the Yota make and model section)

Bruce, Eldorado FJ, has been going through his with a fine tooth comb, so it may be worth your while to look through his build thread on it as he has documented it really well.

Most of this only applies if its a 62 model with the fuel injection. Heres a good thread for you to look through all the common problems and such.

If you are planning on a knuckle job, do you need some company. I am going to be doing a knuckle job as well.

As far as quirks go. Ive owned the 84 FJ60 for just over a year. My biggest issue was replacing all the heater lines. As most of them had rotted out and started leaking won right after another. Other than that i replaced plugs, wires, rotors, thermostat, air cleaner and such. I also replaced the head gasket and all the fluids, and i haven't had any issues or odd quirks yet. The biggest issue so far has been the leaking axle seal. Maybe some of the other more experienced owners will chime in on this.

I had an 86 60 for a few years, loved it. One day at Rampart Range rd I had a big fuel smell and pulled over to check it out... got to the gas cap, loosened it to a huge whoosh of compressed air. Turns out the charcoal canisters in them are prone to clogging, but there is an easy fix / preemptive strike, you can flush it with compressed ait in just a few minutes. I believe it is the center hole you put the air through (after removing it from the vehicle) and it comes out the bottom one, but google it.

Check the 80's section of 'Mud, there are a number of good write-ups there. I think they may even be stickies.

Check the Toyota Make and Model links in our TECH section. I posted some very good front end rebuild stuff there, a lot of the links are stuff posted or appeared on Mud...

Never had a whole lot of experience with FJ60's but on my FJ62 the transfer case is vacuum shift and the solenoid went out. If yours is vacuum (I think it's manual though) that's one thing I would replace. Best $18 I spent so far.

Ive been looking at all the info and such. The main reason i am doing a write up is because i like pictures. And every right i have seen so far has seriously been lacking pictures.

Ive got this and the reassembly video Favorited on my account. I was worried about it because i had never really torn a yota axle down before. Then i saw this video and started laughing at myself for being worried.

That vid if for an 80 so some steps don't apply. Make sure to download the FSM's and follow torque specs, etc.

Check your engine for vacuum leaks. More than likely your intake/exhaust manifold will have a big one towards the firewall. I plan on replacing my exhaust manifold with headers come tax time.

Dont you have to pass emissions? how do you plan on emissions w/ a header?

I'm not sure about your emmission laws. But where I'm at in jeffco it doesn't matter if you have a header or an exhaust manifold. It doesn't affect what comes out. You can even get by with eliminting some of the egr nonsense as long as you still have the valve itself.

And many are equipped with O2 bungs (if applicable), many of them come with CARB exempt stickers stating that they make little or no difference in emissions output. So, as long as it passes, it passes! Emissions places don't usually care, hell most don't even look or know what to look for.
