Does anyone know what size the fill / inspect bolt is on the toyota rear diff (88 4runner ) ? 7/8 was too small , 15 /16 too big so I figured its metric ( it is a toyota after all ) 22 mm is too small 24 mm was too big so I went to the store and found a 23mm ." this should fit like a glove" , right ? WRONG , ITS too small. I hate wrenching:confused: But I hate it LESS on my Chevys:lmao:AT least old Chevys have NORMAL nuts and bolts ****66**** I'm starting to throw **+*%^&*:wrench::wrench: HELP before I break something :D

Think "Chevy" and try a 15/16". I just tried one on the 4 banger rear housing I have and that was the closest fit out of all my junk. I used a 12 point, BTW, and also did the same thing you did. None of my metrics fit either, so I thought what the hell, and tried a standard. I have no idea what it is actually supposed to be. Just be glad it isn't a newer 4 Runner. They use a 10mm Allen head that seems to strip out remarkably easily. Chris' 2005 (or whatever) now has a hefty nut welded on it. It was the only way we could get it out as someone had decided to apply about 125 fp of torque to it...

Hope this helps...

The ones on the rear of my Taco axle, as well as the one on my V6 are all standard metric. Been awhile since I did the 4 banger rear service...and I may very well have tried the metrics then went to anything that fit....Just had the same problem on Jeff's Jeep on the hub nut. "Supposed" to be a 35mm and you can tell when you stuck the 35mm on it, a 34mm was going to be too small and a 36 too big. It got tapped on and off with a hammer with no damaged to the nut...or even any real marks. Go figure. Maybe it is a metric equivalent of a 'Plus P' round...

I was trying to remember what I had to take a file to to make any socket, metric or standard, fit, but it was also a drain/fill plug on someone's diff.

Thats probably whats next if the 12pt doesn't work . If a little filing wont do it then I guess I'LL try welding a normal nut onto it .

Surprising how fast that happens and turns a 'simple' project into a royal PITA. If you end up going with the welded on nut, you will at least get some small pleasure from burning the **** out of it....

I know on Chris', I tried a few different things, finally resorting to the welded on nut. By the time I did that, welding that little ******* on made me feel GOOD...and it broke loose really easily...

I've always used a 24mm with no problems on my old '85 PU and on the current '87 4Runner. It's a Craftsman 12pt socket.

My 24mm didn't work when I tried and I used the 5 and 12 point on the housing I have. Weird, huh? You would think that something that had metric threads would, you know, kinda have a metric head on it. Just to keep things simple....

I had to make some sort of bizarre sized Allen head to fit something on a 2010 Tacoma. The standards wouldn't fit, the metrics wouldn't fit, so I said screw it, got a bigger sized one and carefully ground and filed it to fit. It ended up somewhere between a metric and a standard..It is also stashed away so it doesn't get lost..A SST is an SST...worth big bucks somewhere, right?:lmao:

At any rate, I hope you got it off.

If I had any clue I would put my 2 sense in but I have a Jeep so that does not help you, the only good news I have at the moment is that my Jeep is being put back together now but listen to Brody, he tends to know and if he does not he will make it DA*** :lmao:. Good luck and I hope that works for you.

Mine have all been 24mm. 15/16 should work as mentioned. If you use a 24mm 6 point, it should work fine with less chance of rounding off the corners. Oh, and remember that you don't have to tighten them down too much. 24 ftlbs IIRC.

That is the part that too many people read as "124ftlbs".......Just fought with a Jeep rear diff plug a week or so ago. PO hard torqued that little sucker DOWN! Heat and PB (along with considerable brute force and ignorance) finally got it off..I hate that kind of crap....Oh...it was also an after market unit cleverly designed with a 9/16" Allen head fitting, just the size that so many of us have lying around really handy....
