Some little asshat in a black something today hit my wife's car at 26th and Ingalls today in Edgewater. She's OK! She was heading west and making a left turn (south). Asshat was behind her, and for whatever reason tried to go around her by crossing the double yellow into opposing traffic and directly in her path. The road is wide enough he probably could have done it safely on her passenger side. He had no time to do it due to oncoming traffic and the fact that he was cutting into her turn, and cut back infront of her, screwing up the body and atleast the suspension on her car, the driver's front tire is leaning inward at the top. Asshat then proceeded to flee the scene, but not before she got his plate number (she's really smart, she drove after him all the way to Pierce st with the car all screwed up to get it!!) and now the Edgewater and Wheatridge Police have it, as does Statefarm insurance who will totally go after him or her for the cost of this. Asshat also left a piece of his car at the scene- it's a trim piece, and inside it has the following part numbers:

10335529
4272
RH
TEE

and it says TAB sideways next to all that.
If anyone can tell me what vehicle that goes to I will owe you one in a big way!!

double suck is that that little damage may total the car. I've been the only one to care for it since it had 30,000 miles on it, and it only has 88,000 now. I have every single thing ever done to it written down, it has lots of new parts including drilled and slotted rotors w/ceramic discs, and it runs great. It was going to become my daily driver next month when we bought my wife a new car because it isn't worth selling as it blue books low. I can't buy a daily driver for the value of it that will have the maintainence history or the condition it's in. I hope they fix it!!!

Asshat, if you are reading this by any chance, you should have stopped after you hit my wife. I'm going to eat you.

All that looks fixable Paul unless it got into the frame stuff. And yes, the insurance may very well total it. LaDawn's Escort got totaled and 95% of the damage was the the POS plastic bumper crap. She bought it back for a song and I fixed it no problem. Cheap body panels as well as cheap bumper pieces are available from Certi Fit, kind of the Wally World of car pieces, who have a branch off Peoria and I 70 area. They also have an online or downloadable catalog so you can price junk. Their prices are a fraction of what the dealer charge.

Glad that you wife is OK, Sorry about the car damage.

No luck on the part number search. Looks to be a piece of fender or bumper trim.

Thank you, Pete. I remember the panels from your '10 Tacoma, they looked great. What is the process for buying it back from the insurance? I may just do that.

LaDawn is on the phone..wait a sec..

Quote" You simply tell the insurance company that you want to keep it. They will give you two options: totaling out the car, giving you a check and then towing it away, or, if you decide to keep it, they will tell you how much they will take off the "totaled' amount, and, if you can work that out, let you keep it. There is no hassle with the title as the title never changed hands" End of Quote...

So, I guess that is what she did with the Escort. I was merely the slave labor what did the fixin'. First time I tried to 'fix' a plastic bumper too, and it was doinked like yours. I figured it was already a bit jacked, knew where I could get replacement junk if needed, so why not? I managed to get it back into pretty decent shape using a propane torch and careful application of wet rags...

They will make you an offer as what they are willing to pay for the car as is, if it is in fact totalled, then if you want, you can ask to buy the car back for a price, basically from what they can pay you, or just deduct from what they are giving you depending on the company.. went through this last Jan..

Also, if you are nowhere near certi fit, let me know (my warehouse is right next door to them) and I can find out a few prices and what not, maybe pick something up..

Sorry to hear about the car, glad wife is ok

Royal tip of the hat to her for getting the plate!!

Question: If it gets "totaled" and you buy it back, what happens to your future insurance for that car? Can you get full insurance on it? Liability only? Crazy rates?

I guess it comes down to the individual insurance company and semantics. LaDawn said that we had full coverage on the Escort and it simply remained in place with no changes. It may also have something to do with the actual value of the car. In the case of the Escort, and from what Paul said about his wife's car, the mileage and age of the car may make all the difference. I can't answer that. Soldier77 (Blake) may be able to as he is an insurance agent for Farmer's, I believe.

She likes that, Jim!! I have no idea about the insurance, that is a GREAT question.

Thank you, Jackie. He's in it- I'm going to sue him for my deductable and my rental car, and whatever else comes up. Hoping the Po-Po find him for free, or I'll hire an investigator and let him pay for that as well. It's going to add up fast and I am NOT eating it.

End up needing a very good process server who is very reasonably priced, get a hold of me or LaDawn, We got hooked up with this guy a number of years ago through my friend Bren, the guy I do a lot of woodwork stuff with. He is now busier working for about 4-6 lawyers that LaDawn knows..

Rates shouldn't go much higher, she wasn't at fault obviously, mine never went up.

No problem on the parts man, like I said, I'm right next door so let me know and I can stop by there any time..

You can always get full coverage unless its a jeep like mine, where they refused to insure it (lol) so I got liability only on that..

It WILL however, have a salvage title IF it gets totalled and u buy back.. only draw back

Just an advice, check ur ground first!.. the lady I got in a head on (roll over) with didn't have much money and her insurance coverage sucked.. 25k for personal injuries, I racked up over 65k and yes, had to pay out of pocket. I was going to sue the lady but since she didn't have any money, she was going to file bankrupcy and I wouldn't have seen any of it so I dropped it, ans my lawyer just went after the full 25k..

Good for her for getting the plate number! That definitely helps. :)

Glad she's okay too!

SO glad Jahna's okay. We did the total/salvage title thing on Chris' 240 after he rear-ended someone several years ago. Afterwards, we only had liability on it, but I think it was because that's all we were worried about/obligated with that car.

P.S. You can do a records search at the DMV, or hire a PI to do it, if the po po aren't getting results for you fast enough...I think last time I had it done it was something like $33.

So glad your wife was not hurt. With that plate, I hope Mr. Asshat gets picked up post haste. The car is easier to fix than a human and from what people are saying here, you have some options.

Also thank GOD your wife is OK as you might know I had an accident about a month ago and its no fun not at all. I hope you dont have to have it totaled and then buy it back but if they do total it you should be able to buy it back pretty cheep at least with most insurance company's. I will let you know tomorrow if I can figure out that part number and what it goes to.

No license, no insurance, no habla.

I'm glad she's OK.

no habla is no problem, not stopping is lame. you're probably right about the license / insurance. Found out that this is a minimum of 12 points if he/she does have a license...

You're dealing with much higher numbers than I am ($65,000.00 out of pocket?? You've got GOOD pockets!! :thumb:), I'll be taking this person to small claims court, and the best thing that can happen is they don't show. I will forego the $$ collection process after getting a judgement and simply sit on the judgement. At some point that person will want to buy a car, open a credit card, go to school, buy a house, rent a house, give birth in a hospital, anything involving credit, and then they will be begging me to take their money. Which I won't, not right away. I will let this hang over them as long as possible, and then let them pay me. or not. It's not the $$- my deductible is $500, the rental car is probably going to be a few hundered more, I'd be surprised if I hit $1000.00. It's just returning the screw.

Thank you, Erik!! The guy at the collision shop is way cool too and I'm bringing the piece there tommorow, he says he can find almost any body part. I rememeber your accident, I've been following the thread. I'd be very upset if it was the Jeep and not the Taurus. I'm glad yours worked out so well, look forward to seeing your Jeep v2.0!

The numbers were due to to personal injuries which I am still haunted with.. 80mph head on isn't fun.. the rolling isn't fun.. losing a jeep and 30k that I've had in it wasn't fun either. Got 1800 back from them for a 98 laredo haha what a joke..

Good to hear your car isn't going to be totalled most likely.. and yeah, good call on not taking the money right away. I doubt he will show up so u get it by default.. bite the asshat back!

Keep us updated!

If for some reason the insurance totals it, they will likely "tell" you that you have to go to the state and get a salvage title. Honestly, why would you though? With a clean title, this is still going to show on a CarFax report now, but other than that, don't make any changes. There are also restrictions on age, etc that apply to salvage. I think the car has to be less than 7 years old. Don't quote me on that.

Glad the wife is OK and hope that it all turns out for the best!

It's over. We got his name and address (on Google street view you can see the car that hit her in front of his house, it's not exactly a "sweet ride") and I saw his FB page, some youtube stuff of his, and after getting to know him a little I think taking him to court would be a total waste of time. I don't think he has 2 pennies to rub together let alone my deductible and rental car, and just doesn't seem like someone I want to spend any time dealing with on any level. I don't mean to insult him, I sort of feel sorry for him based on what I've seen, hope he gets it together someday. I'm sick of dealing with this crap anyway, it's almost worth the $800.00-ish just to put it to bed.

Civil disputes suck!!! I would also advise, after your post, to let the dead dog lay, and hope for the best for this clown, no insults Paul his life is his doing. The law should take his vehicle, if no insurance and a hit and run, he should be doing time.
