I know a few of us have iPads and would like to know what apps you've found useful off-road. I use Motion-X GPS Drive on the pavement which I have found is better than my built-in outdated GPS. I also have Motion-X GPS HD designed for off pavement use but have yet to use it on the trail. A recent (?) update allows for uploading GPX files which is pretty cool if it works. It seems to provide less actual guidance but until I try it I'll reserve judgement. I just uploaded some GPX files and it looks pretty good. Anyone using this or another GPS app?

Nope. I use AT&T so it's only as good as they are in any given area. Downloading maps ahead of the time is the work-around.

I was thinking of getting one of these for this summer for navigation...do they work even when there is no cell phone reception off of a satellite?

You should get one. All the cool kids have them now. The 3G model is the only one with a GPS chip, so even if you don't plan to get service for it, that's the one you want for off road and you can download maps ahead of time, like Chris said.

I don't think I answered your question. I have a 3G because the WiFi version doesn't have a GPS chipset. I have had good luck with it overall excepting a massive stretch of Arizona where life of any kind was scarce. The usual GPS issue of line of sight is always an issue but otherwise it works as well as my old Garmin + the screen size is great. I don't know if I'd recommend buying one just to use as a GPS. For the money you could get a top of the line Garmin and have change. I use mine as a computer so it was an easy choice, the GPS is just a plus for me.

Edit: Stephen beat me to it. :thumb:

In that case buy one!
