View Full Version : Carnage Canyon

mattzj98
March 28th, 2012, 07:05 PM
Well, it's official, we are running Carnage Canyon AFTER running Chinaman Gulch. That way we get a day of wheeling before we go and break down ! ( Nothing like that to be expected, just body damage)

We may or may not stay over night in BV depending on how long chinaman takes. Worst case scenario we get going and camp over night till the sun is out :)

Either way, going to be a fun day or two. It will be a true test for mine and a few of the new rigs on here that need some a$$ whoopin! :)

See you guys on the trail! :)

TrailDamage : http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=178

Note: expect to get damaged, need a winch and minimum of 35s to get past. Bring plenty of water and some gear to stay over night if neccessery. Trailers and some extra cash recommended!

Ha! You are quite good at that. I think I'll better serve the group as a photographer/video person, rather than a screaming wussie, yes? :lmao:

mattzj98
March 28th, 2012, 08:07 PM
Thanks for bringing my diapers....I'll be able to use them to wipe your eyes after you bounce off a rock and scartch the grocery getter.

I am afraid to put a scratch on it.. I am afraid that next time I pull up to Park Meadows or Cherry Creek mall, people won't believe that I call those parking lots "home"

Glad you have a buffer

You might want to re-read the vehicle requirements!
It is 39" tires now!

Yeah, 35s may work, but you may also want to bring a sturdy bag for the differential pieces......And bring a spill kit, which should have been included in that list I sent you:

Some advice on Carnage from someone who has run it in a few different rigs, if you don't mind:

Bring spare parts
Bring tow straps and tree savers
Bring a snatch block
Bring tools
Bring diff oil
Bring oil spill clean up stuff

Allow time to walk the trail
If you have difficulties on the entrance obstacle, bail. It only gets harder and the worse part is the exit.
If you break ****, expect to winch out/recover through the exit as there are going to be people behind you and no room to pass to go back down the trail....and it is a one way trail.
Allow about 6-8 hours to do the trail the first time.

March 29th, 2012, 11:53 AM
Yea if it is now saying 39's I'm out but if u guys run it on Sunday I will come to watch and help back when my jeep went through it only suggested 35's so ill come but I will be there to help

BigE
March 29th, 2012, 12:47 PM
This is true so I'm at least game to come up if u guys run it Sunday it u run it Saturday then I'm out have to work. Unless someone knows of a job I can get that gives me the weekend off and at least pays the bills :D so the Saturday u guys run cinnamon let me know if u are waiting for Sunday and.if.u do I would be game to come.up Sunday morning and.meet up with.u guys or if.u come.back and then head back up let me know

mattzj98
March 29th, 2012, 01:04 PM
I don't think we are going to do cinnamon, not sure if its same direction. Chinaman gulch on the other hand.. haha

And yeah, 39s are BS, a guy locked front and back on 33s has done it. Pick. A right lane. I am picking up diff cover for the back prior to going though. If I blow up these axles, next step is Rockwells.. go figure

mattzj98
March 29th, 2012, 04:08 PM
I feel like people like to blow it all out of proportions.. its a hard trail, being smart gets you a long way

mattzj98
March 29th, 2012, 05:02 PM
You have the rig to compensate! =P

Molley
March 30th, 2012, 10:24 PM
I personally wouldn't care if the sign said "Tank" as the minimum required to give it a shot, I'd still be game!
'''''''''''' good one chris scott ,,,,,,,, last time MOLLEY went throu , she hated that under cut ledge and the exit had that big slab rock more toward the middle of hill .everyone winched out exit. can remember if it was fun or not ? but i cant remember ... wait what was i saying ???

mattzj98
March 30th, 2012, 10:30 PM
If it said "tank" then you have your requirements cover..

A guy I know (and some of you probably know too) ran Carnage 4-5 years ago in his stock FSB on 31's. I'm sure the trail has changed a lot since. He didn't care about body damage. And its a good thing, because he got a lot of it...

Ya can do carnage on 35's two lockers and a winch pretty easy but it's very likely you will take body damage.
Did it twice last year. Hardest part is the v notch the exit could be bypassed on the left side when I was there last

pancake
April 10th, 2012, 06:18 PM
I have ran Carnage several times...only broke a front 35 spline chrome dana 60 axel shaft.....as for body damage to my full size rig...well you can see from my photos it was a lot:rolleyes:

Picking the right line and taking your time and pulling cable when needed will get you a long way.

I wish I was in town...I would be in

Alec Im not sure...It looks like under the cross member

Popsgarage
April 11th, 2012, 11:01 PM
Could be the rear output shaft seal on the trans or the front input shaft seal on the transfer case. Neither is to difficult.

I would but i have test these next two weeks

xaza
April 13th, 2012, 07:24 PM
you need to take it to the car wash, wash the entire front underside, especially the crossmember. It traps oil like crazy. Drive it home and check it right away, should be able to find the leak easily enough then. If it is a slow leak you may be looking for just a little droplet ready to drip. Also could be the rear main seal which is common for our XJ's. That is right where the engine mates to the transmission. If you find the leak but don't know what it is, tell us where and what color, might be able to help more.

Lady driving that XJ drives better than 95% of the guys I know who are "badass wheelers".......

You guys running Carnage might want to take some time and watch the lines the good drivers took though the obstacles.

With the rigs you listed and no problems my guess would be no less than 4 hrs from the entrance to exit of Carnage cuz I know you'll all be stopping and taking pictures every foot:D j/k. I think IIRC shortest run was 1 1/2 hours taking our time, longest for me was this year actually, took 5 hrs or so cuz I blew up the rear r/p half way thru the trail  Got drug thru what the locked front couldn't handle and winched the exit.

I realize these got screwed up due to the upgrade and apparently when I "fixed" the RSVP it created another thread to add to the confusion. I hope to get it straightened out soon but in the meantime people who are going on either Carnage or Chinamen's should RSVP now.

Understand that completely. You don't even have to ask where it came from or try to explain it. I heed dreams and intuition a lot. Never try to rationalize them. That is one of the reasons I am probably still around and more or less intact after 40+ years of doing dangerous sports. A large number of my friends and people I know who do similar sports are no longer around.....
