View Full Version : Stripping brown church roof rack

I tried grinding it off and it just melts and clogs up my grinding wheel. Tried jasco stripper and it did not even penetrate the coating. I have several rusty areas so plan on stripping the entire thing.

Put the stripper on it and torch it. Don't breath the fumes. It sounds like you are dealing with a powder coating of some kind, and, where powder coatings have their issues, sticking to what they actually stick to isn't one of them. This happens to be the only way I have found that works for getting hard coatings like that off. I suggested using a flammable stripper because anything else that is flammable is just going to evaporate too fast. On any areas that remain after the coating gets brittle enough to grind/sand off, just use a propane torch and work the areas that are left to get the same results.
Just what I would do......

Good advice. It is not a powder, more along the lines of a plastic coat.

Try a wire wheel?

That is next. My only concern is the friction will heat up the plastic and sent it flying. Going to try this tomorrow and see how it goes.

TRY A SAND PLASTER. Good old Harbor Freight has a few for pretty cheap.

I tried a method offered up on EXPO. Heat gun. I scored the plastic and heated it up to pliable and it just peels off.

I noticed how the coating failed at the welds. I read somewhere that the coating at the welds dont expand and contract with the metal. Thats why it cracks and fails at the joints. Your better off just painting it.

That's the plan Justin! I already have POR 15.

I was gonna suggest a flamethrower but Pete's approach is probably safer! :lmao:

HAHA...a man after my own heart!
I just used the stripper/torch it technique on some powder coated a rusted (under the powder coat, of course) Jeep bumper brackets that Don wanted me to save. I dumped the brackets in muriatic acid for a day or so and what was left, I lit up. After that they cleaned up nicely.

My method, albeit slow, involves way less fumes.

Stripped it down heating the coating

Necessary to wire wheel and hammer off the built up rust under that worthless coating. Painted with POR 15.

very nice. Funny how some of the simplest tasks have the ability to turn into a major undertaking.

Thanks! That compressor is completely trashed. Need somewhere to recycle it.
