(Kind of not a planning thread, more of a thought process thread, but I digress...) We have a friend that lives in Bayfield, near Durango. She moved there from Loveland in the early '00s. We have been promising to visit her since...'01 or '02 or so. She's also got a friend down there whose husband competed one of the races at the King of Hammers this year in a really modified TJ. Anyway, I'd like to plan a trip down there, and have NO idea where the wheeling's at. Who's got experience wheeling in the Colorado portion of the four corners area?? TIA for any suggestions!

Telluride; Black Bear Pass and Imogene Pass. :thumb: I don't know of anything that would challenge a KOH TJ...

I have a number of touristy yet pretty fun destinations I could point you to, just not wheeling. Lots of ruins and fun stuff to see. I took Scout and her friend on a road trip last year which included Siverton, Durango, the actual Four Corners and some ruins in New Mexico. All in three days.
Arch Canyon is near Blanding Utah and I hear it is open to wheeling. If I am mistaken on that particular trail, I believe there are others in the area.

The heart of 4x4 stuff is about 2 hours away from bayfield, towards silverton. Don't waste time going to the 4 Corners "monument", They commercialized it and charge an entrance fee now. Blanding UT is about 3 hrs from Bayfield. You could take your jeep up laplata canyon, which is about 15 minutes outside of durango. There's also some wheeling right outside of pagosa springs, which is about 35 min from bayfield.

Choke Cherry is located in Farmington. It's landscape is identical to Moab- I've never been as I heard it tends to be pretty gnarly. Thats about an hour from Bayfield.

If you're looking to do stuff around the silverton area you should check out the Ouray and Alpine Loop threads in this section

I liked going to the Four Corners. It was campy fun. I suppose it depends on what you want to do.

Chokecherry is a pretty cool area, but instead of doing trails like you do in Moab, it is mostly just driving from obstacle to obstacle. When I did it I was on 35s and locked in both ends with a 75.1 crawl ratio and felt like my equipment was pretty inadequate for the area. Was fun though. I'll see if I can find a few pics to post.
