I want to carry some extra gas on longer trips and want to do something aside from the steel cans. Anyone have anything cool they'd recommend?

There are some pretty cool flat and thin ones I saw on someones truck at the High Country event. They are from this forum.

This link is for water cans. If I recall correctly gas cans have to be red.

The gas cans you are referring to are probably the RotoPax, which Pictaker has on his Tacoma. Both High Country 4x4 and Farris Survival carry them locally. A very good (though a bit expensive) multi mount system which also allows for "stacking" cans.

Fuel Cans : Gas Pack : Gasoline Containers : RotopaX.com (http://www.rotopax.com/)

Daystar has come out with the Cam Can, but these may be a bit hard to find as they are pretty new:

Cheap plastic 5 gallon for me or steel 5 gallon. Whatever I have handy....

I have been planning on having the rotopax mounted to my roof rack.

those expedition one cans are sweet, but the website says they can't sell them in the US. Thanks everyone for all the info and links, I'll go through them after work today. :thumb:

Do they actually HAVE to be red? or is that just a recommended thing?

I guess my question is that can a 'water' jug hold gas and be ok?

can a 'water' jug hold gas and be ok?I tried that once and the gas ate through the plastic of the water can... Different plastics I suppose

I am reevaluating my choice, my rig eats too much fuel for rotopax, I would have to spend a fortune compared to the plastic 5 gallon containers. 2 of those will get me a lot further. Now to figure out a good mounting solution.

Good to know, that could be an expensive mistake at $3.64 a gallon ;)

I use the Wedco or Nato style. They can be found but you'll have to do some searching. They do not leak, and the spouts fit snugly. I had some metal ones with a screw-top and they leaked. I have some cheap walmart plastic ones and they leak as well. These IMO are worth the hassle to find.

I recently looked into getting some gas cans also. I found that the NATO cans are somewhat hard to come by because of the C.A.R.B certification. Not allowed to sell in the USA. Its a bunch of BS if you ask me, the spout is really the only differance. I did find some at the local Army surplus store (Brodway & Hampton) but the quality was questionable, IMO. If any of you find the good ones let us know where you got them, Maybe a mass buy would yield some good results???

I use metal ones too, wedco, B&S, or something along that line. Picked mine up at Grainger.

They are fine to sell in the US just not California, and since California is such a huge base most companies choose to comply with CARB so they don't have to make different models.

Here is a quick ebay search. $50 a piece is about what I would expect to pay for a new one.

nato | eBay (http://motors.shop.ebay.com/i.html?_nkw=nato&_sacat=&_odkw=wedco&_osacat=0&bkBtn=&_trksid=p4506.m270.l1313)

The key is to get the ones that use the lever lock and not the screw top. And get a good quality spout as well. Cheap ones will leak.

The NATO style are the only ones I will use. Good solid metal, won't leak. They are meant to mount sideways underneath a Unimog or Pinzgauer. They typically run about $50 each used now. I bought mine years ago and hold on to them like they are gold.

I carry 2 RotoPacs. I like them as they are thin and stackable plus you get all the gas out unlike others that leave a little in it.
