Gross Reservoir / FS 359.1 and Moon Gulch, Saturday August 4, 2012

Gross Reservoir is a beautiful area and the trails go right to the reservoir at the end. Moon Gulch is pretty close by and has fun trails and some old mining stuff.

CB Channel 4

Meet at the trailhead for FS 359.1 at 10:00 am. Here's a map, basically you get to 68 either from the Boulder side, or you can take 72 west to 97 north to 68 east, then make a right on 359.1.

here's the FS page: http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/arp/r...28368&actid=34 (http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/arp/recreation/recarea/?recid=28368&actid=34)

After that it's a quick run over to 119 and Moon Gulch. Moon Gulch Road is a West turn off 119 just below Moffet (the road for Rollins Pass East and Jenny Creek).

here's a map of it:

and here's some directions, and a link to a thread with some corrections for it.

found this, it's the Shafthouse that is at the end of the Moon Gulch run. I'm not sure what road he starts on, but I think it's 119:

I'm planning on it, with a guest or two.

Please confirm the trailhead location. It should be the "destination" point on this google map route (starting in Boulder):

that is it! There is a street sign at Pine Glade Road just south of 68, but no sign at 68 (unless something has changed)- since you're coming from Boulder, if you see it you've gone too far. IIRC it loops back to 68 anyway if you want to turn there. I have a picture of the intersection from last time I was there, you can see the real estate sign and the street signs, those might help

You may want to come in via 132/ Magnolia, but I'm not positive it makes a difference. When you come down Lakeshore drive there is something kind of lame; where it curves north on the map, you'll get to a point where there is a recommended turn-around and FS signs about a gate. One small sign says it's public access, the rest suggest you to stop and turn around. Go past that, and then the gate itself is set up to look like no access, but it is public access. There are also warnings about lack of maintainance and impending doom... I think the locals have tried to discourage it's use. :D

Is Jim's map correct? I'll be coming up 119

Yep, but I'm not sure about the Lakeshore drive route, although I'm pretty sure it goes through. I have not gone that way, so don't trust me on it!! From 119 just turn on Magnolia / 132.

You're making me nervous re Lakeshore drive. I have not processed that road but via google satellite images it looks to be a well used (many houses & driveways) road - paved to around the reservoir road then graded soil up from there. That's the route Google is suggesting but routing via Magnolia is close to the same time, map point to map point.

While Lakeshore seems decent to me, would you recommend I choose the Magnolia route?

I'm pretty sure lakeshore drive goes through- we were in a car when I saw it so we did turn around, with my Jeep I'd have gone ahead. I just wanted to give you the heads up that it LOOKS like you can't go through due to signage, not due to the road.

K, will do. I have an 0445# and my plan is to head south on Foothills Parkway to Baseline then head west on Baseline, going straight west and up. I can give a head's up when we roll through downtown Longmont and again when I hit some stop light (no wind noise) in Boulder.

I'm hoping to come in from Westminster...will have to really look and print stuff out when I get home to figure out how to get there. I'll leave plenty early to get there on time, so if I'm not there...I'm either way too lost to to make it, or something came up.

Sounds fun but I have to visit 90 year old parents tomorrow.

Ha. I just decoded your transmission, captain. Yes, that's the right number.

There's a Safeway on the corner of Foothills and Baseline if you need to stop for anything. There's also a shopping center at Broadway and Baseline with an Einstein Bagels, Coffee shop etc. that we could meet at as well.

Take 72 west to 97 north- 97 is shaped like a Y with the two ends meeting up with 72, the single end on 132. I missed the first fork but turned on the second one, they are both two-ways, so it's no problem. Just a little sharp! 97 only runs between 72 and 132, so take it up and make a right (east) on 132. You'll pass Lazy Z road, then you have the choice to turn right on Pine Glade rd and follow it to 68, or turn right on the next road after it- pic of the intersection posted above- which is 68. From there you can't miss the trailhead, it's just a few minutes down the road.

I'll shoot to meet at the shopping center on the SEC of Baseline & Broadway (see attached image). Time may well be tight as my guests are likely going to show up to get moving at 8:15am. GMaps states 1h 15m from my door to that parking lot. That parking lot to trailhead it says is 33 minutes.

I e-mailed my guests to say let's plan on leaving my place at 8am which would work smoothly (though I might not know if they received the message until it's time to move out of my place in the AM).

I can call you when I get moving in the morning and we can work it out if I'll met you there or not. You might end up getting to the trailhead a bit ahead of me if I leave at 8:15am.

My guests confirmed an 8AM departure from Fort Collins. All should be good for time to meet at the shopping center. I'll give you a call when I get moving Max.

Jeep's packed and mostly ready to roll.

GPS is being loaded up now.

Weather looks GREAT (top and door's are already removed).

Great you have directions.

If you wish, it looks like Max and I will meet at the SE corner shopping center a post or two above from me about 9:15am.

Any last minute "in's", the CB will be on.
