I know there was some discussion in the past about code readers and such, but this is interesting info no matter how you get your codes out of the system:

First digit structure is as follows:
Pxxxx for powertrain
Bxxxx for body
Cxxxx for chassis
Uxxxx for future systems

Second digit structure is:
P0xxx Government required codes
P1xxx Manufacturer codes for additional emission system function; not required but reported to the government

Third digit structure is:
Px1xx measurement of air and fuel
Px2xx measurement of air and fuel
Px3xx ignition system
Px4xx additional emission control
Px5xx speed and idle regulation
Px6xx computer and output signals
Px7xx transmission
Px8xx transmission
Px9xx control modules, input and output signals

The fourth and fifth digits designate the individual components and systems.

To mix things up more... one can look into connecting a smartphone / tablet to the system!

I know that you can connect a laptop with the right software and read all sorts of engine performance data. Pretty slick as I learn more about it.

I use this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Super-Mini-ELM327-V1-5-OBDII-OBD2-Interface-Bluetooth-Auto-Diagnostic-Scanner-/190734370103?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2c68a78537 plugged into the OBDII port on my Jeep and this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.prowl.torque running on an old smart phone I had laying around. It gives me real time engine info.

Tim, any idea if that OBDII bluetooth scanner attachment would work on an OBDI (93 Wrangler) system?

I am guessing it wouldn't work. Info from Wikipedia says the following "The data link connector and its position are not standardized, nor is the data protocol." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On-board_diagnostics

Yeah, the older OBDI info is really limited.
