This is pretty cool. Most everyone knows this, but if you don't, the Dana 35 in the rear of a Jeep has axleshafts that are held in by C-clips near the differential, and when the clips break the shaft and tire fall off the vehicle.

Over on the Explorer forum, we were all clowning on this show when it aired. "Shoulda had an Ford 8.8 (Explorer) axle in there!" But I guess it has c-clips too....
And speaking of which, if anyone is looking to convert their Dana 35 to an 8.8, there's a guy in Parker that does the conversion. I don't know what he charges, but he does several a month. Let me know if anyone is interested and I can get the contact info.

the 8.8 is c-clips, but sooo much beefier. that is a great swap, but if I was considering it right now I'd hit up hypoid for that commanchee 44. IINM it's a bolt in for a YJ or an XJ to replace the d35, I'm kinda surprised noone has grabbed it.

Interesting video. That info is in chapter 22 of the Army Field Manual:

Thanks for the plug, Paul!
The MJ axle still needs fab work to bolt on an XJ or TJ, I don't know if it will bolt on a YJ. For all the spring under axles, including the 8.8, you need to weld the appropriate mounts to go spring over, or use coils. With the XJ/MJ D-44, you won't need to buy wheel spacers, unlike the 8.8.
As as for the C-Clip axles, Google "c-clip eliminator kit," you'll find solutions for the D-35, 8.8, and more...

You indicate it's bad but my experience was great. I can't search the forum without joining but I did find this in the seller feedback area:

I've heard Josh's name quite a few times over the years, both good and bad. All I can say is the former master fabricator of FR4x4 was a guy you could hear great and terrible things about, depending on who you were talking to. I'd probably use the grain of salt technique...
