View Full Version : Never had so much trouble with a water pump

Well I finally found the slow coolant leak it was my water pump. So I was thinking 50 bucks later and a good night of wrenching I would be good to go, well I am about an hour in and still don't have the pump off. Unlike every other one I have every done where you just take the fan off bolt of the pump and install in reverse this 2.8 V-6 decided to take me for a ride. So first every bolt is a different size, not just length but there where 3 different sized head on bolts of almost all different lengths. So I made a holder out of cardboard to keep the bolts in the right place. Well then I find out some of the bolts are under the power steering pump mounts so I have to remove that and that is where I stand at.

I have to remove the pulley from the pump to get at the last bolt and the pulley is pressed on so now I have to find a puller here in town (hopefully a loaner other wise I will be visiting Harbor freight tomorrow). So that I can take all this crap off. And hopefully not mess up my timing at the same time because as I remove the pump it removes part of my timing cover and my book says something about the timing tension or so I am over joyed. I hope once I get that pump off things go a little faster.

This process is really making me consider the 4.3 conversion over the 3.4 and going to a different platform altogether.

Did you google for a different procedure? Sometimes there are amazing tricks that you would never think of that can make the process much easier!

I just searched for it and it sounds like it is a PITA. You are apparently going to be replacing all the other parts on the front of the engine.

for this last bolt are you able to get to it at all? with anything and start undoing it??? or not at all

I stared to take it out but it hits the pulley and stops. But a guy on my Isuzu form told me I can take the bracket off with the pump still attached. But now I am finding out that I may have to redo my timing cover as well. So now I am debating about what parts in there I may want to replace because at this point if I need to get in here again it's new engine time lol.

oh i was going to say if u can start it and its the last one can you just back it out some and take the pump off at the same time and slowly work both out at the same time??? and ya that far it seems would be real good to look closely at everything

That's the way I usually am but I don't want to touch my timing chain or anything to do with it. I can bolt off and bolt on parts and adjust things here and there but I don't want to create an even bigger project, plus I do need to get this thing back on the road this weekend. So my days this week are classes all day and then wrenching on this.

Does the timing chain last the life of the engine on these? If so, then leave it alone. If it is like the Toyota 22r and 22re, they go about 100,000-150,000 miles before needing a chain. That is the time to do the entire job. The chain probably isn't much more work if it may need it.

Don't know but I am at about 160,000 on this one so I will check it out.

P.s. if they go around 200 that could be my excuse to get my bigger motor in a couple of years lol

Yeah, if they generally go 200 or longer, and the chances of you reaching that anytime soon are nil, then may be best to leave it alone. All a matter of how much work and $ it would be. Don't skimp on the chain parts if you decide to do it. The aftermarket local parts store stuff for the Toyota only goes 20-30k miles. Such a disappointment for a 15 hour job.

Well the pump is off. I just have to finish some cleaning and get the whole thing back together. Oh adn guess what I had one of my Torx bolts strip out on me so I had fun attempting to drill and extracted it with no luck, so I finally squared it off with my Dremel and put my big adjustable wrench on it and yanked it out.

So hopfully I can get a new bolt and get it up and running tomorrow.

Guess which one stripped out!

This is not a bad trick if you have the room for locking pliers or an adjustable wrench around the bolt

My new right angle drill to get on the bolt and clear the radiator, from Harbor Freight for $40. Its a Chicago Electric, actually doesn't seem like a bad drill

Ahhh, the 2.8 liter GM crap. They make it fun, for sure.

ctracy5
January 23rd, 2013, 07:22 AM
Oh yeah, well if I had known that all that crap had to come off from the beginning and did that first before I tried to go around them to get at the water pump (like most engines) it would have gone much easier. I normally like to take off as little as possible and work around stuff (don't know why it almost always bite me in the butt) instead of taking unnecessary parts off so that was the wrong approach to this one.

Make sure you clean out the bolt holes and add a tad of anti sieze to your bolts. Makes for a easy water pump replacement next time.

Wow what a PITA. I hate torx, Jeep put two on the top of the tranny on the XJ and it seems to always be a problem.

X2 on that! not to mention the 3ft extension and wobbler you need to reach them

not to mention the 3ft extension and wobbler you need to reach them

I do not know the thinking behind that decision. First thing I did, once I got them out, went to ACE and bought some reg. bolts to replace the torx.

It might be hard to replace all of the bolts for the trooper, but I would def. look into replacing the torx bolts. It would make it easier if you ever have to do it again.

Had way to much school work and actual work to get it done. I still need to get the timing chain cover off and clean all that up and put it back to tether if my studio class dosent give me a crap ton work this weekend I will get it done on Saturday.

YAY!!! Got the trooper fired up tonight. She is all back together and no leaks or surprises.

Took forever to get all of the old gasket off! With A razor blade and parts cleaner finally scrapped it all off.

I hate how they never come with new studs so you always have to swap the old ones

Used the old reliable double nut trick to get the studs out

Solid axle !!
Just sayin.

But then I would do my "cool" wheel stands :D.

My goal for the trooper is a nice dual purpose ride, I want to balance on and off road performance. After the lift about all I really plan on doing is completing my armor include a decent winch, an aussie locker in the front, some larger tires (will have to see how much room I have once the lift is on I know it will fit 33"s easy but I will see if I can fit some superswamper 34 x 10.5 x 15)and maybe Limited slip in the back (the only locker available for the rear is the ARB air locker and I am not paying $1300 for it). When I get the money and room I want to do a more serious rig, possibly a samurai because they are fun and fairly cheap to work on, probably put a Geo tracker body on just for laughs.
