View Full Version : Brad's bumper build

Brad (ColoDisco) has enlisted me to build him a front bumper for his rig. Picked up some steel today and will hopefully be getting started real soon!
:pics:
Yea yea, man you guys are pushy! (beat you to it)
I was going to snap some pics of the steel tonight for you picture hungry savages, but I came home to find some of my pregnant goats delivering, so the pics didnt happen. Thought I would start this thread anyways to get a placeholder for when progress happens (that way I actually remember to post some teaser pics for Brad).
This is what Brad would like me to build for him

Here is your new bumper Brad, ready to go for you. (Some assembly required, I will provide instructions :D)
And you dont get the angle iron, thats for my new trailer ramps!

Great looking bumper! I see rounded corners, are you planning that and how do you do it? Trying to decide what type of bumper I want to make...
Chris
January 24th, 2013, 08:02 PM
Is the photo an ARB?
scout man
January 24th, 2013, 08:24 PM
Planning to do the rounded corner assuming Brad wants it that way. I would cut the top and bottom with the correct curve in it, then heat the vertical piece till its plyable and slowly bend it around the curve, tack welding as you go.

Looks like it will be a nice bumper!
Brad

Not a ARB. It doesn't stick out as far in front as the ARB. I want to keep it tight to the body to preserve approach angle. May have a little adjustment to add fog lights.

Here is the start of your bumper Brad. I left it significantly deeper than it needs to be so I can cut it down to perfection next time your rig is here. So dont worry, its not as deep as it looks!

Sweet! Birth 4new goats and started the bumper? You get a whole new respect from me Steve!

January 26th, 2013, 11:19 PM
yup! Was hoping to make it even further, but I got worn out! Yesterday was actually busier, since I worked 10 hours, then took the dog on a 2.5 mile run, THEN had to deliver 2 babies. I felt very accomplished that day!

Here you go Brad, this is where she sits at the moment. Ill probably do a few more hours on it tonight. I told you in a PM it would be 20" between the verticals, its actually 22". you can decide when you see it in person if you want to squeeze 3 lights in there or just 2. But we can deal with that down the road. Planning to extend the verticals and have them wrap under the bumper as well, just havent come up with a plan that I like. Trying to create a bit of a ramp to get you to your tires if you are against a ledge, while not creating a big hook to get stuck on as we discussed while you were here. Might finish that tonight, or I might wait till I can see it on the rig. We will see. I am rather indecisive at the moment (largely why I took a break!) Anyways, here she is!

January 28th, 2013, 09:34 PM
yea, I was going to send you a pm about that. Would definitely like to test fit it by saturday. If you are available any night this week we could do that as well. There are a few things I would like to move forward with, but am hesitant to do so without seeing it on the rig first. Would like to pop off your current bumper (which shouldnt take long at all), and get this lined up into place and cut off the excess on the rear till it sits at the depth we like, then build the mount itself, which also shouldnt take to long. I think a couple hours or so will get me where I can move forward with the rest of it. Saturday would be just fine, or if we can do sooner would be great.
Brad
January 28th, 2013, 09:54 PM
I will see what I can do about sooner. The earliest I could get down there would be 6pm due to work and traffic.

January 28th, 2013, 10:17 PM
thats fine with me. Preferably not tomorrow since its supposed to be cold and crappy, but the rest of the week looks better. I have lights.

Sounds good. Not a big deal if it has to wait till saturday, dont feel pressured.
Did a little more tonight then ran out of weld wire, so I had to stop. Thoughts?
(I can plate between the two bottom slides if you like, we can discuss that when you see it in person.)

Had a great day with Steve! I will let him fill in the details. I have to say Steve is amazing to work with and is doing a excellent job fabbing a combination of a couple different designs per my request and his expertise.

February 2nd, 2013, 08:26 PM
Thanks Brad!
We spent the day fabbing the attachment mounts that bolt to his frame, which included taking the bumper on and off about 15 times. (also the bracket pictured above). Here are some shots in its final resting place though! Still need to fab the 2 pieces of tubing that protect the headlights, cut fog light holes, and do some finish work, then its ready for paint!
Edit: and of course the hole for the winch cable. Details.

Me too! The benefit Brad got from having my build this is that it is built to exactly what he wanted. By doing this he actually mantained the same (if not better) approach angle from the factory bumper. All of the aftermarket ones put the winch out in front of the grill, but we were able to tuck it inside the grill so that almost the entire winch is inside the body lines.

I like that part. When I built the bumper for my truck I got the 8274 tucked as far in as possible. Had to cut out the grille to make it happen since it is such a large winch. It was for my previous truck, and it saved about 3 inches off the front to keep a decent approach angle.

Getting close. Here is a look of where she sits right now. Got the fog light holes cut and mounts made today, and finished the mounting brackets for the bumper. Also did a bunch of clean up grinding/sanding. I had an issue getting the tube bent the other day, so I have someone else willing to let me use their bender. Hopefully getting that done monday night. Bumper looks nice a tame from the front, but Brad said he wanted a tough bumper and didnt care about weight, so here is also a behind the scenes look at the reinforcement on the back. Nothing is going to hurt this thing! In fact, if I did it again I would actually probably leave a couple pieces off, but I am fairly happy with the indestructability of this bumper. Should get the finishing touches done monday, tube bent monday night, welded on tuesday, and paint tuesday. Should be ready for you wednesday or thursday Brad!!

First let me premise this post by saying this was my fault. After looking at the bumper for a couple weeks I felt the brush bar was too high, it bugged me. Steve being the gracious person he is and a really great welder accommodated my wishes and lowered the brush guard down (I insisted on paying for this as I accepted the bumper the way it was). Without further ado, my bumper 2.0:
