I'm starting a chronicle of the things that catch my eye, while I enjoy the affordable hobby. Mods, feel free to move this thread.

I saw a winch at the junkyard today.

Sean, I didn't know you were looking or any more '57 to '60 parts. I don't know if this has any good parts, but it sure has a bunch of levers! :)

I usually give Jonathan (Popsgarage) a call when I go yard hopping. If I wait until I get there, I won't forget what he's looking for. ;)

He might be ready for a junkyard run himself. :)

When I was on the phone with Jon, he was interested in getting out again. Myself, I'd want to start early, in Aurora.

I didn't look close enough to tell if the winch is hyraulic, or shaft driven.

CS79bronco
January 31st, 2013, 09:49 AM
That should be a PTO winch. There's a PTO lever in the cab, a brake lever & a F-N-R lever on the side, or might be clutch lever by the brake?

I got a better look yesterday: The windshield is toast, the back window is now gone, I took some close up pictures of the grill.

The levers on the winch work just as Charles described, no detail pic of those. The PTO does drive a shaft, which drives a chain:

http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee120/Hypoid/Parts%20Dog/PARTSDOG531a.jpg

I have to admit I did not pay much attention to the details of this winch when I first saw it. I was looking at the capstans on the end, wondering when and why you would use those.

There were a few other things that caught my eye.

Home built (?) bumper on a 'Sploder, made from 3/16" steel sheet.

I also saw some aftermarket springs on an XJ. :)

Epic day at the junkyard!

Some of the people who have been on for awhile, might remember when my little truck got rear-ended.

http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee120/Hypoid/Ranger/UPLOADS411.jpg

Last week, I saw the same year Ranger, with the same green paint, and the same (stupid!) purple pin stripe, with a really nice bed. After thinking about it for a week, and having a voucher in my pocket, I went back today. I called Popsgarage, who brought Squshiee1, we got permission to swap the beds just inside the gate. As we put the new bed on the truck, the back did not set down. I was thinking the tweaked bumper must be hanging it up...NOPE! The bed was hanging at least a foot past the bumper. I was so stoked about finding a nice bed with matching paint, that I forgot that my little Ranger is a short bed. I did not even think about the length. It was an EPIC, DUH! on my part.

Maybe I'll stay home tomorrow.:smokin:

:lmao:Unplug the wire harness, remove three screws that hold the filler neck, remove the six Torx bolts that hold the bed to the frame, pull the tailgate to lighten it. We actually swapped the tail lights over at the yard, but yeah, I mighta done this before.

No camera today.

I went back top look at that mid-70s truck I mentioned. It has a D-44 front, non flat top knuckles. It has 12-bolt rear, with the axles pulled out a couple inches, and the carrier sitting in the dirt, and a lunchbox locker sitting in the dirt. I don't get that!

Someone else saw the Old Man Emu springs under a Cherokee. They managed to get one leaf pack off. I expect they'll be back with a sawzall for the other pack.

In the new sets, I saw a '62, CJ-5. It's almost old as me, but, I think I've aged better. :)

I also saw a wrecked Ram 3500 4x4. It had a Cummins badge, but the engine bay was empty. It had the front and rear drive axles, they were huge. I walked away.

I saw a Ranger with a short bed, same body lines. It had a couple ripples in the sheet metal; it was white. I'll think about it....

All Xploder are disc rear..No, first gens (early 90s) have drums out back. Honestly, I don't know when rear disc brakes became standard equipment.

What really sparks my interest in the 'Sploders, is the leather seats with lumbar support. I think it's the '95 version that I like best. Mmmmmmmm, leather! :)

If anyone spots the plastic cover that goes over this shift boot, and you have 10 min to snag it for me, I'll pay you triple what it cost to get it out of the yard and a small storage fee. I am converting my 91 Ranger from having an electronic transfer case, to a manual, and this is one of the only pieces i am missing. It can be found in 89-90 Bronco II, 90-91 Rangers, and 91-94 Exploders. I'll keep up my own search, but if you happen across it please let me know.

It is the plastic trim piece that goes around the shift boot, however on the vehicles with a 5 spd it goes around both the transmission and the tcase. This is what is makes it harder to find, as so many rigs of this era had automatics, or were equipped with the electric tcase.

Jon, I had to do some reading on the interwebz, but the '80s axles from a 4-door are said to be slightly narrower than an XJ axle (58-1/2"). That sounds screwy, but it is what I remembered from other people's projects as well.

Mike I hope you got that headliner for your Cherokee, and surely you added the horseshoes to your collection. Thank you very much for all the looking you did today. The carb is close but not the same. That one has a bowl vent line & the mechanical vent on top, the top casting is different, choke is not electric on mine. I found my note where I had ordered the carb kit & the tag on mine was D6UA-1175-AA. It is either different because it's a truck carb or maybe only a newer model. Any yards you didn't make it to today?

Hypoid

Any yards you didn't make it to today? One that I know will be open, the web site is not listing any new sets.

There is another yard in Commerce City, but I don't know if they are open on Sunday.

If you come up, bring the original carb for comparison. I never asked, what is broken on your carb?

CS79bronco
April 27th, 2013, 09:40 PM
Primary throttle shaft is bent, piece missing from the base casting where the idle solenoid is held on with one screw so the mounting plate won't stay in place, bent linkages, bent tube on the base for big vacuum line (flat spot), choke mounting plate that holds the plastic cover over the spring bent badly. That's all I remember without going down to the garage & looking again.

That's all I remember without going down to the garage & looking again.I took more pictures of this one. The throttle pate is in good condition, I'm just not sure where the throttle solonoid would mount.

The idle solenoid mounts on the drivers side right in front of where the cable & kickdown go. In the top pic(bottom view) there is a screwhead just above the return springs. On the carb in your pic there is a small flat bracket held on by that screw. Same screw holds my idle solenoid, on a much bigger bracket. Just to the left of that screw is the end of the returnspring, behind the spring end lying in a notch is a little ear of the cast base, which has a hole in it for a "tit" (for want of a better word) to fit into which with the screw & another "tit" in a hole above the screw hold the bracket securely in place. The little ear on my carb is mostly gone so not very good for holding the bracket.

I went out and took the bracket off the carb, scraped some grime away, took a picture. Those dimples fore and aft of the screw hole are very pronounced, as is the step in the casting. I'd say they are index points.

Thanks for the pic Mike, I couldn't tell about those dimples from the other pics. So, that baseplate with the throttle shafts will work, I should be able to hammer out the solenoid bracket & reuse it. Mine doesn't have the electric choke, but should be able to swap that out so the center section should work. Can't tell from the pics if there is a difference in the top section but it should work also. Just have to clean it up & switch around a few parts, not too bad. If it just doesn't leak gas between the top & center sections like the old one did. Looks like I need to make a trip to Golden pretty soon.

Thanks for the auto-save feature. The above was mostly written after mid-night last night, my laptop locked up, so I turned it off & went nitey-nite.

No pics, but picked up some hydroboost lines and an AC delete blower assembly for the wife's '94 S-10 Blazer and a grill for her '89 S-10 pickup she managed to destroy when she ran the tow strap through it to tow it home when the sprung hub on the clutch disc gave up the ghost on the hi-way last week. Hydroboost lines were mostly a bolt in deal. Screw the fittings into the appropriate locations and tweak a line or two for better routing and that was done. The AC delete is blower box needed the resistors for the fan relocated so I cut a hole closer to the end so the plug from the fan control would reach and welded the old hole shut with the piece I cut out. I then drilled the face of the blower box for the MSD ignition box and primered and painted it. Couple more steps done. Waiting for her to have a day off so she can learn how to fix the grill. Thanks for the heads up Mikey!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How was the hunting???

Pretty good- I snagged a wiper arm to replace my worn out one, the tiedown bracket for my spare tire mount, a V8 Grand Cherokee tierod assembly to upgrade my steering, and a GC transfer case skid to retrofit on. The skid was a bear- the weldnut on one of the bolts broke off inside the crossmember. I had to drop the entire member and fish a set of pliers inside it to hold the nut.

I was hoping to find a pre 97 XJ metal tank skid and some factory XJ towhooks and brackets, but no such luck.

Hitch installation is simple. I used to install hitches for Uhaul for a couple years. I am pretty sure I have a full hardware kit for a hitch if you happen across one missing hardware, will check in a bit. Would be willing to help if you wanted to bring it over. Gas tank skid makes it a bit more of a PITA but easier with a couple hands to hold hitch and skid. Can help with wiring if you need that too. Cherokee requires a convertor box...might have one of those too. I got some extra hitch covers that you would be helping me to take too :D

Ebay is your best bet on those. Salvage yards are only really interested in insurance quality parts that they can make a quick turnaround on. With new insurance standards setting the total loss threshold at only 65% of FMV, this shifts their area of interest into standard vehicles less than 5 years old, or higher dollar vehicles less than 10 years old.

I'm way overdue, not much time for play this spring.

I saw this full size Jeep in the lot some time back, it is set in the yard now. Turns out it is a '69, not the axles people want to build.

There was an XJ with a 3.5" RE lift. It was pretty worn, had rubber bushings in the control arms, "add-a-leaf" on the back, and the RE 1600 track bar. I was not inspired to run home for the tool box.

I also saw a Ford "bump-side" pick up. It was a four wheel drive model F-250. It had a 460 in the engine bay, and a D-44 with open knuckles under the front. Anyone who bleeds blue knows these were not offered by the factory back then. It's likely somebody still tells stories about that truck they used to have.

Not sure when I'll get back out. Until then, happy hunting!

It is not that nice, I did not take a picture of the passenger side for a reason. Besides, the Chinese will turn it into something useful, like bicycles and swing sets.

I did think of you Jarold. I saw a straight, '87 BII with nice paint.

You came out much better than I did. Now I have a new problem with my Bronco. Starter won't disengage. Don't know if it is the starter or the Solenoid.

The StRanger
March 29th, 2014, 10:05 PM
Probably the Solenoid ..

Cr33p3r
March 29th, 2014, 10:10 PM
My experience with that is its usually the Bendix spring has broke while engaged, although a few times I've seen the solenoids stuck causing the same issue. Tap on the solenoid with a screw driver handle if it disengages the starter replace the solenoid if nothing happens it's the starter.

javaman34
March 29th, 2014, 10:12 PM
You have to remember, it is a Ford. The solenoid isn't on the starter itself. Mine is on the inside of the passenger fender.

Yesterday at LKQ made a good score I picked up a 5 gallon air tank, linear actuator, Keyed tailgate switch and some various other parts. I'll tell you it was a lot of fun trying to pull parts with something stuck in your eye and only being able to use one eye to get this done. Val had a good time watching me work LOL. No camera this time, I walked into the N Denver U-PULL to see a guy loading the last of an RE long arm set into his wheelbarrow. He said he came in for a drive shaft, spent another two hours unbolting the long arms. His clothes were packed with dirt and grease, he was grimy and sweaty, and grinning from ear to ear. Good man! :)

The 62 Scout didn't come from the factory with 44's to my knowledge. Not with the little 152 engine they had. Suppose they could have been swapped from a later year or a Scout II.

To start, EVERYONE wants a Dana-60 high pinion front axle. :D

I have seen people post up wishing they had some widget. Then, I took pictures and gave specific instructions on where to find that widget. Two months later, said widget goes to the crusher.

I don't mind helping people out. If they won't help themselves out, I'm not so interested in giving a lot of my own time.

In short, remember to have some fun while you are there. :thumb:
