View Full Version : Time for new tires???

I noticed this on the driver-front tire. They only have 22,300 miles on them, but is it time to look at new ones or should I just rotate this one to the spare tire position for now? I'd have a really difficult time changing a flat by myself. Not sure I could lift one any more!:lmao:

This is inevitable if you are taking it off road. The rocks will do this to any tire eventually. Personally I would just keep running it as long as it isnt cutting into the actually integrity of the tire. Looks like its just on that one lug, which really wont effect the functionality of the tire.

I'd move it to the spare Jackie.

My 30" BFG A/Ts chunked a lot. My 33" tires of the same haven't chunked yet that I've seen anyway.
In short, I wouldn't worry about it. But rotating the spare into normal use is a good idea.

I'd move it to the spare Jackie.Ditto. You don't want it to fail at highway speeds.

I'm taking it in to the dealer tomorrow for oil change and tire rotation. I'll see if I can talk to a tech about it... but better safe than sorry.

Yeah, rotate the spare on assuming it is the same size/brand. This isn't a big deal, but just better to leave it as a spare if possible.
Jackie
March 1st, 2013, 08:12 PM
Yeah - these are the original tires, so they all match and have been equally rotated from the start. I'll see what the tech has to say tomorrow when he/she can get a good look at it.

If you decide to pop for new tires, keep the take-offs! There are a lot of people who would run those tires if you put them up for sale.
I appreciate your desire to feel safe about your equipment, and you should! Just don't short yourself by giving them to the dealership.

:thumb: Thanks Mike. I plan to get a lot more wear out of them. No intention to let them go to the dealer. I'd give them away for a song here first! I just don't want a flat on China Wall next week!:p

As a tech and a 4 wheeler I would toss that on the spare. One good rock will rip the rest of that lug off.

I should hope not! I wonder if there is a way to fix it (???) I'd like to hold out at least another year before I invest in new ones. I don't know if these were 30K mile tires or if they were rated higher than that. They are the 32" BFG M/T. Anyone here know? If they were only rated at 30K, then I'll expect to buy new ones next year.

Got it back from the Jeep dealer Saturday afternoon. The job was to rotate the tires making sure to put "chunky" on the tailgate and the do the typical oil change and inspection. $80 later (they sold me on the 4-pack of oil changes) and I drove it home only to have the "low tire pressure" light come on...
I usually run my tires at about 37 lbs. I found three of the tires on the pavement at about 34 lbs. The tire now in the spare position was at 37 and the passenger rear was at 14.
I looked over the paperwork, and the only note they made was that I should probably change my air filter next time I'm in.
They marked off my windshield wiper blades (front and back) as fine. However, my rear one wasn't even plugged in. It wasn't working at all...:erm:
The engine coolant reservoir is just above the "MIN" line (aren't they supposed to top that off???)
I found another tire with a chunked-out lug as well. While not their fault, it would have been nice of them to point it out to me if they saw it.
This is the second time I have taken it to that dealer for a tire rotation and had to come home and air them up myself. I'll be calling the manager in the morning.

If you don't want the tires to chunk, stay on the pavement. Otherwise, the missing chunks shouldn't be an issue.
Jackie

stay on the pavement
Not gonna happen.....!

Air pressure- yes they should set it to factory spec or the pressure you request.
Wiper blades- definitely yes! I up sell them all the time. Would definitely have checked them.
engine coolant- Yes! And they should have looked for a leak. Noting it was low so you know to keep a eye on it.
Additional tire lug? Probably not. I rotate tires every day and unless something like pressure gives me a clue, I don't do a full tread inspection.
Hit them with all your complaints and have a "what would you like us to do?" Answer ready. Maybe toss in another 4 pack of lof 's on top of the ones you purchased. Make a penalty or nothing will change at that dealer.

Agreed. All my serv get lof, air & blades, Even with rotates I dont check full tire tread
As for the TPM Light.... Ther is no reson for any car to leave without Proper air presures on full washer fluid !!!!

I called the Jeep dealership today and asked speak to the manager of the service department. A guy answers the phone with "This is Phil, how can I help you?"
ME: Hi Phil, can I speak to the manager of the department, please?"
PHIL: "What part of that didn't you get?.... I AM the manager."
ME: Oh! Sorry. No offense intended."
Phil: "None taken. I just wanted to keep the conversation light."
ME: "..................OH.............., Phil.... This conversation will not be light.............."
It went on from there. Parts of it were pretty funny! I'll be bringing the the Jeep back in this week and my dear new friend, Phil will be doing the work personally!
He went from "a-hole to buttercup pretty quick"!

Hahaha! I'm taking Thursday off work to bring the Jeep back in and to do some other crap that needs to get done.
I called my new friend "Buttercup" to schedule an appointment, but he said I don't need one. He said he will drop what he is doing and personally go check/service my Jeep as needed and also offered to replace my sketchy connector for the rear windshield wiper for free. I really didn't expect anything for free. All I wanted in the first place was honest work for honest pay.
At any rate, if he can make it right. I'm OK with it (even though he pissed me off with his comment: "What part of that didn't you get?....")
He shall be known as "Buttercup" for evermore! :D

They have a customer satisfaction fund for that. I get paid by the dealer to do small things for customers all the time.

:woot: Happy 5th birthday to my Jeep!
Just got back from the dealership. They were very apologetic for the questionable service I received and had 3 different guys taking a look at it. They fixed my rear wiper connector. Then they re-filled the windshield wiper fluid with a full gallon. I told them not to do it, but they didn't believe me until it started leaking all over their floor!
So it turns out they have to pull the whole washer tank and mounting plate to fix it, and according to what I heard them saying it involves some major work because it requires removing the ABS and lot of other stuff that went way over my head. They all complained that it was lousy design. Then they pulled my paperwork to see if I am still covered under warranty. It's been 5 years TO THE DAY since I had this Jeep delivered. March 7, 2008. They wrote up the paperwork as if they were going to do the service today, but in reality, it won't be done until next Tuesday as they don't have the parts. They even offered to give me a rental car for free while they do the work.
So this is a pretty good ending to my crappy story except I'm leaking another gallon of washer fluid all over my driveway again!

Sooooo.... Brought the Jeep in this morning to leave it and have them install the new parts for the Windshield washer stuff (turns out it was the pump).
They also did the required inspection for my lifetime warranty on the drive train.
I picked it up and drove it home. I tried to wash the windshield only to find that their was NO fluid in it. OK..... I figured that was lazy workmanship, but I had a new jug of it in my garage so I figured I'd just pour it in and call it a day....
About halfway through emptying the jug, I realized that as I was filling it from the top, it was once again draining all over my driveway. Back to the dealership I went...
They found a hose not connected. :bang:
I'm usually a very patient person, but if I find any washer fluid on my driveway in the morning, I'm going to blow a gasket!!!

My Explorer is fairly easy to work on mechanically. Any computer or sensor related issue ups the ante of course. I also have a 2004 Saturn VUE that has been very reliable with only wear and tear items in its 100k miles. It does have 2 computers- an ECU and a BCM that could really screw me if they ever go out. My 2012 Escape looks to be easy to work on, but haven't had the opportunity yet- and I better not since it's less than a year old. I changed the oil in it once so far.

Please. If you're too lazy to peel off the old sticker, could you at least apply the new one over the old one???

Jackie you must be a angel ,I would have all ready blown a gasket and contacted the regional manger about "Buttercup" and his posse. LOL sorry you did not make the china wall run, it was cold but whelling a easier trail in the snow does add excitement. but it was fun, let him know you are posting this on a forum maybe, the local dealer in the springs I get parts from always says bring it in and let are professionals look at it for you, LOL . see you this summer on a run :)

Crazy Jackie, just crazy! The term 'Stealership' really hits home! I actually have an issue with our Jeep too, when I remote start it, there is a small puddle of washer fluid on the ground. I have looked at things, all looks ok/good other than the fluid on the ground. Next 'free service' at the dealership I plan on bringing this issue up.
Edit: the stickers are a waste, because my Jeeps computer system reminds me when it is time for servicing right?
Edit: the first thing I did when I bought mine was remove the emmissions sticker and the sevice reminder sticker :)

sucks about your dealer experience, its never to late to learn how to wrench on your own rig :)
As far as that tire goes, as long as no cords are showing, with that much tread left i would not hesitate to use it.
