Here is a good shot of my broken axle shaft from this past weekend. Nice clean break, and look at the spiralling on those splines!!

On a related note, I now have a new shifter knob in my truck! (pics tomorrow)

already done! made it into a shifter knob today. No pic though, it was dark.

I am willing to bet that twist was a long time coming. In fact, before the anniversary run I had been hearing a bit of a grinding in that corner, and actually pulled that axle shaft out before the run because I thought it was the bearing going bad. Didnt actually look at the splines though, as I just pulled it far enough to see the bearing, it was fine, so I put it back together. I guess I should have pulled it all the way out! Not sure why a twist in the splines would cause a grinding though, unless it was just forcing extra pressure onto the bearing

Nice way to recycle Steve! I love seeing metal twisted or bent, not neccesarily while on trail though :).

Very nice, I like the shifer knob idea. I am glad you were able to get it fixed on the trail.

yea, the shifters in the scout are kind of stuck with what they are, as they are all rather specialty
