Has anybody at FR4x4 used Spray in Bed Liner on the exterior of a vehicle? I am thinking about using this on my interior and exterior of my CJ, and wondering if anybody has any feedback.

Brody's rig had it, it looked like the inside of a truck bed! Rough and flat, but badass in it's way. I'd say do it, I liked it. I plan to do the interior of my Jeep with it down the road.

I believe bed liner stays flammable after drying so might want to consider that and be careful anywhere near exhaust, but I have no personal experience.

I did Raptor Liner on mine and it was a pretty painless process. I believe Brody used that spray on Duplicolor stuff you get at Autoparts stores.

The cool thing about Raptor Liner is 1) Is tintable, so you can make it whatever color you want and 2) It sprays on with an included gun and dries much harder then the duplicolor stuff. Here are a few pictures of mine...

These pictures are right after I got done spraying and after taking the masking off. I didn't do hardly any surface prep, and just mixed and sprayed. It comes with a spray gun that attaches directly to the product bottle, and you just add a couple ounces of urethane paint in whatever color you want it to be, shake it to mix, and spray. They also have a black version. You can see a few spots where its rougher then the rest, and that is where I oversprayed and it ran a bit. When it fully cured it was a darker blue then these pictures, but its still kinda bright. The tintable raptor liner is kind of a light grey color, so if you get paint for it go much darker then you actually want it to be. When I sprayed it, it came out like a pastel cornflower blue color and I was really worried, but its just a nice but relatively bright blue now.

You can find the stuff online for about $100 a kit, which comes with 4 bottles and the spray gun. They had it in stock at Painters Supply down on Santa Fe for about $140 if you don't wanna wait. I got my tint paint there, and just picked a nice flat dark blue. I only used 3 bottles to cover my cab, so larger vehicle should easily be able to do the exterior with 4. Any time someone asks me how it holds up, I get my keys out and start aggresively poking and scraping at it. You can see a few little scratches when I do it, but no gouges or chips and usually a wipe with a wet cloth makes it go away again. Definitely takes worries of Colorado Pin Striping away.

Here is the link to the place I got mine... http://www.tptools.com/U-Pol-Raptor-Spray-On-Truck-Bed-Liner-Kit,2600.html . Looks like they went up a bit in price, but still the cheapest place to get it. If anyone wants to check it out in person, my truck is sitting in the parking lot at the Club Workshop at the moment.

Thanks for the info. Josh! I was thinking about painting the jeep but then thought about the Colo. pin stripe issue. I do not want to go through all of the labor just to have it scratch. That is why I am thinking the bed liner. It will also dampen the noise inside the jeep. I am not sure about the flammable aspect, but it is far away from my exhaust, that I am not worried. I know that Mythbusters used it to blast proof a wall, so I think it is pretty tough stuff. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JOXrpCLCJg

yea, they use Line-x to coat plates on bullet proof vests now. Its tought stuff. (it is not bullet proof though... just to clarify! :D)

Nay (?) that used to be on the forum had a green spray on bed liner on his rig and it was pretty sweet looking IMO.

Ardent, one of the hefty brothers from www.heftyfabworks.com which is also a local business in the springs, sprayed his entire landcruiser in it, and it did turn out pretty nice. Had made me seriously consider doing it to my FJ until i decided to change build directions on it. Here is the link, some of the pictures are missing, and some are still there, but you get the idea.

I looked up Als Liner, Herculiner, and Rhino Liner, and all of those one say that they are no longer flammable about after drying. So at least there are a few given safe ones. I didnt bother checking any others however.

I ordered the bed liner off Ebay. Think I will tape and shoot on Sat. Anybody feel like getting dirty? That FJ looks sweet, I am just going to go black, my wheels, top, etc.. are black so it should be pretty sweet. I am going to do the inside pan and exterior. I will take some pics and post them up. I have cut out and patched the few spots of rust. I have also removed the lights, winch, bumpers, top, and roll bar to make it easy to spray/tape.

I received the bed liner on Friday, prepped and sprayed the jeep on Saturday. It looks great, I am working on getting everything re-assembled. I have taken some pics, will post them when I have final pics. The jeep looks great and the liner xtreme product worked great. You defiantly want to cover up your skin, because it gets everywhere and does not come off oops

That is all I have for now, I am working on getting everything re-installed and will add those pics later. This process was pretty fun and easy. You have to mix the product 3 parts A, 1 part thinner, 1 part activator, and 1 part ground up rubber. It is like spraying tar, so you have to have the PSI up to get it to shoot. The gun that came with the kit worked pretty well, a tip, if it is not spraying, loosen the canister. We started out mixing smaller batches, because we were worried about the 35 min. pot life. We figured out quickly, to make a large batch and move fast. It went a lot quicker with the large batch mixed up. I would not want to spray this in a garage, it has a pungent smell and gets everywhere. Cover up your skin, hair, and hands, it is really hard to get off. Acatone seems to work well to remove the stuff.

No, I looked at it and did not want to spend the extra money on it. I used the blue painters tape and pulled it right after we were done shooting. Did not have a problem with the tape, It helped that I pulled everything I could, so tape was min. It also helped that I did the whole jeep, so really no lines needed.

Thanks, I spent a lot of time on sanding the jeep. The person before, painted it with shaker cans. When I hit the paint with my power washer, most of it blew off, they had done no prep work. They did not use tape, so all of the crome, etc... was oversprayed. That is what is taking the time right now, cleaning the blue overspray off of the parts.

So I finished up the jeep this weekend, in between a wedding and mothers day. I got the tail lights installed and wired, which turned out to be a big project on a 40 yr old jeep. The wiring was hacked, taped, and broken. Nothing a few hours, soldering iron, heat shrink, and new wire would not fix. I used a test lead and now everything is working, sealed up, and protected. It was pretty bad and looked like a rats nest, now nice and clean. I cleaned and painted the spare wheel; it was silver and did not match. I also removed, cleaned, and painted the center section of the steering wheel. It had some surface rust and looked pretty bad. All of the windows back in and installed the doors. All I can say it looks amazing and I am very happy with they way it turned out. I need to order the front turn signal lenses; I broke the originals, cleaning them. I have some pics that I will post. :2thumbup:

excellent job! Have you or are you going to use a UV resistant top coat? I'm thinking my 4Runner might get this treatment. I've done the lower body with herculiner. But recently I found where the previous owner used bondo without properly addressing the rust underneath. So I'm going to have to address this. And the truck needs to be repainted anyways.

I would recommend you do this to your 4runner, I have been impressed with the results.

Phenomenal job my friend CJ looks great! Looks good and is super tough what else do you need?:) IMO there's no mod you can do to a CJ to ruin it!

I agree CJ's are classic. Hard to believe it is 40 years old.

Great job! Having only done the bottom I can only imagine the hours you have spent. From time to time I play with the idea of doing all of my Rover, but always opt not to.

It did take a lot longer than I was thinking it would.

It is all done, now it is time to sell it. All the turn signal lenses look great. I have not put the warn 8274 back on, I am thinking about holding on to that or maybe use it as a bartering chip.

Reasonable consideration to hang onto it would be good.

Selling it?!?!?

Yea, Since I bought the XJ, my plan is to sell the CJ. I do not need two to pay insurance and plates on. I tried last season, but everybody that looked at it, did not like the paint. I am not sure why you would want nice paint on a jeep, but they did. So that is why I did the bed liner.

No bids in the last part of the auction and the price did not hit my reserve, so the jeep did not sell. I now have it on Craigslist, so we will see what happens. http://denver.craigslist.org/cto/3868834421.html

I think that it is, especially with the ARB air lockers. But we will see, I want to sell it but not give it away. I do not think $6,500 is out of range, especially because it is so clean.

The add looks good and the pictures look good. I saw one blurry one and also I would aim you lights. They look weird being pointed all over the place. Also people love to see Jeeps with the tops off. You may want to try that and consider changing the price to 6499 or 6495. It just sounds less expensive.

Thanks for the points, I know the lights always get messed up when I put on and remove the fitted cover. I noticed it to in the Pics, but at that point, was too late.

Personally the AD is almost to in depth with the pictures. Honestly i think just the mention of death wobble, whether its there or not, my scare some people right off the get go, if they don't know a lot about rigs.

If it was my ad, i would put the "best" 8 picutres in the CL viewer. And would rearrange the way your description is on the page. I have found most people don't like scrolling through a hundred pics to find the details of the rig, no matter how nice the pictures are.

I would start off with something very generic as:

Up for sale is my 1973 Jeep CJ-5. It runs great, and can be used as a daily driver, as well as a capable off road rig. I have preformed all maintenance on the rig as needed. It has X amount of lift, x body armor and has ARB lockers front and rear. It has x motor, x drive train, x gearing all in good working order. More pic can be found at the bottom of the page or this x link.

Contact Info Here, and at the very end of the ad.

Then break your maintenance section up some, I know its a large list, but its all right on top of one another and kind of makes it all run together. Maybe something like this

Engine-

Drivetrain-

Suspension-

Armor-

Interior-

Exterior-

Definitely a cheaper option than a regular paint job. looks good too !! Anyone know if there is an absured weight added to the vehicle ??

carpenle
August 5th, 2013, 10:12 AM
Three gallons of weight, so I would guess about 25 lbs. across the whole jeep.

So the CJ is gone, I traded it for a 1995 Harley Springer Softail. Sad to see it go, but the bike will be enjoyed.
