(or “Rocks for a Dollar”)
--
I sent this message to family and friends and thought folks here would get a kick out of it
--
I walked out to my car, parked in the street, to move it up near the garage. I noticed a young boy standing on the corner (of the dead end street with not much traffic) holding a 1’x1’ sign high over his head. No way could I see that anything was on the sign but it was evident from the pose that something was being advertised. I gave a neighborly wave and got into the car – giving a look at the spare change holder.
With several coins available I didn’t just drive back up to the garage and rather pulled out onto the street. The boy started to run back to “the store” as I drove towards a group of kids. I asked if he was selling something and he said “rocks” (bummer, `was hoping for some lemonade on this warm day). I pulled aside and the group of four youngsters had a few boxes of nice rocks out on display. How much, I asked. “One dollar for the small rocks and two dollars for those large ones” came the reply. Convenient pricing with a group of four.
I gave the rocks a review, selected one, and handed over four quarters. The kids were quite happy but a fifth, an older kid on the sidewalk, exclaimed “I don’t believe you sold a ROCK for a dollar” and started walking away. As I returned to the car, the kids, reinforced that “yes, you can sell a rock for a dollar” started walking back to the corner – giving me copious waves of thanks. Curiously, the older, skeptical boy was walking right with the group. Perhaps the price just went up to $1.25 & $2.50.
