so some of you heard that my dads jeep blew the motor this past weekend and we have finally got the oil pan off to see what the damage is ......there is much damage. first off the no 1 rod broke and blew 3 holes in the oil pan so we knew that was already bad but we found out what the real problem was and what locked the motor. looks like no3 and no 4 rods might be bent or tweaked but hard to tell with out ripping it all the way apart. and the no 6 rod also broke and jammed itself into the block and locked the motor along with the no 6 piston head twisting in the cylinder. and for anyone that wants to know this is the factory engine with 22,xxx miles :frown:

Wow, that's a lot of fail, particularly with such low mileage.

May 25th, 2013, 10:58 PM
wow thats destructive. Amazed it did that with such few miles on it.

May 25th, 2013, 10:59 PM
oh and it is hard to see in the pic but when the no 6 rod hit the block it also hit the bottom lip of the piston head and broke a chunk of that off

May 25th, 2013, 11:18 PM

Hypoid
May 25th, 2013, 11:22 PM
OUCH!!!
Two questions:
What were the operating conditions when everything went to hell?
Is there evidence of pre-existing problems in those con-rods?

What were the operating conditions when everything went to hell?
I was wondering the same thing.
Was this Dave Pritchett's Jeep?

They just don't make 'em to run with water inside. Must have gotten in more than just #1.

Good morning, To answer Chris's question, "yes" this was Dave Pritchetts Jeep. I have been driving and working on it for the last year and a half. (I was at the anniversary run spring with it, in the snow :) ) I Installed a terra-low T-case and new clutch and rebuilt the transmission. The day I took out the motor I was driving in 2 gear in low range ( with terra-low, it is not fast) , the splash of the fan blades just worked out to somehow get directed into the stock, yes stock air intake assy. ( I did have a K&N filter). For now, I am looking at replacing the motor with a Straight six, gasoline is not going down any time soon. I am looking at updating the air intake to a Unit that installs into the air box behind the hood and under the cowl, where air for the heater and A/C enters the Jeep. As I tear it down more, today radiator and all pulleys and parts to be removed, I will post updates and some photos. Hope to out on the trail again by July?

I was well awaiting to hear the situation (to learn what I should stay away from / be aware of). Quite unusual.
Thanks for the info but sorry to see the issue.

Carnage of the year for sure. It'd take a bit to beat that!

I've hydrolocked 3 engines over the years (one of them was my own stupidity), I avoid deep water anytime I can.
Robert B
May 28th, 2013, 07:21 PM
this water was maybe MAYBE 12 inches deep but most of it was less and the no 6 cylinder wall had a big gouge from the rod hitting it so the motor is most likely gone

Robert wanted me to put in a V-8 now, why not just buy 2 rods and bolt them in with a new oil pan and drive it until it blows again LOL, I do not like to break down ever. Looking at a rebuilt ATK 4.7 6 cyl. stroker engine over the stock 4.0 motor. Money will be the biggest factor on what engine ends up in my Jeep. They make a BAJA stroker engine 270 HP for $4300 WOW , but needs cpu , injectors and throttle, mass air changes and a flash on the programming, that's not for me. Looking for a motor with a little more power that's a drop in and go set up. I don't want to miss the whole summer.

Very nice Gene! I replaced my 4.0 with a 4.2 in the YJ a couple years ago. Still crazy this even happened to you man! You gonna do a snorkel set up?

sweet! That's gonna be a fun toy. I recommend running Royal Purple Ice in your coolant, those 4.7 strokers are notorious running a bit hot.

Well the motor is in, but, I have massive intake and exhaust leaks, looks like I got the wrong intake/exhaust gasket set. I now believe I have the correct set and this week end I will pull the entire intake and exhaust system off the engine and reinstall them again. Never a dull moment. Here are a couple pics of things that are happening..

1st pick new motor in, 2nd pic new valve cover, I know it says 4.0 , they do not make a 4.7 one yet, 3rd mock up of the new fresh air intake system, 4th cutting a 3 inch hole through the fire wall , that's always lots of fun !!

Looking good! It really is never a dull moment!:) X2 bummer on the gaskets. That zero (4.0) could turn into a seven with some paint skills :)

Glad to see you are getting it back on the road :woot:. Where did you end up getting the engine?
Geno
July 20th, 2013, 01:11 AM
ATK engines , I bought the stage "1" 4.7 L stroker ( part HP67 as in pic on crate above) 205 HP and 285 TRQ if anybody wanted to look it up . 2 year warranty and unlimited miles. So far the engine is good and there tech line has been excellent. When I get the leaks fixes I will start driving to work to get the break in done. The motor did come with Brass freeze plugs ( that's great ) and pre-painted at no extra charge !! More info to come hope fully Sunday night, Maybe some video of the new motor :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HVUnoaDwi9s&feature=youtu.bewell once past the open header sound of the wrong exhaust gasket that let EVERY exhaust port leak by so it had huge vacuum leaks and sounded like it was open headers........ it runs much smoother and doesn't sound like a tractor

Spectre intake on that is pretty cool. Won't flow as well as some but it does move the intake above water levels most people will ever try to cross.
