Although it boggles peoples minds, this is the path I'm heading down.
I thought I'd share some of the reading I've been doing.

I actually got my adapter from a guy named Jason in Littleton (Was Automotion now is Repost, on Pirate4x4)
http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj66/4runnerFreak/4runner%20Pics/DSC00283.jpg
I'm going to run a L52 in the front, W56 ******* Tranny in the back.
The W56 has '88 Internals, '94 front housing and an '88 G54 rear housing(To mount to my forward shift t-case).

The W56 is still on my workbench in pieces(It had broken shift linkage that I fixed).
One of these days I'll get it all together and put in.

I need to lift the truck first though.

I also need to massage(With a big hammer) my extra gas tank to get it to fit.

Pretty close to the hip.
Here is the placement in MyAnarchy's truck
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e220/myanarchy/truckshifters.jpg?t=1168902877

Mine will be further forward because I am using a L52 for the front tranny(It is ~6" shorter), and a forward shift case.

Huh.... would you still use dual transfer cases too?

4runner freak
April 8th, 2008, 08:04 AM
No! The dual t-case lever would have to be shifted be the person in the back seat(in a 4runner) or bed(in a truck).
Plus I don't think I need 848:1 or even 412:1 gearing.
That would be CRAZY slow.

Ok since you asked about dual t-cases.
Here is a guy that is running 5.0?? in the t-case.
I don't know which trannys he is using, but in my tranny setup, if I ran 4.7s in the t-case, that would give me 315:1 1st/1st/low or 390:1 in Rev/Rev/Low

Jeff

Go to the Toyota FAQ in the Toyota section and you should find the dual tranny stuff. If it isn't there, it is probably posted on pirate4x4 somewhere.

Here is a pic of csudman's rear driveshaft.

Some people have been able to do a direct driveshaft swap(front in the back, back in the front)

Yeah, I know that the entire drivetrain should fit under my single cab. I wasn't all that worried about angles. The CV should help too if I decide to have a shaft made. Will look at all my options along the way.

I browsed all over for Csudmans adapters. Neither Google nor Yahoo found them. I didn't find any link in any of the dual builds either. Appreciate a link!

Myanarchy has a standard cab and swapped the front driveshaft to the rear. He moved the rear axle back an inch. Here is a picture of his rear DS from his build.

No help with the dual link, but I'll post if I can find something.

If you need a CV, go to Colorado Auto Parts and buy a bent Yota shaft, damaged from where they fork lifted it, fo cheap and have Englewood Driveshaft do a new one off of that. The last shaft I did that way cost $15 at CAP and the rebuilt one an even hundred. So for $115, I got a new CV shaft. Check the u joints first for play as they are expensive to have redone.

I just googled 'dual toyota tranmission install' and got a bunch of hits. There are a couple of build threads/links on the pirate 4x4 forum, some of which it sounds like you looked at, but one has a reader's build link for his duals. I didn't have the time to follow it very far and the internet connection in Jefferson sucks, but you might try following the pirate build link. Sounds like he has his up and running with a 186:1 crawl and spent only $60 for an adapter of some kind.. Not bad at all. Mine is 233:1, but I did this with dual cases and it it is way sick. I can get out of the truck, go talk to people and get back in the truck and the truck has gone 10'. Course it takes forever to get over an obstacle, but that is why it is called crawling, I guess...
The difference between 186:1 and 233:1 is about .35mph...maybe?

BTW, what do you have left to do? My friend Bear, 4LoLo, was thinking about doing this to his and did some research on it. You might want to PM him and see what he has to say.

Brody,
I have a very limited amount of time I get to spend in the garage, so at the moment I still need to get the rear tranny put back together(it had a broken shifting fork) and get a set of '89-'95 forward shift t-case shift rails(the t-case I'm putting in is an '88 forward shift(It has the longer shift rails)).
Once I get the rear tranny back together, I'm going to try to bolt them together and see how well I can get them lined up.

I believe that Bear knows I'm working on it.
We just need to talk him into moving from the south booneys to the north booneys. :)

If you have the skills and the time, you could make an adapter for next to nothing. I'm hoping that the adapter I picked up will work. Otherwise, I'll make my own.

Yeah, I have searched all over the net for different things. I have found about 5 different dual tranny sites, all of them apparently using home brew adapters. The adapters are pretty simple, but I figured if they were cheap enough to buy, why bother making one. They are a lot simpler than a dual t-case adapter, so figure they likely won't cost as much.

I think I am going to eventually spend the $ on a dual t-case for the 4Runner. Wanted to tinker with the truck and put in the dual transmissions. Have a couple builder transmissions already, so may as well make the most of them!

Appreciate the info Danny! Will have to look at the links. I am sure that I already have several of them in my favorites.

$275 is kinda steep for a simple piece of steel. I can basically get a dual t-case adapter for the same price. Already have a top shift t-case that I need to put to use. Might just try building my own first. Can't be $275 worth of my time.

I agree with the price, but his adapters are definetly not simple. He has a 0deg and a 10 deg mounting built into it. Another benefit I see to his adapter, is that you bolt pieces to both tranny's before bolting it together to allow for perfect alignment.

I am hoping that the one I have will work well, but it has to be bolted completely to one tranny and then bolted to the other, so I will have very little adjustment.
