I am looking at getting a higher amp output alternator for the ranger and since I am running two batteries mostly for the extra power for when using the winches I have watched the power drop on the gauge. I have seen the new ones ranging from 160-250 amps, I haven't found what the stock output is but was thinking about using the 250 which isn't a bad deal for $170 as compared to the 200 and 225 amp for over $200 each.

Any thoughts +/- on going up to the 250 amp?

usually stock alternators are like 90amp. Been a while since I have researched, but for a long time 130 was the largest you could find without going to a full custom build. I just installed one specifically designed for welding and its only 170 amp.

what you want to look at is not the max output but how much it out puts at idle.......and many times the high output has a time limit on it before the alternator will fry it self my alt is only 130 amp max all day but it puts out a little over 90 at 750 rpm

Are you running a battery isolator, Sean. That'd help with the voltage draw as well. These newer alternators have some pretty radical internals to handle the outputs they run at these days.

Got links? Do any of the ads list the case dimensions?

I've read about sellers playing a shell game with the output numbers, just the way Robert describes.

I know your current set up is either a 95A or a 130A depending on how your truck was ordered. But seeing as you have the 4.0L I'd assume you have the 130.
Also i know Quality Power Auto (http://www.qualitypowerauto.com/catalog.php?item=136&catid=45&ret=catalog.php%3Fcategory%3D45) used to sell some really nice rewind kits, but it seems they have gotten away from that, and gone to just selling some hopped up cases. I did use them to rewind my 1G alternator on my 77 to 160amps over the 80A stock unit.
However there prices far exceed what you posted for what they have listed as "Bolt" on for your rig.

Are you running a battery isolator,

You can use a Ford starter solenoid as youre Isolator. Use youre normal system for runing and youre 2nd Batt for accessory. And a back up Batt for if the 1st system go's dead

No isolator on it currently but have thought about installing one, Sam you got me curious as to how you set one up like that! Thanks everybody for the input on this one

Run youre 1st alt as a normal system (nothing more)
Run youre 2nd batt to all the ad on systems (winch. Inverter, Amps & fridge)
Run youre feed line from the Alt through the soleniod with the feed from the " hot on run"
While the truck is running it charges both Batt's but with key off you have 2 diff systems.
If you run Optimas you have 1200 CCAs per system !!

The new alternator came in Saturday now I just have to install it and will look at either doing the Sam upgrade or an isolator. Ended up 250 amp for $147 shipped.
