View Full Version : Now have a wobble

So yesterday was the first day really driving the jeep after installing the lift and tires. I got up to 35 and started to get a wobble, but at like 40 to 45 it was gone. Then when I went to brake the wobble returned. Any ideas? I've read about death wobble, but I'm not convinced that's what my issue is.

It could be as simple as a wheel being out of balance, have you eliminated that possibility?

That's sounds it to me. Did you relocate or get longer or adjustable track bar ? Another thing you may want to check is all tie rod ends, toe spec. And while you at it check ball joints.

I will check that first

That's is a possibility but an un balanced wheel will usally happen at higher speeds 45 plus. Did you drive it at sppeds before you put a lift on it ? If so did it wobble ? If no then I has to do with something that changed after the list....would be a great idea to chris said cuz that can start and intensifie death wobble..... still look in to the track bar, I have done many 3 inch lift on wranglers the first one thought me a lesson. ... after rechecking all new and old parts, endless tire rotations and balances, and to many death wabble test drives it was a track bar. Depending on your set up you can usally drill a hole about 1 to 1/2 lower then stock kount hole and fix it. But if it was me I'd get a new adjustable track bar.

When you say wobble, you mean steering wheel shimmies back and forth? Did you install a transfer case drop? Do you have adjustable control arms? Did you get the alignment done?

Just a fast google search and came up with this. Proves everything I said by others. But its a great idea to start off by doing a wheel balance like Chris said.

Another fast search .....
As a new Family man I would not risk the easy cheep fix by drilling it out also I would stay away from the drop brakets they are PITA come lose all the freakn time and wear out fast. When I did the lift on my YJ I got this crappy metal brakets that allways lose. But Iits any me drivin in it. Now that my son is getting to the age of being a a hard ride I need to consider an adjustable track bar aswell. But after I swap out the D30 or up grade it.

Death wobble and I became friends/enemies for a period of time. My problems were from wore out shock stabilizer bushing and Control Arm bolts/bushings. After I replaced them, it all went away. I had the same issues that you are referring to and at the same speeds, as well.

so I have installed a transfer case drop, I didn't mess with any of the front suspension other than the lift. its not a serious wobble like death wobble, but it is noticed in the steering wheel, and when braking. my wife could feel it on the passenger side more, than I could. I have done searches on google and bing, and I will check the track bar, as everyone says 90% of the time its the bearing.

Yea I live in parker, well just out side of parker closer to The Pinery off old school house road. I had the wife turn the wheel and the track bar didn't really move. If you have the free time, I am home tonight and all day tomorrow.

I also drove the rig before the lift at high speeds(which takes awhile to get to with this engine) but there was no wobble.

Was that with the stock size, or 33" tires?

It was with stock tires. I am going to go to discount tomorrow and have my tires balanced.

The reason I'm thinking trank bar is not do to movment ( even tho that can casus wobble) it that you did a lift ant that will want to move you axle out to the right...the axle needs to be moved backto the original spot. Was it hard getting the track bar back on when you did the lift

You could use a new steering stabilizer for a bandaid not a premanent fix I forget which JP magazine issue talked about it but they had a really good article on it when I get back to my house ill let you know if you haven't figured it out

I never removed the track bar during installation. I followed their youtube video, and I didn't need to remove it. So...

Any time you install a lift the first thing you should do is get an alignment. Then take it to the tire shop and get the rollers balanced. If it persists then it's time to delve deeper. Ball joints, control arm bushings, trac-bar bushings, trac-bar, tie rod and associated ends, and even loose bolts, a worn steering gear and wobbled out mounting holes all come to mind. Especially with something as old as your's is. All it takes one bushing gone bad or for caster angle to be off by a couple of degrees to give you a huge headache. Have the wife sit in it and turn the wheel from lock to lock and see what moves. Should give you a fair starting point.

Wfter watching the vid I still think the track bar can be a promlem but not THE problem. Like everyine said check all parts , ball joints tie rod ends bearings wheel balance and an alignment. Then go from there

Well I fixed it, no more wobble..... So its a funny story. Me in my great wisdom while installing the new control arms decided to take of the driver side Clevis Caster Assy. Its only a metal bracket that has to bolts that pulls the control arm to set the alignment on the axle. Well I took it off, and left it off. I cleaned my garage last week, and I must have put it in the trash because i spent all day yesterday trying to find it. So today I went to U pull and Pay and pulled it from a jeep. As well some other parts like a cluster with a rpm gauge, which my model doesn't have. I got home and installed both parts, and got on the highway, no wobble. This has been a lesson learned
