Poison Spyder Hood Louver Install for Jeep TJ

My 4-cylinder tends to generate a LOT of heat under the hood. Given this, and with some recent overheating (later determined to be a stuck thermostat), I decided to install Poison Spyder's hood louver. I ordered this from the new Colorado Northridge location, and had it in 3 days with free shipping. Poison Spyder offers a $30 powder coat option; however, they were back-ordered, so I got the raw aluminum version and decided to spray it with bed liner. They make the install easy, offering a template to mark the holes for cutting the hood. The install went smoothly, and I'm happy with the results. I would highly recommend this product.

I like the poison spider stuff. Don't know about you but I was skeared to cut my hood. Of course with mine there was no room for error. Looks great, look forward to seeing it in person.

I have one on my white TJ, and love it. Noticed that you offset the logo color - we did, too, on mine - it's red. Yours looks great!! Are you worried at all about rain/snow? I threw a rug over mine when it was parked during heavy snow.

If you don't mind me asking how much did you get it for ?
Raw aluminum is $130, with a $30 powder coat option. Shipping was free from Northridge, and I had it in 3 days. You can buy directly from Poison Spyder for the same price, but you have to pay shipping, so Northridge was cheaper.

Are you worried at all about rain/snow?
My Jeep is kept in the garage, so I'm not too worried. I did some research on the unit, and although some people were concerned, I got the impression you really don't have to worry about the elements. What I'm more worried about is the finish. The spray-on bedliner I used is not supposed to crack or peel, etc. but twisting on one of the bumpers resulted in a peel that I had to touch up. The directions stated if you're going over anything glossy, use a 180-grit sandpaper, which I did to the entire surface. If it does peel, I plan to take it nearby and have it powder coated.

I'll bet it looks great on your white Jeep, along with your black armor.

Do you have the in-mirror thermometer in your TJ? I ask because I have one and whenever I wheel, the thermometer starts reading ridiculously high because ... it isn't getting enough airflow? The engine and thermostat themselves are running at the same temp they always do.

If you do have the thermometer, did it change your temperature readings to run the hood louver?

No, it came with stainless hex button screws.

Do you have the in-mirror thermometer in your TJ?
No, I do not. I was having some boiling into my overflow on some trails when I would shut the Jeep off. I first noted this on Spring Creek. I later came to realize that my thermostat was stuck; replacing the T-stat has eliminated the boiling issue. I've just always been concerned with the heat build-up under the hood, which is why I went with the louver. I also recently removed my a/c condenser from in front of my aluminum radiator, as I purged the a/c long ago and have converted my compressor to OBA. I think this combination of things should allow the engine bay to breathe a little better.

why this over the cheaper genright kit?

For me, it was the aesthetics and the fact that the GenRight, I believe, doesn't come with a template. Meaning I would get one or more of the GenRight vents crooked and they would eternally sneer at me.
