Went up to Devil's Canyon on Sunday 9/29. Figured since there is a cleanup run scheduled soon, I'd snap pictures of stuff to help plan.

Lots of sign damage. I didn't ride the whole trail, but did see one fell tree hanging over the trail (pic below) and another fell on the trail, shoved to the side (no pic).

Not much mud damage like the pictures from Barbour Forks, but I didn't see the whole trail.

Pine being supported by aspen across trail. I could drive under it no problem, but will likely break in the snow. I think this was on -A, on the way out, just before -A meets with the main trail at the first fork (from the road)

First sign at entrance:

Close to the main gate:

Empty sign box. Looked strange with no signs, but appeared unbroken:

Down no-vehicle sign. Stay right past -A and right at the next fork and you'll see it:

Busted no motor vehicle sign at first split for -A and main trail:

Stay the trail sign - completely broke off 4x4 post. post in foreground, sign back in the trees. I think this was on the main trail, but I only saw it leaving because of the angle. Completely missed it on the way in.

Not sure if I can make the cleanup, but figured that some scouting may be helpful.

That is frustrating. I can completely understand why the FS closes roads. If it wasn't for groups like this, more trails would certainly be closed. Thanks to all that help with maintaining these!

I will send the pics to Brant and ask what if anything we can do about it. I know he has had his hands full. Thanks for the pics.

My opinion, signs that shoot deer piss in return when shot. :thumb:

That is truly frustrating that there is some jerks out there destroying stuff to screw it up for everyone else!

With the government shut down going on are we still going to be able to run the trail to clean it or replace the signs? Is Brant even going to be able to get your e-mail ?

Brad

That's a valid question. I will not know until he responds. I can say neither trail is part of a national park, and should remain open until Dec 15th.

From Brant:
"No you cant do road work, move rocks etc. I am hoping we can do a larger scale road repair project in that area sometime soon. Many times when you do minor repairs you are only treating a symptom and not at the root of the problem. As a result, it sometimes only takes a little rain storm and your work is for nothing...I will most likely be working that Saturday so I can probably do the talk...unless this furlough/shutdown goes longer than we hope..."

That depresses me when I see crap like that.

I think every politician in House and Senate should be fired with no eligibility of re-election...ever. If I don't do my job I don't get a vacation so... I have little tolerance for politicians and the American greed system

In reality it's a small group of Repubs causing this, watch them get their due next election.

Since we built and installed those there shouldn't be any issue putting them back up. Pete and I scrounged material for the destroyed ones so if anyone has material we'd just need dimensions and volunteers to build them and haul to the trail.

Chris, are we allowed to make them out of anything?

i am not able to ask Brant, his email is on auto response during the furlough.

Chris

Nope, they have material lists and dimension that are required. I don't have any of that any more but it looks like they could be gotten from the destroyed versions if someone can get up there and measure. As I recall it's 4x4 supports, 2x4 frame and plywood backing.

watch them get their due next election.

Not with the 2011 redistricting (gerrymandering). That's why they're not worried about consequences for their actions.

Chris, aren't those the signs we installed four years ago?

Chris

Exactly Rob, they lasted 4 years!

I vote we rebuild them to Forest Service spec, then accidentally back them with 2" thick steel plate so people that try to mess with them are in for a surprise!

I was just going to recover what's left and plan to rebuild them for next Junes clean up.

Brad - I can't donate the skill to re-build the signs, but I'd be willing to donate some $$ for materials and you guys can have-at-it. Please let me know if you would accept a donation and use the money for the cause. I'm not even sure I can make the run yet. Lot's going on around here for me... but I'd still like to pitch in if I can.

I was just going to recover what's left and plan to rebuild them for next Junes clean up.From what I remember of past conversations, the "birdhouse" signboards can be made to spec by volunteer groups. I have a couple drawings around here somewhere.

When questioned about trail markers and directional signs, Brant told us they had to be made to specification, and thus, ordered from vendors who could meet spec.

Getting ready for next year, is the right strategy for this trip. :thumb:
