Anyone familiar with the GPS Tracker app on followmee.com.

I downloaded it and installed it to my phone. It updates a database on their site every 30 minutes with my location and I have 7 days of history. Thinking this might be useful if I get stuck somewhere in the back country while wheelin and my wife needs to send out rescue. The only real issue I see is if I don't have phone signal or WiFi it won't update, but at least if would provide a last known location.

Thoughts?

Here's a sample static link to where I'm at while writing this. It's not live. The link I will provide my wife is live.

Something like this is good, as you mentioned, if there's cell coverage.

The SPOT tracker is one that's good to consider when outside of cell range.

Going old school: Let your wife know what route you're planning to take and when you expect to be back home / into cell range*. If you don't return by x time she pulls out the Rescue List and calls a few numbers and we get the ball rolling.

* Heck, you could also post here (before you leave) with those stats and you could leave your wife out of it (or for single folks who don't have close family to rely upon).

I always let my wife know (old school). Thinking this might be useful as last known exact location. Figure it can't hurt.

I'll do some tests while in Moab a week from now to see how often it reports my position while out.

Tom, take a look at MotionX GPS, very nice and has the same feature though I've never used it.

Looks to be iPhone specific. I've a Windows 8 phone.

For one, I never go out alone
For two, I always let folks now where, when and how longI always let people know and sometimes end up further than I expect. But I do go out alone often. Only way to do my nature photography.

Climbed numerous 14ers solo.

The only real issue I see is if...the Mrs. finds I'm within 50 feet of a "jiggly room." :D

Personally, I feel that's a fun toy, but more dangerous than anything as it gives you a false sense of security.

If you want something that REALLY does that, go get one, they're not that pricey. I'll be selling a 1 year old Inreach soon if someone needs a deal on one (I ride for an avy supply company that also sells electronics, so I get them cheap)... but anything that's HOPING for a cell signal for rescue in the mountains is a terrible idea IMO.

Moab IMO has more cell coverage than I typically see in CO, so consider that in your shakedown, that app will work as long as you're in service, and not at all out of it... and more importantly, you won't have any rescue coming until someone sees you've been gone way too long.

Do you have an idea how much you will be asking for it?

Snowbigdeal is out of them right now, so I've got to wait till they get more in (which means they won't have it for me at the sled show this weekend... poop.)

As soon as I've got one on the way I'll let you guys know. Cheapest I've found one used on CL & Ebay is $175, I'll be a bit below that. The new one I think is going to run me $220 or so.

So I checked on this last weekend while in Moab. I was actually quite impressed. It followed me all the way down i70 and while around Moab. That said I'm not certain how timely it was. I mean the location updates were every 1/2 hour, but they may have backed up on my phone and been posted in bursts. I need to do more experimenting.

FYI, I got my new inreach last night (was waiting for some other product to become available to order at the same time) and my other one is now for sale.

I very much prefer to sell stuff like this to people I know or that are int he circle of friends, so I figured I'd start here. $160, about $100 off. latest firmware, no damage, no issues... pretty straightforward.

This is the one that works with smartphones, android & Iphone, but it can be used without them as well.

Interested. Any monthly fees to use it?

btw, for anyone who doesn't want mine... take a serious look into getting ANY of them out there now. NOT A PLB... PLB is almost useless imo, but a spot or inreach.

Being able to get people together to go help someone is HUGE. Having one of these allows that to happen easily & effectively.

Good friend of mine bought my inreach, but give them a serious thought. ESPECIALLY if you wheel alone... don't EVER assume you'll have cell service... and even having cell clearly does NOT help the people coming to get you as much as it should.

I dont wheel alone but more recently have seen the advantages to knowing exactly where u are. I recently got a handheld GPS but can see where an inreach could also be very valuable
