while the ignition is held in the start position truck will run and rev obviously with alot of noise from the starter. let off hte key it dies.

That era of Fords has two ignition circuits; One for starting and one for running.
Does this vehicle have breaker points ignition, or Duraspark?

With starter engaged Id lean towards a ignition switch problem

I think they may have just found the issue, my dads bug had the same issue!

Agreed. Make sure there isn't a blown fuse or something simple to start with.
