The 4.7 liter has some oiling issues. The pick-up screen can and does become clogged and fails to oil the upper end and crank bearing journals, leading to failure of cam bearings, crank bearings, timing chains, etc. Timing chains are a pain to repair/replace. If you run a full synthetic oil and service it regularly, it is a good running engine though. If you do pick it up, make the dealer run a can of BG Quick Clean through it, change the oil to a full synthetic with a can of BG MOA added to it and you should be fine. The Quick Clean cleans the build-up off of the pick-up screen and the MOA fortifies the oil from breaking down.

I don't trust the 4.7 and the quadra trac isn't the best for off-road use... I've got a 2004 with a 4.0 and 242 Select Trac that ill be selling soon.

the search goes on, it wasn't right for me. I'm looking for a 04, v8, under 100k, preferably red.

The WJ is a great platform, aside from the issues already mentioned by Popsgarage you also have to watch for valve seat issues on the 4.7L V8's. As long as they're maintained they're good engines though. The Viscous coupling in the quadra-trac isn't great for full on wheeling but it is awesome on icy roads. A lot of the Quadra-trac WJ's came with limited slips in the axles too.

Good points Richard. They also come with the true crossover steering and bigger brakes that all the XJ guys want to run, which are plus points. Control arms are a rectangular tube design instead of the stamped steel, open backed version the Cherokees, Comanches, older Wrangles and older Grands used. Rear 3 links upper "wishbone" is a bit different but most aftermarket suspension company's have answers for that issue.

That rear wishbone setup works really well actually. More interior room , more power, more comfort, a split rear bench. Yes, I like the WJ a lot and it was a top candidate for replacing my XJ as a DD/family camping/wheeling rig.
